I have exactly the same problem. I also uses a Netgear Router. I Own 2 samsung devices, Galaxy Nexus and the Galaxy S Vibrant, also a Kindle Fire. The Samsung Mobile devices happens to have the same disconnecting problems, and the Kindle Fire does not. My roommate's Iphone4s does not have this problem. Sorry for my bad English, but Hopefully this will get fixed asap! Thanks all!

Got my Nexus7 yesterday and am having the same problem. Nexus7 connects to my Netgear WGT624v2 ok but, as soon as Nexus7 attempts to send/recieve, the router stops all traffic - not just for the Nexus7 but for all attached devices. When the Nexus7 is disconnected from the router. the router starts working again (sometimes I have to reboot it). My HTC Desire works with my Netgear router just fine so, while the Netgear264v2 is a little old, I don't see why it shouldn't work with the Nexus7.
If anyone can provide guidance, I'd be grateful.

Caught the Galaxy Nexus in act today.
I'm sitting about 5 feet away from the router at work. I've walked into work about 5 minutes ago and just turned my phone on. As you can see the Wifi is greyed out and including the network signal (Note the drop in signal).
I turned off my Wifi.. and then turned off my Mobile Data.. then turned on my Wifi and turned on my Mobile Data.. And a few grey to blue to grey to blue tries later. It all came back on.
As you can see the second image, the Wifi is on and so the is mobile network and look at those bars jumped up almost from no where.
I have a feeling this is something to do with Android's sleep "power-saving" routines. Somehow the device doesn't really stay connected with its in sleep mode. I'll try to dig through the source code over the weekend to see if I can understand something.

I cannot use my Nexus 7 any more. It hardly stays connected for 5 seconds. It has been constantly disconnecting, and I'm not exaggerating, 5 seconds and all the Wifi signals disappear. Then grey ones come back.. Then they change to blue.. You browse a page (if you are quick enough).. and it goes black again... Argghhhhhhhh

This problem has been driving me crazy since the last 6 months. this happens only on my galaxy nexus and my Netgear N600 WNDR3400 router. never happened with a D-Link,Cisco or Belkin router at my friends' places. Doesnt happen with my Asus transformer TF101, SGS captivate, HTC HD2, 4 laptops or my lg smart TV. Only the Gnex.
Happens in front of my eyes, while the screen is on, screen is off, browsing, practically while doing anything or even while not doing anything. Happens sometimes, for no reason at all, and after it starts happening, doesnt stop. Wifi profile reset, phone reboot, radio off n on, nothing helps. Even flashing a different radio, kernel, rom, nothing helps. Happened with all versions of ICS n JB. Trust me, I thought my phone had become unusable when this happened. Only thing that will stop this is if I go into my router settings and select a different channel and reboot. Then stays cool for 2 weeks, a month, couple of months maybe, then happens again. And just if you are wondering, there is absolutely no wifi congestion where I live. Just my network, and a few times one more network pops up. No clue what the deal here. Attaching screenshot of when it happened tonight. It drained from about 40% battery to 0 overnight.

This problem is pre-Jelly Bean. When I got Galaxy Nexus, it came with Android 4.0.2 and still had the issue. My HTC Desire HD runnig Gingerbread had exactly same issue. The only time I got it to work was when I rooted my HTC Desire HD and ran a custom ROM.

I'm experiencing the same issue with a galaxy nexus running 4.1.1. Buffalo routers in work are fine but with my Cisco epc3925 cable wifi router at home wifi dies a few times a night. Annoying thing is that iphone, iPad, dell EPs laptop, iMac all work perfectly.
Once I turn wifi off and on it works again for a while.
I have fixed the channel to an unused one, 4, and I've tried forgetting the network and reconnecting several times with no joy.

Just my 2 cents... I have had this problem with my galaxy nexus, my asus tf101 n my n7 with my netgear n600 wndr3400 intermittently over the last 8 months or so...I recently decide to flash dd-wrt on it n c wat happens. So I did, n the problem stayed. Then 1 day, something struck me, I have always used WPA2 n WEP encryptions, n thats where this problem happens. So I just switched to WPA-AES. N for the last 2 weeks, no issues. Its still 2 early to comment, but I think this router has issues with WPA2 security, which would be root cause.
Strangely though, my Galaxy S captivate never had any issue with it.

I've been experiencing this problem and can confirm that this is a bug with WPA2 support on the Nexus 7. I have an N600 router which offers multiple networks with different security schemes.
I tested by pinging the Nexus 7 from a laptop.
With WPA2 networks (WPA2-PSK [AES]) the pings stopped completely while the screen was off. If I reactivated the screen within a few seconds, the pings would return with very long times.

Please people keep "starring" the issue so it gets traction for someone to have a look at from Google.

Same problem happens with my Nexus One and my Belkin N300 router. I'm sure this is not a Jelly Beans or Netgear issue. I don't see this problem with my college wifi network. On my home network the wifi disconnects abruptly every couple of minutes even if the phone is not sleeping and the reconnects back. Sometimes my phone doesn't connect at all and gets stuck on Obtaining IP address and then my wifi network is labeled as disabled on the wifi networks screen. If that happens I have to reboot my phone or my router to get my phone to connect again.

I recently upgraded my stock VZW Gnex to Jelly Bean and my wifi signal bars have been abruptly going from blue to gray after a period of time. The routers I have seen this with is the Netgear R6300. I have one at work and one at home. The problem exists at both location. Both locations use WPA/WPA2-PSK encryption. I am away this weekend and the place I'm staying at has a Netgear WNDR3400 router. I have been here for 24 hours and I have not gone from blue to gray. This router uses WEP encrytion. Perhaps that is a fix, but certainly not an ideal one. I am going to check out comment 21 when I get home to see if that works.

My Gnex connects well when on, but drops when on sleep. But intrestingly it works brilliantly at work even on the one bar of WiFi and on sleep. It is something to do with Power settings and particular kind of router. PLEASE NOTE:- The WiFi bars on Gnex are very misleading. Even when Grey and one bar it shatters the IPhone in pure website loading speed.Try it yourself. Keep both phones side by side and load the same website. @GOOGLE: just give us an update to keep WiFi at full strength on Sleep..Its Easy

for netgear WNDR3800 disable WMM and all QoS settings for that wireless network. QoS was the key piece for me. turning off just WMM didn't fix. turning both WMM and QoS fixed it for me. rather have a functional router than QoS that breaks when have tablet on. don't have router here but that can provide specifics if needed.

Got home the next day and it connects to my router (ATT stock) but in about 15 seconds the wireless just shuts off. It doesn't turn grey like the screenshots above, it just simply turns off. I can go back in to settings - wireless and turn it back on, but back in my WPA password, it connects and within 15-30 seconds it just shuts off. It will do this plugged in or just on battery. Hello all. I did a fix and it seems to have stabilized the intermittent wifi drop.
First, I have a Netgear router, and my fix involved turning off the WMM feature on the router. I found that on a post on XDA and it worked for one person there and seems to have worked for me too.
If you don't know how to get to your router, search for this address 192.168.1.1 which is the default IP address I used to access my router login page. Once in, I was able to go and turn off WMM in the application settings.
Haven't had a drop since.
Hope this works for other people out there too! Good luck! (I know this is just for those with problems at home, but it's still better than having this issue in the comfort of your own house!)

Unchecking WMM worked for me too. I did this awhile ago, and did not have the wifi icon turning grey. I have 2 identical Netgear R6300 routers, one at home and one at my office. I had the same problem in both environments. When I unchecked WMM the problem resolved. To test further, I re-enabled WMM in both environments, and the the problem reoccurred in both locations. Now that I have disabled WMM again, the problem has stopped.

I disabled QoS and WMM... and although it was more stable at first - it lasted about a week and a half. I reset and switched channels - lasted another week or so... then back to same problem. Not sure this is a stable fix for all - or only maybe certain netgear systems?
ro...@gmail.com <ro...@gmail.com> #56
I have just purchased the Netgear 3400 dual band router, I use it in AP mode and when connected to by a Galaxy SII I get repeatable connection issues on one or other of the bands. Currently the SII sees the 5GHz signal and you can enter the WPA2 passphrase and it will just sit there and refuse to even attempt to connect.
Yet if I then attempt to connect using the 2.4GHz signal, set up in the same way with WPA2, that will connect OK. I have just tried a Nexus 7 I've bought as a Christmas present and it also will not connect but this time on 2.4GHz, same issue as the SII on 5GHz, can enter passphrase but will not connect.
My Samsung Galaxy SIII connects to both bands just fine and my wife's Desire on CM7 connects fine to both routers on 2.4GHz.
It seems to be if you make a major change to the Netgear router config or re-blow the latest firmware, the devices with the issues can be coerced into connecting but it is a temporary fix and reoccurs.
For the moment I have gone back to running the TP-Link AP I started with for 2.4GHz and using the Netgear for 5GHz only for the SIII and currently everything can now connect but I can't use the Netgear on both bands as I can't maintain a working relationship with each device.
Some sort of weird incompatibility is occurring between some Android devices and Netgear routers or at least my Netgear N600 WNDR3400 v2 router. I'm thinking the Netgear is probably going to be returned.

One more user with the same issue on a Galaxy Nexus.
I have been using one of those Buffalo 54g routers for 6 years,I installed dd-wrt and all my devices were doing great until last week that I bought a Netgear N router; all the disconnections started upon this,I returned the wireless N router and bought another Buffalo N router -guess what!! I came across the same issue with my Galaxy Nexus,so no luck with either one.
I am going to try to switch to wireless G and see what happens. The Cisco wireless G routers at the office work great no issues, but for some reason wireless N is not working properly here.

I found the problem - Turn off DLNA auto-IP under the network settings where you select the SSID, then go into advanced mode and you should find it somewhere there. If you want to assign an IP address based on the device MAC address in your router, that will work as well.
The problem isn't the device, it's the standard.
Here's my little write up.... Only took 3 weeks to find the problem :)

Bug fix:
1. Fix the issue that when android devices in sleep mode might cause router connection issue.
Let's hope for the best, just downloaded the update.

Never had a problem with any of my smartphones with my Linksys or Belkin G routers... just upgraded to a Netgear N router and all my computers, the Wii, etc... all stay connected but my Galaxy S II and Nexus 1 disconnect CONSTANTLY! I've tried every suggestion I found on the internet (Qos settings, static ips, changing from WPA2 to WEP, even changed the mode on my phone from auto to only 5ghz and 2.4ghz (both failed within minutes)). My Netgear is a N150 (WPN824N). If this is such a widespread problem... why is nobody doing anything about it?!?! Can it really be THAT hard of a fix?!

I was experiencing the Wi-Fi dropping issue with my new Nexus 7 on a NetGear WNDR3400 with WPA2 security. That router allows a guest signal to be broadcast as well as the main one. I have this issue with my Samsung Galaxy S3 (pre and post Jelly Bean upgrade), as well as an HP TouchPad that has Android installed on it, a Nest thermostat, and a Dish Network VIP 922 set top box. On my Galaxy S3, occasionally the wireless signal will drop and it will reconnect a couple seconds later. It will behave like this until I unplug and plug back in my Netgear WNDR3400 v1 router. On my TouchPad, occasionally the wireless signal icon will turn all gray - sometimes I'll still have connectivity, sometimes I won't. On my Nest, sometimes I won't be able to connect to it with the app (on Android or iPhone devices) until I physically go to the Nest and play around with it for a minute or two (I'm assuming it's "waking up" and reestablishing a connection at this point). There was even a firmware update for the WNDR3400 that was supposed to fix this (it used to be worse). Finally, the VIP 922's network connection will sometimes stop working and require me to re-test the connection to get it to connect again.
I'm glad I'm not the only one having these issues. It's most annoying on my phone. I find sometimes that switching from the 2.4GHz SSID to the 5GHz can cause it to stay connected longer, however.

Netgear support claims it is a MS powersaving setting that is putting the router to sleep. I noticed that my whole network ( cell & laptops ) goes down when the main computer goes into powersaving sleep mode. Once I tap the enter button, everything is fine. It seems that the router needs the main device to be continually working. I'm still trying to figure out the Win 7 settings to stop this.

Having similar issues, but if disabling WMM didn't work, you might want to try this.
Disabled IPv6 on the Netgear R6300 router, now two nexus primes and a nexus 7 are working fine.
Also reset the router to factory defaults, and re-applied the latest firmware first; toggling IPv6 seems to break it every time even with WMM off. Facebook wouldn't update, youtube and google voice had a serious lag.
The firmware on the R6300 sucks, I can't wait until they nail down DD-WRT for it. To be fair, only the androids were having issues; the PC's are fairly smooth on it.

I have a Motorola Droid 3 and disabling the WMM fixed this problem for me! My new router is a Netgear N600 WNDR3700v4.
ma...@gmail.com <ma...@gmail.com> #90
Here is how I solved my issue : I simply disconnected another router that is in the same range ( same level , a neighbor's router ) , the router signal was very week that I can't read it untill I go near to my home door. the signal of the neighbor router is not available inside my home. however disconnecting that router solved the problem !!!
Symptoms:
1) internet works for few seconds this stops , I saw few bars , either blue or gray
, I tried all suggested solutions here , like go to plan mode then disable it ..etc , nothing changed that behavior.
2) I installed the "ping" app and did a continues ping to the router gateway IP, pinging works ONLY after you immediately enable wifi , then it fails in few seconds , sometimes it send 5 packets then fail to continue ,sometimes it lasts for a minute sending 20 packets then fails. you know it fails when it stops pinging.if you tried to start pining it will not work. when it fails it will keep failing and internet will NEVER work , until you disable then enable WIFI again.
3) when the pinging fails , I have to DISABLE then ENABLE WiFi to make it work again.
4) even though pinging the default gateway fails after few seconds, if you tried to ping any other device IP in the same network ( connected to the same router ) it will ping normally and works fine. also you can ping the cell phone ( Nexus 4 in my case ) IP from any connected laptop. I can't explain that , if the cell phone wifi can send packets to another device THROUGH the router , how it can NOT ping the router it self ! ex:
router : 192.168.1.1
Nexus 4 : 192.168.1.101
Laptop : 192.168.1.102
while the pining fails from nexus to router, the pinging works from Nexus 4 to Laptop and vice-versa
5) the router in the next door that i disconnected , was not appearing in the "available networks" , this what does NOT make sense to me , I am not sure how the other router affected my signal . may be the Nexus 4 doesn't show very week router signals. however this very week signal was causing me a headache for a whole week.
6) Changing security settings of the router is not related to this issue, however I changed my security now to the simplest form "WPA-PSK" , I already tried this settings before I disconnected the other router and it didn't solve the problem , but I will leave it as it is for now, I will not change it back to WPA2 until I verify that I will NOT face any more wifi issues for next week. sorry I want to feel happy for a while :)
So at the end , I am not sure why the other router was causing the problem , it could be related to multiple share the same CHANNEL . not sure. I will not change anything now , will leave it running for another week.
NOTE: the problem does't happen with Samsung S3 and even Samsung Ace , so it seems that google pure drivers are not as good as drivers written by samsung , do you agree ?

Thanks for this thread.
This now happens most of the time when I attempt to connect my Galaxy Nexus with our (old) 2Wire 2701HG-B router. No other devices in the household seem to knock the router off-line (causing the router to do a hard reset: whereby it powers off, before powering itself back on).
There are apparently no network problems when using other wireless devices, such as wireless laptop computers or other Android phones.
I'm not having this problem with the same make/model router (2Wire 2701HG-B router) at my other residence.
I'm using WPA2-PSK authentication at both locations.
My Galaxy Nexus has never had a SIM card in it. I leave it in airplane mode and toggle WiFi on and off manually. I do not leave WiFi finder 'on' when I drive.
If the router has just crashed, I toggle my WiFi off on the Galaxy Nexus, and then allow the router to reset itself, whereby it soon becomes usable to other users. But the moment I toggle my WiFi radio back on, it kills everybody's connection, and then the router goes through its reset routine again.
I've been troubleshooting this problem for a couple of months now. I've tried changing the Wireless Channel and the DSL Line Selection. When I attempted to boost the Power Setting, the router crashed hard and would not come back online. At that time, I had been tinkering with the router settings from my smartphone, but immediately following the hard crash I had to get out the laptop, connect via ethernet cable, and lower the power back to the default setting of '4' before it worked again.
The problem of the Galaxy Nexus regularly causing the router to crash (reset) remains.

It appears I've found the solution for my 2Wire router resetting spontaneously a dozen times a day, but only with my Galaxy Nexus.
I uninstalled my WRCB Radar app. It's developed by WSI Corporation and repackaged for dozens of local TV stations, so you may have the same app under a different name.
What caught my eye one day was a message in my notification shade, saying that it was trying to load weather layers. I recognized it as the same kind of message I'd get when actually running the app, which I was not at that time. I thought it strange that the app would be loading this data without the app having been launched.
Could've been a glitch in the installation, but I haven't been curious enough to reinstall yet. I've been problem free for about a week now.

You're all wrong. Disabling wmm causes the router to reboot, which temporarily fixes the issue... but it will happen again. Likewise if you manually set/change the WiFi channel the router will also reboot and symptoms will disappear.
I had wmm turned off since day 1 owning it and the problem still happening.

My netgear router is dated, but we have not had any problems connecting it to any of our other remote devices, just my LG smartphone. It is already default on WPA2-PSK, no other WPA options are available. The WEP same issue as others, it never assigned an IP address.
So, the fix for me was to go into advanced wireless settings on the smartphone, select a static IP address and then I entered the IP address (from my netgear settings page)on my phone, there are now no issues. I did not alter any other settings in there.

This is obviously a DHCP issue. NetGear router sends DHCP NACK on request to use an unleased IP. I did some debugging a couple of years ago, and its clearly NetGear not following the DHCP standard. That is why static leases and static IP works.

I too am having this issue with my Nexus 5 and Netgear WNDR 2700. It also seems to occur with an Aruba managed public access points. It is extremely frustrating. I got one of the first run production Nexus 5 devices, and never had a single issue. I had to get a replacement due to a physical defect on the device and every single subsequent device exhibits this issue. I have tried everything and even tried upgrading to Android L Preview hoping maybe they addressed this in the upcoming release.... nope still a big fail. I have friends who have an "original" nexus 5 that does not have the issue, but everyone who purchased one more recently sees the same issue, so clearly something changed with the hardware and software is not keeping up.

I changed from dhcp to static ip and have not had a disconnect in 12 hours or so. I have a Cisco epc 3925 and did not have to change any router settings.

We are using a DGL-4500. We kept getting messages about the Firmware not being up to date through Avast on my Desktop. It was up to date. So I uninstalled Avast.
Then I got a new phone a ZTE Android running Android 4.1.1 and this is happening with it still just as the very first person described.
For Security setup, it is WPA/WPA2 PSK Signal is excellent with 65Mbps on the Router for the ZTE.
I do not have this problem on my Samsung Tab 4 running Android 5.1.1. Signal Very Strong 72Mbps with WPA/WPA2 PSK Security Setup. and it is hooked on the same Network at home. I have Permissions set up on all devices on the Router. Each given their own IP.

Mu husband just said that the Wi-Fi Signal is only as good as the Device's Capability of picking it up. That it is not the Router as He is not having the issues that we are.
But I still want to get this :D :

Coming back to this thread as i am still having problems with both a number of android devices and a macbook pro. Changing to static IP's only worked for a day or so, then the problem returned. I've changed my Wifi security setting from WPA/WPA2 to WPA2 only and the encryption from TKIP + AES to AES only. Lets see how this works out.

Still having problems with Netgear N600 and Samsung A3 2016. Wifi dropping after waking up from sleep.
Description
Wifi keeps disconnecting randomly, sometimes every 30 seconds or so. I thought may be something was with my old Netgear router (updated firmware) so I went ahead and bought Netgear N600. But kept getting random disconnects.
- What happened:
After months of agony, I have observed a few things:
1. Usually the mobile network single goes from blue to gray as well when Wifi dies. I can still see the grey wifi strength but no data packets are received.
2. It mostly happens when you wake up device from sleep. When you press the power button to wake the device up, you can tell the wifi is not connected as the wifi bars are greyed out (I have the "Keep Wifi on during sleep" as "Always").
3. Just to screw with my head more, sometimes it has happened to me while randomly browsing around. One minute it is working, the next minute it just dies. You can see the wifi bar going from blue to grey (sometimes with the network signal as well). And you have to wait for it to turn blue again. Then you can finally reload the page you were trying to look at. Sometimes you have to do this every time you click a link!
4. On the Nexus 7, it worked fine for first few days but since yesterday, it has been disconnecting constantly. I have static IPs for both my Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7. Both the devices are running 4.1.1
The reason I think it is just Netgear routers is because I have a Netgear router at work, its a really old one and we have been using it for good 5-6 years (latest firmware). None of the Android phones can stay connected to it (no, I'm not making this up, we have a Xperia Arc, Samsung SII and my Galaxy Nexus). We just keep getting disconnected. One of the employees has an iPhone 3GS that works just fine (Grrr!).
In desperation, I even tried running as WEP but still kept getting disconnects.
I must add, I do have an iPhone at home as well, which never disconnects (and by never, I mean never ever!). When the Nexus 7 disconnect started happening, I had no choice but to come here and try to resolve this (I'm sure I had tears in my eyes!).
I am technically aware so I'll be more than glad to run tests in trying to resolve it. I have a feeling this is something exclusive to Netgear routers.
