Even I faced the issue
To reproduce, use android studio 2.2.2 or any latest you have
Creat a master/detail activity using
compileSdkVersion 25
buildToolsVersion "25.0.0"

And open the master layout design view. you can see the above mentioned problem

I can compile and start project on emulator or mobile phone, but layout preview in Android Studio doesn't work

I observed the same as comment #12

We have passed this defect on to the development team and will update this issue with more information as it becomes available.

Confirmed this as well. Preview is broken in Android Studio after updating to 25.0.0 support library. Note that the app itself is running OK. Just the preview is broken. Same "Exception raised during rendering: Unable to locate mode 0" message. Although so far this Support update has broken less things than all other updates. :)

Experiencing the same issue with a FrameLayout within a CoordinatorLayout. Temporarily downgraded to SDK 24.

This is a very important issue regarding new support library

Amazing how this can even be released. I mean, it breaks Android Studio previews in *template projects* that come shipped with Android Studio! A full 50% of all my screen views no longer render (big recycler view fan) in preview, making it impossible to design in the IDE - what kind of testing do the support libraries go through if something this obvious is missed...? Sigh. Every single time..

Guyz, I think almost everyone is facing same issue right now with api 25. How about we stop posting "same here" and "me too" comments since a lot of users who starred this post to receive any meaningful update would have their inbox spammed with same emails. Since bug has been assigned to their developer, i would be better in everyone's interest to just wait until they have anything to say. Thanks in advance.

I got the same problem like this

When you change tag from android.support.v7.widget.RecyclerView to only RecyclerView render good but for the record only works to preview when you compile change back to android.support.v7.widget.RecyclerView.

Same issue here after updating to build tools 25 any help will be appreciated.

A temporary solution is to replace <android.support.v7.widget.RecyclerView with <RecyclerView so you can see the rendered View. When compiling, change it back to <android.support.v7.widget.RecyclerView

Can you please post a hotfix release for this? Its a super productivity kill to either not see your layouts or to have to replace tags again and again.

The development team has fixed the issue that you have reported and it will be available in a future version of support library.

If you want it right now, consider using the newer canary version of
android studio.

Be careful when upgrading to 2.3. Canary.
The latest canary version has a compile-breaking bug when you are using databinding and annotation processing in your project.

This has been released in support library 25.0.1.
