I would love this feature.

We're also experiencing (probably) similar issue, that is for sure related to combination of R8D + GCC4.7 + gnustl + armeabi-v7a. Unfortunately, can not (yet) confirm that it's related to <iostreams> or mentioned ctor, but for sure the issue is somewhere out there.

Same problem here. It is not affecting me on android 2.3+, only android 2.2.

Just got first Android 2 days ago (Sony Xperia Z Ultra), and this already bothers the hell out of me. It seems like it would be a no brainer to include this as an option.
dh...@gmail.com <dh...@gmail.com> #8
Please, fix that!
n0...@gmail.com <n0...@gmail.com> #9
Yes,please,add the option for the volume rocker to always just adjust media volume.
I always want my ringer on vibrate, but my desired media volume depends on my surroundings. It is a hassle to often have to adjust media volume (down) from within the system settings before starting an app.

Using the volume rocker to control media volume always is an option in CyanogenMod 11 and it is awesome! Too bad CM11 doesn't work properly on my device. It seems like it would be easy enough for someone that knows what they are doing to make a process that does this. Just need to keep this enabled: setVolumeControlStream(AudioManager.STREAM_MUSIC)
n0...@gmail.com <n0...@gmail.com> #13
Yes, I hope Google will fix that Volume problems, I don't wanna control Ringtone notification volume with volume buttons.
The best way is go to control panel make a vink option called ''control volume with Button's''
also vink option to ''separate ringtone & notification volume''
the ringtone volume is mostly different then the notification volume because it has to do with audio clip. each audio file has own spectrum or noise levels called db some ringtones are louder, notification sounds are mostly quietly!
every time I hate to change audio clip sound level in windows.

I have the exact same problem. Good thing there is already an enhancement request for it.
I advertently change my ringer volume when I accidently hit the vol button and this happens a lot.
I, like most people, don't need to change my ringtone volume on the fly, but I frequently need to change the media volume.
Please make this customizable.
Thanks

I really want this function
xc...@gmail.com <xc...@gmail.com> #18
I've spent a couple of hours trying to find a way around this. I keep turning up the ringer volume just before a video starts, then have to wait the few seconds until the ringer volume dialogue goes away before I can turn the volume up on the video/other media. Android is great, no issues so far, just this one thing.
pv...@gmail.com <pv...@gmail.com> #19
I completely agree with this. Ringer volume is generally either on at a set level, on vibrate, or silent. Different media applications and sources have different levels of audio output. As well different environments mean you need to adjust your output for what would be considered acceptable ( ie work, home, alone, etc). Nice to have the option to manipulate the level before it comes blaring out of the phone.

I am actually using Gravitybox right now, and it has settings to a) Let me change the media volume by default and b) Bring back the old button to expand the volume controls. This is also a feature in CM as someone mentioned earlier. It bothers me how this is such a simple fix, yet no one has implemented a change.
km...@gmail.com <km...@gmail.com> #21
Before starting any music or video I would like to change the volume down to watch in a silent environment like in office. Usually I will play the media and turn the volume down. This feature would be of much help.

I agree, having an option to make the volume buttons always adjust media volume would be ideal. My phone is always on silent with notification light only unless someone is calling but not many people call any more and if they do it's usually important. I find myself constantly lowering my ringtone volume before playing a video to still have the video come blaring out of my phone. I'm not going to remember to lower my volume at the end of every video or sound clip i listen to. Please add this feature.

Switching from iOS, and this is the most annoying thing in the universe. Because of this and a couple of other bugs, I'm seriously thinking about going back.
bu...@ucw.cz <bu...@ucw.cz> #25
I switched to CyanogenMod which has the toggle to enable media only control via volume buttons and I'm a much happier camper. I can finally live with my phone.
do...@gmail.com <do...@gmail.com> #26
Pity customers like myself who she'll big bucks for flagship products like note 3 still have to hack the damn thing with cyanogen mod to get a basic feature. It's common sense....u rarely change ringtone volume on the fly....u constantly need to change media volume. A no brainer and yet Samsung doesn't get it. I may blaspheme n go iPhone cus of this alone! It's PAINFULLY ANNOYING!

This is one of the most annoying things about android. Media volume usually needs to be changed before playing.

I'm using samsung galaxy s4. I badly need this feature.I did not even come to know if I reduce phone ringing sound or something else....
It will be great if atleast phone ringign sound can be removed from this button.

The only time I changed the ringer volume on purpose was right after receiving my SGS5. After that I either have it on or silent. I would rather have the volume buttons control media volume on default than having to change the ringer volume just to get the volume control pop up on my screen to then tap the options icon and change the media volume by sliding it and then waiting ages for it to disappear. This is as ridiculous as the previous sentence is long. Please give us the option to change it.....
pi...@gmail.com <pi...@gmail.com> #32
The volume popup should show all of the available volumes (like on the nexus 7).

I need this feature so badly! It's incredible annoying when you accidentally change the phone ringer volume when you use the volume buttons. Who needs to change the ringer volume anyway?!
km...@gmail.com <km...@gmail.com> #34
This is a good reason to move to Cyanogenmod

xc...@gmail.com <xc...@gmail.com> #37
Yes, PLEASE, make the buttons more flexible by NOT making them change the current streams volume, but a dedicated one or all.
Would be nice to have a few steps (just like Profiles)
Step 1: everything zero
Step 2: vibrate on notification and ringer
Step 3: notification to 3, ringer volume to 5, media volume to 1
Step 4: notification to 5, ringer volume to 6, media volume to 3
etc.
These steps should be controllable with the volume buttons.

We're still waiting for this issue. I'm on a Nexus 7 2013, and the hard volume buttons control the "ringer". It's not even a phone! Either separate the volumes or let us SYNC all types of volume to the volume rocker!

Description
The last message in LogCat is:
D/dalvikvm(): Trying to load lib /data/data/com.test/lib/libTestLib.so 0x46276110
i.e. it does not get past the loading stage; there is no 'Added shared lib' message.
- Devices running Android 2.3 and above do not seem to be affected.
- Also, libraries that do not include <iostream> don't seem to be affected either.
- The problem does not occur when using the GCC 4.6 toolchain.
Overall, this seems like a critical issue which currently renders the GCC 4.7 toolchain unusable for compiling code that is supposed to be used on devices with Android 2.2.
The following is a minimal example to reproduce the issue:
-------------------------------------------------------
TestActivity.java:
------------------
package com.test;
import android.app.Activity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.util.Log;
public class TestActivity extends Activity {
static {
System.loadLibrary("TestLib");
}
@Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
Log.d("TestActivity", "Hello, world!");
}
}
TestLib.cpp:
------------
#include <iostream>
Android.mk:
-----------
LOCAL_PATH := $(call my-dir)
include $(CLEAR_VARS)
LOCAL_MODULE := TestLib
LOCAL_SRC_FILES := TestLib.cpp
include $(BUILD_SHARED_LIBRARY)
Application.mk:
---------------
APP_ABI := armeabi-v7a
APP_STL := gnustl_static # or _shared, doesn't matter
NDK_TOOLCHAIN_VERSION=4.7 # if this is commented out, everything works
-------------------------------------------------------
Digging deeper into the <iostream> source code, I found out that the issue can be traced back to the following code snippet:
--------
namespace std
{
struct ios_base // from <bits/ios_base.h>
{
struct Init
{
Init();
};
};
static ios_base::Init __ioinit;
}
--------
- By replacing the contents of TestLib.cpp with only the above code snippet, the library will fail to load.
- If, additionally, a dummy implementation of std::ios_base::Init::Init() is provided, the library will load successfully.
std::ios_base::Init::Init() {}
- Renaming the namespace from 'std' to another name, e.g. 'xstd', will naturally cause the linker to complain:
error: undefined reference to 'xstd::ios_base::Init::Init()'
This leads me to believe that there is an issue with the implementation of std::ios_base::Init::Init() in the GCC 4.7 sources (as opposed to the GCC 4.6 sources). After checking out the NDK toolchain sources, I could not detect any differences between the different versions of ios_init.cc, where the Init() constructor is defined. That implies that there is an issue with a function used inside the constructor, and this is where I stopped investigating further.
