AS 3.5. has a complete rework of device selection. Also, instant run is now gone and we have Apply Changes (https://medium.com/androiddevelopers/android-studio-project-marble-apply-changes-e3048662e8cd )
Long story short, we no longer need to maintain a connection to the device so apply a hot swap would just be a matter of picking the right device and hitting the button.

Description
When there are multiple emulators and USB-connected devices available, it helps to show the Device Chooser dialog even when clicking the "Instant Run" button. In Android Studio 1.5, the developer had the option to "Use the same device for future launches". This option is now effectively curtailed. Currently, if an "Instant Run" is ongoing, the developer needs to stop and then re-run the app. Not terribly difficult, but the UX could definitely be polished to allow dev to still see the device chooser catalog even when Instant Run is available.
I understand that if a different device is selected, the Instant Run session on the previous device must end, and I believe that's a fine experience.
