Crazy that Google, a search engine company, doesn't have good search in their
corporate email and calendar app. I've got more than 1,000 emails in my inbox and
spread across multiple folders. I've got 1000's of calendar events. Everything has
to be searchable with the very same tools and UI as web search.

disappointed its missing from the 12/11 OTA upgrade on the Droid. This is a

A basic Search is so critical for corporate (and personal) mail. However, even more
useful would be some sort of Filter interface that could do a multi-field
search/limit - e.g. select a date range, a body-text string, a Recipient Contains
filter, etc.

I installed Froyo (Android 2.2) on my phone specifically to get corporate email search and I was dismayed to find
that this is still not fixed. How can you say Froyo has Exchange support if you can't search your email on the

trail, but OH, I'm on Android, I can't find that email without scrolling back through every single bloody email in
my inbox. I get 200 emails a day. Android is not "corporate ready" without corporate (Exchange) email search.

I have been able to search on sender or subject on my Motorola Droid X (2.1) using the default messaging client.
While viewing your Inbox, hold down the menu button and enter your search term. It will filter by your search term for sender and/or subject.
This works for my Exchange, POP3, Text Messaging and Facebook inboxes, but not the Universal inbox.
This does not search the body of e-mails.
I have not tried this on any other phone, so your mileage may vary, but I'm told if you have a Motorola Droid, you can just start typing and it will do the same thing.
I'm unclear if this is a feature of MotoBlur or a feature of stock Android.
Hope this helps someone.

So, I have some news on this. In the last couple of days, I have tested both a Droid 2 (running Android 2.2) and a Sprint Epic 4G (running Android 2.1) and both have corporate email support (Exchange) that DO have email search, although it appears in each case it only searches the sender and subject line. I suspect the carriers have modified the OS to have this feature.
dp...@gmail.com <dp...@gmail.com> #51
@rowetim.
I tried with 2.2 on N1 and does not have this support. I agree that it is these carriers doing the modification themselves. I cannot fathom why a search king would not enable search on corporate email.

Having switched to HTC EVO a few months ago, I can confirm that both 2.1 and 2.2 search local email through the main Google search bar, and within the email app by clicking the hardware search button.
I am using the basic mail app, but it may be HTC's version if the stock app. I know however that it works outside of the HTC Sense home screen i.e. 3rd-party home-replacement apps.
Still no server-side search though.

Guys - only way to check if Google has delivered is to check native builds on Nexus One. The latest 2.2 build still does not support email client search. Let's continue to push them to. All reports above regarding supposed suppport are extensions built or licenses by OEM's. This is not very cool as the experience is inconsistent at best. Google, are you serious about winning market share from Blackberry, WinMo etc or not?!?
bg...@gmail.com <bg...@gmail.com> #54
Agree with Wing.K.Lee and as one of the original commenters, I am still waiting for this feature to find it's way into the base OS code. Sorry I do not have any insight. I have not received replies from my communications to them, and further it does not look like anyone in Google development has officially "reviewed" this issue, according to the board here. It's a real shame that this feature is being implemented by the carriers on a selective basis, but not Google itself. This is why so many folks have turned to using Touchdown, and I have to imagine this will hurt Android adoption with corporate users.

Just returned an android phone two days ago after finding out there was no email search. Guy at the store where I bought it said it was "like your Pre but sooo much better." Not hardly.
Email search is VITAL for business users. I can't be standing with a client scrolling through 3000 emails. It's back to the Pre for me! I am so disappointed. I really wanted to love the android os. 70,000+ apps in the catalog does nothing for me if I can't even use what I thought was a very basic functionality of a smartphone. :( Is there some other website I can check to find out if this functionality is added soon?

Core functionality missing. Not very friendly for corporate email power users. Not only is the GAL search too hard, missing the ability to search emails is critical. You have to be able to search Exchange email....period. You may be selling a bunch, but I guarantee you (Google) that you are not selling more because of this.
Further when people realize this I am sure a decent percentage will leave. Remember that you may not be hearing anything (except this long thread) since people may not need to search their email often. But when they eventually do, and they will, they will be pissed. And on top of that; You're no comment, ignore it attitude, is insulting and will definitely hurt you in the long run.

I recommend buying touchdown. It doesn't make up for the fact that Google's integration is lacking basic features but it is definitely a cut above with some real benefits. It has email search and filtering as well as GAL contact list that you can add contacts to local contacts. You can also get phone numbers from the GAL. One of the main reasons I moved to it is that Android 2.2.1 enforces password every time the screen goes off instead of following the security policy of 3600 second lock that my blackberry had before. With Touchdown, the corporate info (Touchdown DB's) is the only thing that requires a password and only enforces it based on the 3600 second policy. It also has remote wipe and remote kill capabilities. For N1 owners, you can setup custom trackball colors for calendar and email notifications. Not the optimal solution but it works.

I've been an anroid user for over a year. Guess what I just figured out? How to search sender and subject in the native email app!
While in your Inbox, press and HOLD the menu button. The soft keyboard (using Droid X) will open. Start typing what you are looking for and the Inbox will filter. Appears this only works on local emails, not the server.
Btw, Touchdown still does a much better job searching including the server.

@89 - Glad you found it. That fixes half of my problem as usually the email that I am looking for is on my device, but yet i have over 200 emails in less than a week to sift through. Thanks! I swear I tried that not long after I got my DROID2.

The Droid X has a very adequate search capability as far as I'm
concerned. On the Droid X, while in the email app, if you simply hit the
search button, you get the soft keyboard and can search. I think it
works very well and works with Exchange email. I owned an original Droid
since day 1 and on it, there was no way to search so I used Touchdown.
But on the Droid X, I have been using the native email since I switched
to this phone back in October and am very happy with it. I am guessing
that Motorola added that feature, not Google, since there are still so
many complaints about the lack of email search capability in Android. I
prefer the way the Droid X does a global address book lookup to
Touchdown. Performance seems better to me also.

@kenneth & todl: you have found a motorola-developed extension to the native client. All plain vanilla stock androids, like the one that comes on Nexus one and Nexus S, is the one suffering the sore limitations on exchange/activesync support that render them unusable in a corporate environment.
From what I've seen so far, big OEMs like Samsung (Galaxy S), Motorola (Droids) and HTC have extended google's native corporate email client adding the basic missing stuff (searches, filtering (on the galaxy S at least) and so on.
The users that are stuck with this problem are curiously the ones that opted for a pure google/android experience. In my case (nexus s, currently) I have to use touchdown - most people in corporate environments won't be able to convince the IT department to allow them do this; plus I don't like 3rd-party email clients on the device - I'd much rather prefer a truly integrated exchange support for email/calendar and contacts, like the iphone folks have.
Google android team, please get your act together. Thanks.

Evo 4g. No email search? Ridiculous!
Still have my iPhone 3GS. I am REALLY trying to like the Evo... It has a nice camera. Lol.
Can I complain about voicemail in this thread, lol.
PS: I composed this message first on the Android, but weirdness happened in the browser and couldn't scroll my text in the edit window. Being extra annoyed, I picked up trusty 3GS and bamm! Turns out iPhone works better for complaining too... Who would of thunk? Android fanboys, save it. I have Cyanogen. I know what I'm doing.

Just got the Motorola Xoom (very nice) and just figured out that Android Honeycomb version doesn't cater to the worker bees! Such a miniscule simple feature that is required by any business is missing (email search of To/From, Subject or Body)! The stupid thing about it all is that a company that touts being the search experts forgot to put thier expertise in the corporate email interface and then chose to NOT address the issue over the last three years. Although I love the Xoom and the Honeycomb operating system I will likely return it along with the $250 in accessories due to such simple yet stupid oversight that has a huge impact on mobile business efficiencies. What a shame.......now I must go stand in line with the other cattle to get my company and its mobile employees iPads! That sucks!

WOW, google, can we please get this issue resolved? it would be nice to be able to recommend a better alternative than BB. Luckily I discovered this problem while using it on my personal phone and not any corporate devices I recommend.

Bought an eeepad transformer last week to see if i could get things done. Android is just a showcase of what can be done and not what can you do. In the real world its useless and not having a basic search function in the standard email app is the final nail...
Even the homescreen search bar should integrate with every data on the tablet (calendar, email, files). I dont know if anyone has saw any demo of this function in ICS 4.0 but if this doesnt come out android is useless to real world/corporate usage.

Wow! And here I was cussing at so many custom ROM makers such as Cyanogenmod, etc., when all along this Corp email search problem has been and still continues to be a native Android problem! SHAME ON YOU GOOGLE! What an awful demonstration of arrogance and lack of any love for those who would be your biggest adopters! At least own up to it in your marketing blurbs, so people don't waste their time.
The offline Corp Email search feature worked brilliantly in my (HTC) ICS 4.0.3 with Exchange Server 2003, though that email client had other nasty bugs, such as ALWAYS reverting to storing only 3 days of email locally. Barely tolerable, but I found a custom 4.0.4 ROM for my phone at XDA that fixed that. And now with JellyBean - all versions inc 4.3 - offline Corp email search is just COMPLETELY GONE! What a royal stinking disaster.
Sadly, this is the end of my love relationship with Android, as good and sleek as the platform has become in all other aspects with JellyBean. Back to the store goes my brand new Nexus 7 just purchased, and my next phone too will likely be an iPhone. Worse, every work colleague who I had bragged to so much about JB is receiving a link to this forum, and being told to desperately stay away from Android - primarily because it appears that Google doesn't seem to care very much about Corporate users!
