This is very inconvenient from my point of view too. Can't believe it as the competitors, like Apple with iOS already support this kind of feature.
mr...@gmail.com <mr...@gmail.com> #7
My organisation has always used transparent proxy. So Techs bringing in an Android were OK, as they just needed the WiFi key.
Now though the organisation is rolling out a much wider "bring your own" mobile device scheme, and naturally when its everyone it needs to track who created what traffic for security purposes and individual user authentication is required. Two options - transparent proxy with redirect to a login page will only work for browsers. The second option of a non-transparent proxy with credentials work great for iOS, but Android doesn't have full system proxy support so for those users its still browser only functionality and we have to disappoint them.
Google is handing Apple a mobile win here in some corporate environments - Google please sort this out.

Google should come up with some application or update to jelly bean in order to resolve the issue of proxy WiFi servers. It ruins the experience we can get from nexus 7 which is very unpleasant on our sides. I can only run browsers and notion else that annoy a lot. I don't want to root my device or such thing. This issue should be addressed or iOS 6 and windows 8 can start an aggressive campaign against android because everyone wants connectivity for all apps every time and anywhere.

By using this we can set global proxy, Only i couldn't access google talk, even google play was working fine.

This is quite critical for any use in corporate or education environment.
Not being able to do this makes android look like its wearing clown shoes compared to an iPad.
"Root It" is not a suitable answer. Should a schools IT Department have to root phones/tablets on behalf of staff/students, just to get a proxy authentication working? when an iPad can handle it by default?

I use a Nexus 7 in a corperate environment and it works great for exchange mail on the corperate WLAN. Chrome works well too for browsing but apps that need access to the web are a no go. It would be great if Google could enable global proxy support and help unlock the enterprise potential of the platform. I'm sure asus/samsung/etc... would like this too so they can sell more devices to enterprise, government and education clients.

IMHO, not having the global proxy setting ability (which is usable by web-browsers and other applications, including the app-installation application like google-play) makes the entire android operating system LAME and PARTLY USABLE.
This PERSISTING DRAWBACK also reflects the COLLECTIVE STUPIDITY of the geeky Google engineers, receiving fat pay-checks at the end of the month. How could this not still enter into their high-valued brains?

Yep another win for iOS. I bought a fairly nice LG Optimus L9 and can not connect through the company wi-fi even when manually setting the proxy... my iPad works just fine when I set the proxies.
I tried Android with an open mind, but this is just ANOTHER EXAMPLE where the Apple way of doing things "just works". Even if they fixed this proxy problem, I have no idea whether my phone would be eligible for the update or when I would get it. I don't have the same problems with iOS.

This has to be the worst feature on android so far. The inability to set a global, system-wide proxy with authentication is a serious issue.

Me: Intuitively, the iPhone is the only smartphone worth paying the huge monthly bills for. They're so expensive though... I can't afford that....
Me: I don't want huge bills, I want a nice slick phone on my current pay-as-you-go SIM.
Me: Android phones must be pretty nice, there are plenty of people using them. I will just buy an unlocked phone with a nice big screen and I'll have the best of both worlds. I will be able to call when I'm out and about, and use the WiFi at work where there is no cellular support for my carrier.
Reality: LOL loser, no proxy support, no WiFi at work, useless lump of Android in my coat pocket 10 hours a day.
iPhone users at work: huh?... your brand new phone doesn't just hook up to the WiFi?.. oh.. I didn't even know they made them like that. Mine works... walking away, texting with a client....

UPDATE: It's alive! On a proxy!
I recently got my Tab2 10.1 (Android 4.1.1, no special software installed and not rooted) working fully on an unauthenticated proxy network running through a wifi router set up as an access point. All apps (including Play and even streaming video with MLB At Bat) now work flawlessly on a proxy network.
Process: setup proxy config for my wifi connection (HTTP proxy address and port), tried to connect with it set to dynamic IP: no action. Changed the IP setting to static, and boom goes the dynamite, the tablet came alive! It's alive! mwahahah!
I am not entirely sure why it now works, and I suspect that it may have something to do with some recent changes made on the network. However, I am definitely connecting through a proxy network that normally requires a HTTP proxy address and port to function, and all apps (to my knowledge) are working.

I believe there were network changes, but I cannot verify this as I am not in direct contact with the ISP. Further, my knowledge of networks are limited, so I apologize that I cannot provide more detail (feel free specific questions). From my end, the only major change I noticed on the network was that I can now set the system settings on my Windows 7 laptop to "Automatically detect settings" instead of entering the HTTP proxy address and port. When I do a ipconfig, it seems that I am still on a virtualbox-based proxy network. That's all I know about the network config.
I will post a more detailed outline of the process later (tablet is not with me at the moment).

I am using both an Android tablet and phone. I have had partial success with connecting through my universities authenticated proxy. These are the steps that I followed:
1) Turn off all android proxy settings
2) Install Firefox browser with "Network Preferences Add-On"
3) Set up proxy settings in the "Network Preferences Add-On" in Firefox.
What works? All apps connect through the WiFi and operate without issue (except for Google Play Store), all web browsing through Firefox works fine.
With Google Play store, you can browse through all the apps and see what is available, you can flag apps for download/installation. However, no downloading will actually occur (it will tell you it is downloading, but no progress is achieved). This goes for updates too, it says its downloading the update, but no progress.
Otherwise, all is fine.

Please add this basic feature. Proxy support for all applications or services that require internet should be supported from the basic Android platform without requiring to Root the device.
even if you ROOT the device, this will violate corporate MDM policies and the device becomes unusable on Corporate networks. So actually there is no way out which is a sad state of affairs for the leading mobile platform.

Funny how the android lovers call people 'fanbois' when they talk about preferring Apple iOS products. Seems like one would have to be much more of a fanboi to support an OS that doesn't work with proxy servers. All I know for sure is that iOS out of the box works fine with the proxies at work, and Android doesn't. Fact.

thank you for your unnecessary comment.

And your comment about my comment is somehow more necessary than the original?... ironic.
I didn't know there was a necessity component to posting here. Additionally, I was unaware that you are the Necessity Police. Thank you for taking the time to inform me.
Seems as though there are about 80 'unnecessary' comments here, if the response is taken into account. I guess it's obvious that proxy server support is a "medium-priority enhancement" as opposed to basic functionality for an internet-connected device used in a corporate setting.
Is that necessary, or un?.....

sorry if I rubbed it the wrong way. I did not intend to do so.
The iOS did not have global proxy support until 4.2.1 either and up to that
point it was medium priority as well. As more and more people adapted the
iPads and iPhones for business, it was necessary to implement the proxy for
corporate environment. Business environment and students are big market for
portable devices and both are proxy filtered.(most of the time) therefore,
with no doubt, this will be corrected for Android and it's just matter of
time and peoples voices.

This is just unacceptable! I for one, constantly advocate the Android way. I tell everyone to get Android, as opposed to Apple, since we enjoy the freedom that comes along with it. But I can't show them how great android is at work, as we have a proxy server and I can't download, run any of my apps at work! And Google decided to make the Nexus 10 wifi only - so I am totally in the dark here! This is ridiculous!

I have the same situation.

My manager and I along with some other colleagues have android tablet Galaxy Note 10.1 . Connected to corperate lan we can not even send email, let alone using any other aplications other than browser. This is realy a big issue and a deal breaker. If I have known this issue existed before buying an Android tablet, I might have considered other possibilities.
Please try solving this issue soon.

I just bought this tablet for school usage, I cant download PDFs on my school network or access the playstore. Hopfeully with firefox beta or some other flash plugin i will be able to access the school's moodle portle too. Without these fixes I have effectively just bought myself a glorified toy, not a study tool. Google, please fix...

It seems that some google applications like gtalk, google maps always use a fixed IP to communicate with their server, even with wifi proxy set.

hey guys,
it's been a while since i was dealing with this issue, but it's still a big problem!
so as some of you may know, a new version of android (probably 4.3) is going to be released in a few weeks at google io...
if we want universal proxy support for all apps in this version, then we have to get much more attention to this issue!
i'm going to send some emails to google employees, i know, and other people that have more influence on stuff like this, than we do, and i hope you guys will help me with this.
we have to take charge of this, otherwise we won't probably get this feature in another few months/years!
so if you know anybody important or someone that will take part in google io 2013, make sure to tell them about this problem here, so we can be sure, google knows about this...

Hi big G. I've the same problem of everybody have to connect on a network at work or at school.
We're a huge quantity of people, please take care of this problem.
I've buyed google nexus 4 and 10 and told to my relatives to buy the same. I don't want to change for APPLE, but time is an important variable for me... I'll wait some month, than I'll change into an APPLE fanboi.

I wonder how many customers Android is loosing this way? I work with about
100 other people and every single one of us have an iOS device and most
would enjoy android. I definitely do but I have to answer honestly and
tell them that it does not connect to web which instantly turns them off...

Hi guys, sorry this is a lil' bit out of topic, but I'm also having trouble getting Skype for iPad work through proxy.
Does anyone know a SandroProxy alternative for iOS?
I did set up HTTP proxy in wifi settings but all VoIP apps like Skype, Google Hangout or even FaceTime have connection problems, the others apps work fine.

Hi there,
I just recently bought a Samsung Galaxy note 10.1 , and after noticing that I am not able to use the Varsity's internet, aside from browsing, I started researching for a solution and came across this site. I do not want to root my device , so does anyone perhaps know if future software updates will include a Global proxy settings, so we do not need to root.
Please let me know if you guys have any news on this or know any apps that allows global proxy settings without rooting.
Thanks Guys.
