My SD memory is USELESS to.
1 app work writing on SD memory, that one google added "File Commander",
included in Android 4.4.2.
What should they have done with Android 4.4.2?
In System/etc/permissions/platform.xml
This is what they should have been added
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >
<group gid="sdcard_rw" />
<group gid="media_rw" />
</permission>
Until they dont want to change that my Sony Xperia M2 is useless for the 32GB SD memory.
If they change that and make the release of
Android 4.4.3 And tell us that is the fix we waiting for.
And that they have a bad thinking day in previous release.
Then the billions of users might thank them.
I tried to change it but only thing i could was read it.(Root Browser)
Could anyone change it but google?
I'm waiting for that release now.
None should be needing to "Root" hes/shes phone on a product so new.
I only owned my phone for 3 months.
And Update / Rollback should be possible in settings and a "Never update" option to.
/Mike

I used to be able to use my smartphone as a backup for my cameras (using a SD card reader and USB adapter, plus ES3 file manager and an expensive 64GB SD card). Now, thanks to a monstrosity called Android 4.4.2 (Kitkat or some other cutesy name dreamt up by a spotty oik with no life) I can no longer copy anything to MY SD card on MY phone. How is generating a totally dysfunctional operating system upgrade that robs users of the storage that they have paid for "innovative"?

Removing the ability of apps to write to a micro sd card is NOT an improvement. I used to be able to save the pics form the camera directly to the sd card, now it doesn't save them - AT ALL!
In no way do I favor this. Makes having a micro sd card. In the phone useless. What's the point?

I bought a 64Gb micro sd card just a few days before update and now I can't utilize it's capacity with my apps. This being called an enhancement is ridiculous, if my pc said my USB drives and thumb drives can no longer be used they would BE hard pressed to come up with a positive spin on our now crippled system. I loved Android because their software always allowed more customization and personalisation similar to pc and I do not want to void my warranty by rooting, PLEASE GIVE US A COMPROMISE

Really need to fix it. Not your responsibilty to tell me what I can and cannot write on and delete from MY SD card. If you want to control it then you can pay me back the 2 or 3 hundred dollars I'm out for the devices and accessories I paid for since I can't use them the way I would like to.

I just bought a new Samsung Galaxy tab 4 with Android 4.4 on it. Now I can’t write to my external SD card any more. What can be the reason for this stupidity? Why can't I write to my external SD-card. If this was the intention of the designers of Android 4.4, why is it not in the specifications? I would never have bought this tablet computer! Now my tablet is useless. I need to write to the external SD-card. Please Fix this problem as soon as possible, or pay my invested money back, or is there already a bug fix?

I entirely agree with the change. Apps shouldn't be writing to other app’s private directories nor to overwriting, deleting, or corrupting files in shared directories that it may not own.
An app can still write data on the external storage in the app private directory:
http://www.doubleencore.com/2014/03/android-external-storage/
See the section “What Does This Mean at a Higher Level?”.
One could possibly argue that Google should have given users the ability to approve permission for the OS to automatically redirect app writes to that directory for apps that target older API versions. Then users would be able to proceed without requesting an upgrade from the app developer.

I had my sd card longer than this phone and it still has a lot of space but with this addon my SD card has been to become irrelevant and that's annoying on a new level.

I used to start a ftp server on my phone to sync files from my pc to the "extsdcard"... I used to edit pictures or pdf stored in extsdcard... I used to edit text files, HTML or php files from extsdcard... I used to record and or edit sound files stored in extsdcard... it'now impossible to achieve ...
Do I have to and root my device to get extsdcard access back? Doing so giving garantee up (knox bit fuse)?
Please Google give us this write feature back!
4.4 sounds like android end of fun.
Bye.

What the hell... I bought and installed a SD card because I want to write files to it. Thats why they are blank when you get them because every other company in the world understands that people buy and install SD cards to save files to the card. Please fix this stupid mistake and allow users to have the ability to write to SD. This was the biggest advantage Android had over Apple. If you are going to kill it I may as well buy an Ipad.
I do not want this defective OS on my device how do I down grade to an older version that allows me to use my SD card. If thats not possible. Look at it tnis way:
I bought a device rhat was supposed to write to SD. You broke it. Fix it or arrange for the OEM to take back my device and refund my money. I smell one hell of a class action suit here.

Description
There should be a method for a regular user to grant read+write access to their internal and external storage without rooting their device.
Please see
Since mtp is very broken under linux I *was* using SSH server on my phone to access my phones files -- however, due to this regression, my external storage is now unusable.
