The issue is present 100% of the time. After DP4 is installed by either flashing the whole image or applying OTA from the beta program or sideloading the OTA, all sensors stopped working and is immediately noticeable by the screen not rotating and adjusting its brightness automatically. I think the issue may only be specific to a certain group of devices.

I don't think you understand "100% of the time". The issue is always present, including the time when I was taking the bug report in #6.
I mentioned my time zone is UTC+8. The exact time is on the timestamp in the filename. But in case you can't read the filename for some reason, it's "2016-06-21-20-49-10". If you happened to not know how to convert time zones, it's 6/21/2016 5:49:10AM Pacific Time.
No matter what application I am using the issue is present. The bug report in #6 was taken on the home screen (i.e. Google Now Launcher).

Experiencing the same issue since dev preview 4 on a European Nexus 6P. No sensors that are not connected to a touch input are responding. Used a sensor readout app to try and see whether they are functional but not returning readings, but the application just says "Waiting for sensors to become ready". No auto rotate, no proximity sensor during phone calls, compass apps, and cardboard all not working.
These were all fine in Android M, and reverting to Android M resolves the issue.

Sensors appear to work fine with NPD90G DP5, except the BMP280 barometer (pressure), which is still not reporting data when checked with various sensor apps. However, I cannot confirm that it was working on M as I rarely use it. I don't remember any sensor reporting NaN or a constant 0 when checked when I was on M but I am not sure.

Running DP5 on Nexus 6P.
After a reboot, the phone works fine, but after a while, rotation will completely stop working. I always happen while playing Pokémon GO. And after it stops working in Pokémon GO, I can't rotate in any app. Other people have reported the same on reddit. Maybe it actually has something to do with Pokémon GO, or it's just a coincidence, since the game is so popular.

Not much to add but I can say I'm experiencing the same issue on DP5 on the Nexus 6P. Mine seems to always be linked to apps which request screen rotation, such as Plex and Pokemon Go. May just be a time thing as mentioned above.

There seem to be two separate issues being discussed here (and in bugs marked as duplicates of this one): the original reportewhere the fault is present 100% of the time and not affected by rebooting, and a similar bug that is temporarily resolved by rebooting but returns some time later.
I have the latter version of the issue, which in my case does not affect the proximity, ambient light or pressure sensors, or the 3D accelerometer. The sensors showing up with errors for me include gravity, gyroscope, magnetic field, linear acceleration, orientation and rotation vector.

I was also too fast to call it resolved earlier. After reboot sensors work for a while, but later some stop working while some keep working longer but finally stop reporting values. I'm on Nexus 6P and build NPD90G.
ja...@gmail.com <ja...@gmail.com> #41
I am experiencing a similar problem on my 6P with NPD90G. Screen rotation is not working since moving to DP5 (had no issues on NPD56N). Checking sensor information and it looks like accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetic field, gravity, linear acceleration, rotation vector, and orientation are all not functioning. A reboot corrects the problem for a short period of time (undetermined how long yet).
xz...@gmail.com <xz...@gmail.com> #42
I have a similar issue. I haven't noticed it before the DP5 but I notice it regularly now specially while playing Pokemon Go. When it happens, I notice the gyroscope and compass stop functioning but I never checked the other sensors. The fingerprint reader still works like the other reports state. As the other reports also state, I have to reboot my phone to get the sensors back to work.

I have noticed the same behavior in preview 5 on 6p where screen rotation stops working. It has occurred once without having launched Pokémon Go, but running the game at least appears to accelerate the onset. I downloaded a sensor test app after the last time it happened and the compass either report very inaccurate results or no results in a dedicated compass app. The sensor test app also reports downward acceleration of about 33m/s/s while not moving instead of the expected 9.8m/s/s as expected, however it does report this acceleration on the correct axis per the device orientation. I found this thread after rebooting and confirming normal function, but next time this occurs I will try to grab a bug report.

I've also had issues with my sensors on my 6p running both DP4 and DP5. As others have mentioned, rebooting will fix the issue temporarily. I've attached screenshots from GPS Status & Toolbox showing all the sensors that go haywire (even including the step counter!)

And Google Fit thinks I'm running most of the time instead of walking. Wouldn't surprise me if that's also caused by the malfunctioning sensors.

Hi,
I am running an a Nexus 5X bullhead with Preview 5, Build NPD90G, and for me the proximity sensor does not work. As soon as I make a call, the screen goes black, and only comes back if the other side ends the call.
Different Sensor apps show no values read from the sensor. Other sensors do not seem to be affected, though. With this behaviour, not being able to end a call from my side, the Developer Preview is unfortunately quite useless and should certainly undergo far more tests before a final release. I am quite disappointed by Google's QA.

Same issue with my Nexus 6P. After updating to Android 7 sensors stopped working and overall performance of phone went down. Then I enrolled ito beta version and same problem occurred. Updated now to 7.1.1 and still sensors not working properly. Main problems with proximity and ambient light and gyroscope. After update everything worked like a dream and after few hours started the same.

I did some more research after 7.0 was officially released. I did a complete factory reset to my Nexus 6P and did not restore backed up data or apps.
First one important note is that before doing that I did the full reset and I only installed Sensor Sense app to monitor the sensors and that was enough to break all the sensors. So I assume that the problem is a way that an app uses the sensors making them stop working. If I didn't install Sensor Sense the only sensor to stop working (that I noticed) was the brightness. Everything else kept working fine (I only tested compass and screen rotation since I could test them without installing any apps)
If I didn't install Sensor Sense, all sensors seemed to work except brightness because automatic brightness would stop working after a while. I tested screen rotation and compass (via an web app). I started installing apps one by one (on a by-need basis) and the sensors kept working, except the automatic brightness.
Now I updated to 7.1.1 DP via OTA and I installed Sensor Sense again and it seems that it does not break sensors anymore, but brightness sensor still breaks soon after a reboot. Pressure and proximity don't give any value in Sensor Sense even directly after a reboot. So automatic brightness works at first but after a while it gets stuck to some value and later doesn't return any value.
So apparently things have improved as the other sensors seem to be more stable now. But automatic brightness still stops working and pressure and proximity sensors don't seem to work for now.

Correction: proximity sensor does work after reboot, but pressure doesn't.

I too joined the beta program and received the 7.1.1 update in an attempt to resolve the sensor issues. My sensors worked for about an hour and then they stopped.
Is there anyone who has been truly able to fix this issue? Has google even officially acknowledged this as a known issue?
to...@gmail.com <to...@gmail.com> #99
I had the problem since dp of 7.0. I went back to 6 after noticing (I am number #13 in this thread). Now, I flashed a custom ROM and kernel, latest pure Nexus and flash kernel. This is a Android 7 ROM. All sensors are working and responding also in sensor sense, but pressure is showing 0 hPa.

My 6p sensor issue has been fixed along with much better battery life since
moving to 7.1.1. 7.0 had borked both.
Could it be a dreaded 3rd party app causing the issue?
I am running geezer programming no Facebook no twitter etc

Stock Nexus 6P running 7.1.1 - pressure sensor has seemed OK for the last week or so then " died " last night. Other sensors variable - occ none get started at boot time. Light sensor seizes at intervals as does rotation sensor. Sometimes a reboot will fix all other times no benefit esp to pressure sensor.
jo...@gmail.com <jo...@gmail.com> #103
Are there any updates on when these sensor issues will be fixed?
ga...@gmail.com <ga...@gmail.com> #104
Updated to 7.1.1 on a Nexus 6p with no issues until about two weeks in, when the screen had a 6-8 second delay to turn on. After unenrolling in the beta to go back to 7.0 the sensors stopped working and factory resetting to go back to 6.0 fixed the screen delay but killed off all the sensors as seen in the initial post in sensor sense.

By now I've all my sensors working fine, and I don't know why. They were not working at all, nut a week ago or so, they started to work perfectly. I currently have 7.1.1 and the automatic brightness disable
ms...@gmail.com <ms...@gmail.com> #106
I hope 7.1.1 will resolve this proximity sensor. Root will kill this proximity sensor on 7.0 , but early day, my Nexus 6P fall down from my desk, proximity sensor dosen,t work, so i have to back to Android 6.0.

Looks like beta version of 7.1.1 doesn't solve the sensor issue. It is so annoying! And the performance of phone is worse than with Android 6! Is there any solution to this? Thinking to change the phone already...
va...@gmail.com <va...@gmail.com> #108
Looks like automatic brightness adjustment makes all those sensor issues (ambient and proximity).
ms...@gmail.com <ms...@gmail.com> #109
proximity sensor can't work while calling a phone ,anyone know how to slove it ?
va...@gmail.com <va...@gmail.com> #110
^^^ Switch off adaptive brightness and restart the phone. I just sent mine to Huawei as I think it is hardware problem, because factory reset and other options never solved that.
mo...@gmail.com <mo...@gmail.com> #111
Ha! I was worried there is something wrong with the phone. I can confirm the problem with sensors. Generally pressure sensor doesn't work at all (but I remember on factory 6.x it works just fine) and return NaN only. For the rest it seems to work after a reboot, but it randomly stops/freezes mostly after longer screen-off's (overnight or after longer phone call) and reboot is required to "fix" them.

Has this issue been resolved with 7.1.1?
yx...@gmail.com <yx...@gmail.com> #113
Running 7.1.1 custom rom (stock+) for a few weeks now , sensors have been working fine.
iv...@gmail.com <iv...@gmail.com> #114
7.1.1, automatic brightness off, and my sensors work great for days, if the problem appears again, restart your phone one or two times and they work fine again
mo...@gmail.com <mo...@gmail.com> #115
The problem is still there after 7.1.1. It's definitly less frequent h
as I see it first time after days not minutes after reboot.
For now it was only light&proximity sensor and both return after a reboot.

I have installed Android O beta, it was laggy so i decided to downgrade back to Nougat 7.1.2... But then all sensors stopped working, any ideas guys?
wh...@gmail.com <wh...@gmail.com> #124
Downgrading from Android O beta to 7.1.2 caused all sensors to stop working. I re-enrolled into the beta program and upgraded to Android O again and now the sensors are working again..
dr...@gmail.com <dr...@gmail.com> #125
Downgradeing from the O beta (which had it's own slew of issues) caused all of these exact issues.
st...@gmail.com <st...@gmail.com> #126
I also downgraded from O to 7.1.2 (N2G47O) and the sensors stopped working. Updating back to O beta fixed them, so I tried going back to 7.1.2 and lost sensors again. Flashed 6.0.1 (MTC20L), verified sensors were working, then went back up to 7.1.2 (N2G47O). Sensors are still working on 7.1.2 (N2G47O).
