Chrome for Android does have both restore features.

You cannot install Google Toolbar to Chrome but it really needs that add on. And you
are expecting this feature for Android :D
When I heard about Google Chrome, I thought I would see my Google bookmarks on my
bookmarks bar by default. But I expected too much. Yes I can import them in but they
are not synchronised as much as I know. (Google Docs for keeping Bookmarks :S)
There is an application(Bookmark Importer) that imports bookmarks to the browser but I
have not checked it out yet.

Just adding to the list of customers of Android that would love to have google
bookmarks sychronise with my Android Browser. Can't understand why it wasn't in the

arrive, can you make sure the user is presented with an option to synchronise the
Android Browser bookmarks, as I now have a bunch on the phone that are not in google

Thanks.

Storing the bookmarks from the Android default browser in the Google Bookmarks space
by default would also bring instant, massive visability to Google Bookmarks; right
now, it's easy to never know about GB especially if you work routinely on a computer
where the Google Toolbar is blocked. Better still, if there was an OS-level hook
to "bookmarking services" which was defaulted to GB, any browser written for Android
would be syncing with GB by default. This along with the "tagging service" that
everyone talks about would raise the power and usefulness of the GBs exponentially.

Chrome doesn't use Google Bookmarks to stay synchronised. It uses Google Documents. Google Bookmarks is an
older and separate product that is being phased out.
I agree that keeping the Android bookmarks synchronised in some way would be helpful, especially since Google
makes it so easy to migrate between Android handsets in so many other ways. I don't think it would be helpful
for every single bookmark to be listed on my handset though, as that would probably slow things down too
much. How about keeping the Android bookmarks separate, but secretly using the whole collection for input
recognition and suggestions?

Wouldn't take mean that the bookmarks have to be synced from the cloud every time you
open the browser? That will take more time to load and if you don't have internet access

Something has to be stored locally for it to work right. It would just be nice if it was

What actual evidence are you seeing that Google Bookmarks is being "phased out"?
What I'm seeing is that it remains a mainstream Google offering, integrated not only
with Web History, but also with Google Maps, whereas Google Docs is just used to sync
Chrome and no other browsers (including Android).

Good call. I didn't realise Maps used Bookmarks for storage. I guess it's more alive
than I first thought.
There used to be a Google plugin for an early version of Firefox, and it used
Bookmarks:
http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/browsersync/
The Firefox plugin was abandoned and Chrome started synchronising via Docs. These
events in sequence made me think Docs was the future and Bookmarks was the past. Bad
assumption. :)
Anyhow, I don't care how they store our bookmarks, as long as Android Browser works
the same or better. I suggested the Chrome+Docs way only because Chrome users would
appreciate the integration, and non-Chrome users would never notice.

Google Bookmarks is very much alive. It was even recently integrated with Google
Search back in the fall. To me, that's the strongest possible indication that Google
is still fully behind Bookmarks. They've got such a great opportunity here that
they're not even bothering to use, while people still download extensions like XMarks
for bookmark syncing.

I think this really illustrates an issue with two different teams at Google managing
bookmarks in the cloud without any collaboration between the two. This has nothing to
do, particularly, with Android.
Everyone was waiting for Google Chrome to synchronize bookmarks using Google
Bookmarks. Instead, it did so via Google Docs. There are technical advantages to the
method they used. Less data is used and the same technology which drives Google Talk
is used for instantaneous syncing. Rather than polling the server every few minutes
and pulling down the full list of bookmarks online... if I change one bookmark, it
sends an instant message to Google's servers about this single change. Google's
servers, in turn, sends an instant message to any other instance of Chrome I have
open elsewhere about the change. It's all a push, rather than a pull. And it's only
about what has changed, rather than the whole list.
So, the core technology behind the way Google Chrome manages and synchronized
bookmarks is superior to Google Bookmarks. Also, since Chrome stores the bookmarks in
Google Docs, you have a single location to search for documents, files, and
bookmarks.
The problem is, where Google Bookmarks seemed to be dead... suddenly, wham, it is
brought back to life. Stars start showing up in search results. The Google Bookmarks
manager is updated. Lists can be created and shared.
All of this is fantastic... except, there is now some confusion. Bookmarks I save in
IE or Firefox (using the Google Toolbar) are synchronized in Google Bookmarks and
cannot be found in Google Docs or Chrome. Bookmarks I save in Chrome are synchronized
in Google Docs and cannot be found in Google Bookmarks or Google Toolbar in another
browser. There's this huge wall in the middle of an otherwise peaceful garden.
Sure, there are a few Google Chrome Extensions which can poll Google Bookmarks, pull
down the list of bookmarks, then add these or synchronize Google Bookmarks with
Chrome. However, doing so, the technical advantage (of speed, reduced bandwidth, and
push versus pull) is now lost in Chrome. Also, this method is unable to synchronize
bookmark changes from Chrome back to Google Bookmarks.
Also, Google Bookmarks is organized by labels (and now further, by lists)... whereas
Google Chrome bookmarks are organized by a hierarchical folder structure.
I love labels in that you can put a single bookmark into several different "folders"
and a change to one is a change to all. However, the disadvantage is that you can't
easily create a multi-level hierarchy to organize your bookmarks. So, Google Chrome's
method is ideal. However, now it makes the two incompatible in ways. "Lists" in
Google Bookmarks just complicates things further.
Ultimately, what Google needs to do is synchronize (completely on their own servers
in the cloud) data between Google Bookmarks and Google Docs. Then, Chrome can
continue to use its same push technology to synchronize any bookmark changes in
Google Docs with each Chrome instance. I'd be OK with an additional entry called
"Google Bookmarks" appearing in the Bookmarks Bar in Chrome (next to "Other
bookmarks"). Then, Chrome (and Google Docs) will ultimately have three spots for
bookmarks. The Bookmarks Bar, the "Other bookmarks" folder, and the "Google
Bookmarks" section. Perhaps "Lists" can show up as folders... and labels can show up
as folders, too.
Until this type of synchronization takes place, there is continually a confusing wall
right in the middle of bookmarks garden... between Chrome/Google Docs... and Google

Unfortunately, that means you'll also miss actual updates, but you'll miss those by
removing your star anyway. The only real downside is that you won't get e-mails for
*any* starred items, but seeing as how this issue is fairly universal across Google

Mozilla is having the feature soon with "Home" an upcoming iPhone app (https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/mobile/home/ ).
I love the Chrome to phone extension in Chrome 4.x to Android 2.2, but what about phone to chrome, or even, bookmark sync...
This would make browsing experiences a little more ubiquitous for users.

The idea of a separate tag is the best option, really.
Im wondering: If "all apps are born equal" and Im starting on Android development, and since Motorola doesnt seem to care about updating my milestone, I'll have to step up and do it myself for my phone (and of course, release the source).

Just star the issue to show that you support this, don't post it in a comment because all it does is spamming people who starred the issue.
jr...@gmail.com <jr...@gmail.com> #84
Regarding comment #86 and being "spammed" by starred issues... I know this is the wrong place to ask this, but I've seen the issue come up time and time again, and I can't find the right place to raise the issue for the life of me (there's no google code meta recommendations forum as far as I can tell), so I'll just ask here.
People constantly complain about being spammed when they star an issue and want email updates, but are evidently not willing to just filter and sift themselves, so then they un-star the issue which reduces the weight of it for a reason totally unrelated to the issue itself. Can the email preferences for Google Code be expanded to perhaps do the following:
- Only get email updates on issues when the update is from an @google.com address.
- Only get email updates on issues when the update is from a "trusted" Google Coder (where "trusted" would need to be defined somehow... perhaps allow people to star other commenters and only get updates from them?)
- Only get email updates on issues when the update affects the status of the issue.
Or some combination of above, tending toward less updates as default. If it was manageable per issue, that'd be even better.
That'd allow people to keep an issue starred without getting spammed to the point of unstarring it out of frustration. Telling people "just filter the email updates" evidently doesn't work as I've seen that said many times with no significant results.
Sorry again for the unrelated comment... I truly could not find a good place to post this. If any moderator is able to move this comment (or point me) to an appropriate place for it, feel free.
Thanks.

Actually, I was new to all of this, so now I see my evildoing and I apologize. About comment #87 , I would suggest adding on the first line of the explanation of the issue:
"If you want to vote on this, just star. No need for comment unless you have something useful to add".
This is probably the issue for most people here. I came here thinking that the star was only visible to me and that, to make it really count, add some comment.
Eventually, this will become a protocol as more people understand this. In fact, now it looks pretty obvious, but the star metaphor specially good on conveying the idea of "I see this as important too and everybody should know". So far, on google things, this is a much more private thing (to my understanding).

Um, if you read the initial report:
"Reported by pjulien, Jun 07, 2009
Everything in android is synchronized from the cloud with the exception of
bookmarks. Having Google bookmarks integration in chrome and the android
browser would provide relief here.
Alternatively, at least be able to read back in the html file that the
bookmark manager in chrome writes."
It is quite clearly about Google bookmark AND chrome.

@dillonstars: The OP should have posted the request to have Google Bookmarks integration to Chrome on a Chrome-specific feature/bug request page, not here. As this board is specific to tracking bugs in Android, the only relevant portion of the original bug report is the inability to sync Google Bookmarks to Android or the Android browser.
Please request changes to Chrome elsewhere.

Wow this is bad. We are fighting over what the issue is and doing nothing to resolve anything.
di...@gmail.com <di...@gmail.com> #95
My interpretation of the feature request is that people want bookmarks synced between their desktop Chrome browser and their android browser, and that they were suggesting that Google bookmarks was the way to do it.
te...@gmail.com <te...@gmail.com> #96
Disappointing that fewer than 1200 have starred this issue. Better to star it and say nothing than to post without starring IMO.
ap...@gmail.com <ap...@gmail.com> #97
The reason I starred this, is I think that GMarks (Google Bookmarks) should be integrated amongst all google products. That is... Chrome (which I don't use, but why not), and especially Android phones (which use a modified chrome browser anyway).
pa...@gmail.com <pa...@gmail.com> #98
Re: My interpretation is this: there are two different online bookmarks provided by Google: Google Bookmarks and the Chrome bookmark sync. One may question why these aren't the same, but as long as they aren't, the android browser obviously should be able to sync both sets of bookmarks.
ia...@gmail.com <ia...@gmail.com> #99
It may be worth repeating that what the OP asked for is not technically accurate.
Chrome does not currently sync with Google Bookmarks, it syncs with a special area of Google Docs reserved specifically for keeping multiple installs of Chrome in sync.
Those "search stars" on Google do not sync with Chrome bookmarks, nor Google Docs, but with Google Bookmarks.
The Google Toolbar on non-Chrome browsers does not sync with Google Docs, but with Google Bookmarks.
So, this raises the question... which should Android sync with? Should Android sync with:
A) The same bookmarks Chrome stores in Google Docs?
B) The same Google Bookmarks that are tied to the search stars and Google Toolbar installs on non-Chrome browsers?
C) An entirely different set of bookmarks, also managed in another area of Google Docs or something similar?
Regardless of how this Android-specific request gets resolved, there is still some bookmark confusion going on at Google. Will Google Bookmarks and Chrome Bookmarks (stored in Google Docs) ever converge? If so, wherever this convergence takes place is where Android should sync to. If there is no plan to merge these two, the options of A, B, and C still remain.
My suggestion is that, in some way or another, Android should sync with BOTH A *and* B (and not create further confusion with an option C).

No, DO NOT implement any type of password sync as jesus.g.serrano requested.
In order to have good security, websites store passwords in a hashed way to prevent any possible way of retrieving or reverse-engineering a user's password.
If Google were to implement password sync, even if it was optional, would require Google to store all of your passwords in a retrievable way. This means in either plain text or some sort of encryption where the key is readily available.
Do you really want that?

The website doesn't store the password. The browser does.
IE is really bad at securing it from what I've seen; I'm not sure how Firefox fares, Chrome uses encryption in the SQLLite store.
The passwords in the end, must use reversible encryption -- the website doesn't accept an encrypted password (though that would be an interesting standard to implement). All the browsers just decrypt the password at the last minute, and fills it into the text-field on the relevant website.

ja...@gmail.com <ja...@gmail.com> #120
Yes, this is something I just assumed would work when I came over from a BlackBerry. I guess in a perfect world, where everyone has 3G/4G service all the time with 100% up-time, it would be great to have everything in the cloud. But until we arrive in that Utopian society (read- never), please consider that most phones have areas where they do not get enough coverage to access the cloud (mall, airplane, office building, etc.) and so rely on local apps which sync (real-time, automated sync) their data.

It's annoying the crap out of me right now that there's no way to get your bookmarks from CHROME on Android. There are apps that sync your Google bookmarks, but apparently, Chrome is not using Google Bookmarks to sync bookmarks between computers. When I go to google.com/bookmarks it's empty. Even though I have bookmark syncing enabled.
Every stupid, redundant function gets added, but things that really are essential don't? I hate being somewhere, trying to look something up, thinking "I added that as a bookmark. Oh, right, that was on my computer". As good as Android's browser is, I still prefer doing my browsing on my laptop when I'm at home, so when I bookmark something I want it on my phone without taking any extra steps.

I use Last Pass to manage my passwords, and now that they have an app for Dolphin HD this would work great if i did not have to type in the urls of all the sites I go to on a daily basis. The Google Bookmark sync from a computer using Chrome to another is awesome, but by it not syncing on your phone defeats the purpose of Last Pass developing this to work with Dolphin. If it can take Last Pass a few weeks to make there app work with Dolphin why cant Google make the bookmarks sync?? Hell it is already half done!!!
Come on Google, this is really the only thing of real use missing from Android right now...Just think of pissing on Job's turtleneck while you make this work, that should be inspiration enough!

Its crazy how bad Google is managing bookmarks, They have 3 different ways of storing Bookmarks and none of them talk to each other
1. I have bookmarks stored atbookmarks.google.com (which I can access via google toolbar on any other browser or from the web which I always liked but using chrome I have to use chrome sync)
2. So I have bookmarks synced by Google Chrome( that I can only access in chrome installations, no other browsers ect like I could withbookmarks.google.com )
3. And I have my Google Android Bookmarks
If Chrome Sync'd withbookmarks.google.com and Android that would be ideal all my bookmarks in Chrome and Android and if I were in Firefox I could still easily access (add and remove) via google toolbar.

I've released a free version of ChromeMarks to the market that allows basic access to your Chrome bookmarks on your android device.
NOTE there is are no android browser that can accept a folder-in-folder hierarchy (which includes Dolphin as it only accepts top level folders), so the bookmarks are only accessible inside the app. But at least it fixes this gap.

In a world where more and more devices access the internet, bookmark synchronization to a cloud identity like Google's gmail accounts is becomming an absolute necesity. Someone will get this right and I would rather it be Google, since I keep all other information there. The Android browser and chrome is the obvious starting point, but Google should aim at supporting all browsers everywhere, like the sadly failed Xmarks project/company.
br...@gmail.com <br...@gmail.com> #192
Agree, I kinda don't understand how this one's got so overlooked for so long. At least make the Android browser create a "Mobile bookmarks" folder in Chrome where it places its own bookmarks, and similarly, a "From Chrome" or some such in the phone to put the ones from the desktop in. Please? o.o

It should be noted that there's some confusion here. Most people seem to be looking for Chrome -> Android bookmark syncing, but the issue was opened in reference to Google Bookmarks, which is an entirely different service. Why they aren't merged is beyond me.
I do want support for Chrome bookmarks on the Android browser. It's a bit silly that we have Chrome to Phone, but completely lack a bookmark sync.

th...@gmail.com <th...@gmail.com> #211
The issue here is based on the suggestion that: "Google Bookmarks should be integrated with the browser"
Several comments interprete the terms used in this issue to have different meanings. And that seems to be created by the confused way Google uses the term "Bookmarks". Goggle's browser Chrome has a Bookmark Manager that exclusively syncs Chrome Bookmarks with anyone logged into a particular user's google account and using Chrome. So if the issue refers to Chrome as "the browser", that issue was resolved before any of the comments were entered. Then all that is needed is for app programmers for androids to obtain Goggle's permission and blessing to develop a Chrome browser . . . at least for the very popularly advertised "Google phones" such as Verizon's HTC Incredible.
Instead, Google continues to directly or indirectly sponsor other browsers for it's Google Phones such as the HTC resident browser, Dolphin for Android and Firefox. All of these substitues for Chrome have at least temporarily allowed some work-around solutions such as the previous Firefox Sync (now XMarks - with a Premium pricetag). It could be that Google is trying to go away from their free app policy and empower special paid services - so that it will eventually buy out XMarks or some other paid service . . . thereby avoiding the direct implication that it no longer provides free applications for important services.
Of course, Google could just buy out Firefox or Dolphin (or maybe it already has and the public doesn't know it yet.) With that in mind:
If Firefox can sync their bookmarks on a "Google Phone" like the HTC Incredible
but there is not even a Chrome browser app for Google phones available,
then Google apparently wants to defer to Firefox as the bookmarks syncing browser for it's "Google phones."
Apparently, Google has a very different (possibly less practical) vision for "Bookmark Manager" on Chrome, than what most of the commentator before us are requesting.
Chrome to Phone is a mystery. Maybe it's suppose to be a kind of introduction to the possibility that a real Chrome browser can be operated on an Android phone. You get the "privilege" of pretending that you almost have that while browsing on your desktop or laptop, while iphones and ipads don't seem to be pretending that their browsers sync bookmarks with Apple browser Safari. But then again, you have to have a mobile me account with Apple to sync Safari bookmarks . . . yet another paid (not free) service.
Maybe Windows Phones have the browser bookmark syncing with Internet Explorer? Maybe we need to take a look.

I have developed PhoneMarks to fix this problem. I found it annoying that everything, except my bookmarks, was being synchronised off the phone - hence I developed my little application.
Simply, PhoneMarks is a Chrome Extension and Android Application that synchronises a folder within Chrome to your GoogleDocs area and then the Android application pulls this file back down to your Android device. It even supports folders, by separating them with a '-' in your Android browser (The browsers bookmarks are just a list of entries).
The current release is Chrome to Phone only and will replace ALL bookmarks on your phone, this allows management of your bookmarks from Chrome. I am currently in final testing of a Pro version which will allow Phone to Chrome synchronisation too.
Currently both the extension and application are manual synchronisation (you have to click on the icons to synchronise), but this is the next feature to be added.
Finally I have had reports that Samsung devices don't like how I am adding bookmarks to the browser - the bookmarks are added to the 'last used' menu and not to the bookmark list. I currently do not have access to a Samsung handset to check why this happens.
Hope you like the application and solves this problem.
Search for PhoneMarks in the Android Market and the Chrome Webstore or visitwww.littleapp.co.uk for more information.

One approach that works but is not perfect is to:
1) Go tohttps://www.google.com/bookmarks/l -- that will load your Google Bookmarks.
2) Bookmark this. You can then add that bookmark to Home if you want it to be easily accessible from the home screen.
I have a G1 that is memory-limited. I use this basic approach to replace several apps that simply take up memory and provide little added benefit. For instance, Google Reader is available as an app but simply doing the above gets me about 90% of the features without using any additional memory (except for the bookmark).

Please let us use the chrome bookmark sync to sync android bookmarks. It can't be that hard, and it seems like something that should have been done from the start

This issue really demonstrates the stove pipe mentality at Google. For a company that proclaims one should live life in the cloud, the lack of a chrome browser sync for the Android platform is just mind boggling. I currently sync all bookmarks, history, passwords etc to the Google cloud and works perfectly across computers but doesn't do a damn thing for me on my Android phone. This point was really driven home last night when I wanted to access a site on my phone, realized I'd forgotten my password and had to go dig out my laptop at 2am for a 2 minute task waking up my wife in the process. It irritated me to no end. I love Google Products. I just wish you'd stop making new shit and tie them all together. You'd be really unstoppable if you did.

Android 3.0 and Android 4.0 allow you to sync your bookmarks with your Google account (and therefore with Chrome.)

dc...@gmail.com <dc...@gmail.com> #303
@dfils: Actually, Chrome CAN sync to Google Bookmarks. Under Options, go to Personal Stuff > Sync. Click the button Customize, and when you sync your Gmail account, make sure Bookmarks is checked. I have my Google Bookmarks on Chrome both at work and at home (no rhyme intended!), as long as I'm logged in to my Gmail account. But yeah, the final step now is to get it on Android Browser automatically. Actually, they should just have a mobile version of Chrome on all future Android devices, as the default browser. Consistency across the board, I say.
ma...@gmail.com <ma...@gmail.com> #304
The problem is it doesn't. While I can sync Chrome with Dashboard it does
not sync my bookmarks with the browser on Android. I'm sorry you missed

On Ice Cream Sandwich, and while there is bookmarks syncing, it syncs with chrome's bookmarks, which are not part of Google Bookmarks. That means I cannot easily share bookmarks. Why have two separate bookmark systems?
Not only that but I have a TON of bookmarks on my computers (bookmark database for chrome is about 2mb), If I have Android sync, it wants to snag all my chrome bookmarks, which eats battery life, and uses more data. it would be nice if I could have separate profiles or something, so everything isn't lumped together.
I use xmarks on my computers because they offer things that google just doesn't. I can sync across multiple browsers, I can set up multiple profiles, I can view all the bookmarks through a webpage if I am on a computer where I can't install plugins or browsers (like if I am at work), android support, etc. It just boggles my mind that Google has Google Bookmarks (which gives you support for viewing bookmarks through a webpage), but doesn't have any of their browsers actually use it, and the browser bookmark syncing is completely separate (and not viewable online).

I have a Android 4.1.1 but I'm confused in what way can use Google Bookmarks...
I find some bookmarks in my stock browser (linked to my google account) but I can't sync that with the Google bookmarks....why?
On the Android side this bookmarks are referrer to Google Chrome Bookmarks? (syncronized on the past and I can't manage that with a webpage)
I think need to have one bookmarks service or clarify on the Android side what kind of bookmarks can I sync....
Thx!

Google Bookmarks (https://www.google.com/bookmarks/ ) is entirely a different product to the bookmark functionality inside Chrome. In Google Bookmarks, the bookmarks are organized using "Labels" but not folders, which is like Gmail. Furthermore, a note could be attached to the bookmark, so that the user can say something about the content of the link.
In fact, the bookmark functionality inside Firefox is like Google Bookmarks. Every bookmark has a "tags" list, which is equivalent to "labels" in Gmail, and each bookmark has a "keyword" field, which allows the user the say something about the link (or it just copies from the HTML header if that field exists, but the user can modify it anyway).

Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in this history of mankind.
Mankind -- that word should have new meaning for all of us today.
We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore.
We will be united in our common interests.
Perhaps its fate that today is the 4th of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom, not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution -- but from annihilation.
We're fighting for our right to live, to exist.
And should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice:
"We will not go quietly into the night!
We will not vanish without a fight!
We're going to live on!
