Hi
I confirm this defect too on the Nexus One.
it will impact most of corporate customers which use a proxy to connect.
I have tried plenty of Android devices in Europe, it is the only device with such an
issue. All other manufacturer (even HTC on its devices) have fix this issue.

Can confirm - all gapps including browser do not respect the net.gprs.http-proxy

I think that having an option to set/specify a proxy address, proxy port, user, pass
is a real need to make Android mature enough. Doing without it is a real showstopper.
My bet is that this all has to do with the phone providers and them not willing us to
use free WiFi (now available in more and more places), but forcing us to use their
network ($$)...

I doubt it's a carrier conspiracy and rather just a dumb regression from Donut as it
worked just fine there. Legacy applications from Donut will even respect the
net.gprs.http-proxy setting still.

There's a patch which restores proxy support to open-source apps (Browser, etc.) in
Eclair, and this patch got merged into Eclair Cyanogenmod (Droid and N1) a few days
ago and seems to work okay. Google Apps (Gmail, Chat, etc.) still don't use a proxy
and they're closed-source so adding that functionality is up to Google.
HTC Sense phones with 2.1 (Desire, etc.) also appear to have either integrated a
similar patch at some point in their development process or never changed from the
old Android 1.6/Donut proxy settings model, but didn't expose proxy settings in the
UI - by accessing the Proxy Settings activity manually on these devices and setting a
proxy you can get proxy support in the browser (still not in Google apps though).
No word on if/when it'll reach AOSP trunk or an official release though - only Google
know what'll be in each release, and it doesn't look like it's even been submitted
for AOSP code review.
In addition only Google know if this has been fixed internally in the next version of
Android (Froyo) - we'll just have to see as more details and the release of Froyo
occurs.

It was bad enough that stock Android didn't provide a direct way of setting a proxy.
Now, having the 'manual workaround' disabled in 2.0 and 2.1 is just atrocious.
As been mentioned many times(this thread and others), this is a critical feature which
should have been included in 1.0 - especially if Android wants to appeal to the
business users. Let's hope it gets added to Froyo otherwise I might need to install CM
afterall.

I confirm that the -http-proxy support should be fixed in SDK 2.2 (more specifically,
the bug was in the emulator binary and is independent of the platform image you're
running). This solves point 1.
For point 2, the environment variable should be "http_proxy", not "HTTP_PROXY".
I can't comment on point 3, but will close this bug nonetheless since there are ways
to use HTTP proxies reliably now.

Stated ways to use HTTP proxies reliably apply only to emulated network. What about proxy support in platform
(point 3)? Is there a separate ticket for this? Did I miss something? Is this part a Won't Fix?
It seems to me this bug (based on title and points, especially the reference to Eclair rather than the emulator
binary / network emulation) was supposed to refer to the platform as a while, not just the emulator.

Hi , After many trial and error I was able to use the Proxy. Instead of using the name of the Proxy server use the actual IP address, but not on the command line.
Through Settings from the Android Menu i was able to set up the proxy and browse the net.
Details given below
For Android 1.6
Settings-> WirelessControls->MobileNetwroks->AccessPointnames->T-MobileUS->
set the Proxy and the Port here (10.xx.xx.xx and port)
For Android2.2
Settings->Wireless&Networks->MobileNetworks->AccessPointNames->Telkila->
set the Proxy and the Port here (10.xx.xx.xx and port)
Only the Actual IP address works, not the name of the proxy server. Seems that an issue with the DNS.
If you dont know the IP address, then type at the command prompt
C:\>emulator -avd <AVD_NAME> -http-proxy http:<proxy_name>:<PORT_NO> -debug-proxy
Android will resolve the IP Address here as follows
proxy_http_setup: creating http proxy service connecting to: <PROXY_NAME>:<PORT_NO> server name <PROXY_NAME>' resolved to 10.xx.xx.xx.:<PORT-NO>

1. You need to create a Google Maps key from YOUR fingerprint (MD5) - follow the instructions onhttp://code.google.com/android/add-ons/google-apis/mapkey.html
2. You have to create a device / emulator based on Android + Google API, not only Android

I am currently testing APN switchers and transparent proxies but those solutions are not really sustainable for 400 users.

I finally got it to go through the proxy after trying out many different things. It seems that the proxy settings are effective only after rooting the Tab. I am currently waiting for another non-rooted Tab to be sent. After that I will confirm/update.
PS: I have two different Android devices one rooted Milestone v2.1-1 and one non-rooted Galaxy S v2.2. Both are working fine thru the proxy. My guess is that Turkcell left a bug in their custom firmware and the proxy settings require root access.

In the past comment #39 worked for me. I already used the maps API on Android successfully. Today I tried using it under 2.1, 2.2 or 2.3 - nothing worked. I tried using the http proxy settings (in the running configuration and over adb tool and the APN settings within the emulator), generated a new MD5 fingerprint and Maps Key. Under 2.2 the browser works but it does not work for my own applications.
I think there must have been an update on the SDK tools or something that it does not work anymore :( This way I am not able to develop a maps supporting app behind a proxy.

I have an update to my comment #80 which solved my problem:
- I started my app without a proxy behind
- The map loaded like expected.
- When I continue developing behind a proxy it now works (in combination with #39
It seems a maps- supporting APP needs one sucessfully access to the internet to retrieve important data?! I tested this under 2.2 only. Hope this will help someone.

One problem I've run into with the -http-proxy option and the http_proxy environment variable is that it causes the emulator to wrap every TCP connection in a "CONNECT" HTTP proxy request. This happens even for TCP connections that happen to be actually be HTTP connections themselves.
E.g. an app trying to requesthttp://foobar.com:1234/ will become a "CONNECT foobar.com:1234 " proxy request, not "GET http://foobar.com:1234/ " as one might naively expect.
Unfortunately many corporate proxies deny "CONNECT" requests for any destination ports other than 443 (and maybe 80). In this case any connections from within the emulator to any ports other than those two will see a 'connection refused' on the TCP level. (But the proxy might have happily accepted the request to a non-standard port if it were GET/POST/... request instead of CONNECT).
tl/dr: When in doubt run the emulator with -debug-proxy and see what's going on.

Description
Browser at all.
I have tried to specify it using the next 3 case:
1. emulator -http-proxy http://<address>:<port>
2. export HTTP_PROXY=http://<address>:<port> in adb shell
3. Specifying it in APN settings.
It doesn't work at all.
In contrary it successfully works on 1.5 and 1.6.
