When trying to make the system partition writable (step 2 of process, above) I get the error: mount: Operation not permitted. Am I severely misunderstanding something? I have the Android SDK installed on a Windows 7 machine.

Thanks for any pointers!

The fonts included above don't actually support all the unicode Greek characters (with certain breathing marks it seems).

I tried to copy the Japanese font while my phone was running, and couldn’t copy it because it said “Out of memory” When I booted it into recovery mode, mounted it with

adb shell mount -o rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
and then copied the file, it worked, though. Imho, you cannot copy the font file while the device is running, but instead you have to boot it into recovery mode. Device: HTC Desire with Cyanogen mod.

@Steve: Remata (a flashcard app specifically designed for Koine Greek) uses the font Gentium (http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&item_id=Gentium). I'm not sure if you can simply substitute a font from elsewhere into this process, but the link may help anyway.

As for me, I am not willing to root my new phone. I used Remata for a year & a half, but it's not compatible with my new device. I guess I'll have to keep looking.

ADB wouldn't recognize my device, and installation of android SDK, drivers, etc is a pretty big burden. However I was easily able to copy the font file into place using the following process. The only requirement is a rooted phone (which is also required for the ADB method) and I suspect this method will be easier for many users.

Put the font file onto your phone's SD card (e.g. by plug your phone into computer via USB in mass storage mode, or take the SD card out and use a card reader, or download directly onto your phone)

Install any "root explorer"-type app from the market. I chose "ES File Explorer", which is free. The following instructions are exact for ES Explorer, but all similar apps should work in similar fashion.

Start ES Explorer. Menu button -> Settings -> enable Root Explorer. also enable "Mount File System /, /system writeable" then exit menu.

Use Explorer to browse to SD, find the font file, long press on font file to bring up menu, select "Copy".

Switch from SD card to phone's internal memory. In ES Explorer, this is a button near the upper left corner that switches between SD Card and Home icons.

Browse to /system/fonts/ then Menu button -> Operations -> Paste

You're done. You may wish to undo the "mount / as writeable" option for safety.

As for Method 1, is there a way to see which fonts your deck is using? I've downloaded a deck that I use all the time and I'm not sure which font it is using on my Mac.

Comment by mikemorr.com, Aug 28, 2011

germp, here's the way I know: On the Mac, open the deck in Anki, choose Settings > Deck Properties... > Basic, select a model and click Edit, and click Card Layout. Then look around in the Question and Answer boxes for the various Templates, and also in the various fields in the Fields tab, to see what fonts are being used. (If all your cards use the same model, you can also just click the Card Layout button while reviewing.)

Hi, I'm using Galaxy Ace and trying to read Ancient Greek on AnkiDroid?. I've tried Method 1. As in on my desktop, it said it was using Times New Roman and Arial, so I downloaded the ttf files for them and put them on the sd card. But I'm still able to read the Greek. I don't know if I'm willing to root my phone.... is there something I did wrongly or something else I could do?

Why not add the link to the web market? https://market.android.com/details?id=com.ichi2.anki
