OK, WHEN will this happen? I realize this a question for Google, but it is relevant
to the forum topic. Yes, we can EDIT a spreadsheet. BUT NOT a document, nor
slideshow, nor...AND we can CREATE nothing!
I do not like the notepad apps; yeah, they do in a pinch, but I use Google Docs for
capturing even memos and notes, in addition to full-fledged documents. I found the
"cloud" thing to be a really rich way of being able to access and manage my documents
from anywhere, only to find "anywhere" did not include my Google G1 (seems the most
natural extension of the "cloud computing" proclamation; otherwise, we are just
surfing).
DataViz has released an Android version of their great Documents2Go application. WHY
should I have to buy this when I am a Google Docs user? I do not want to sync D2G to
Google Docs or my laptop, I just want it THERE.
I love my G1, but this issue is a burr under the proverbial saddle...
WHEN WILL IT CHANGE?

Oddly enough I found the same kind of issues with their web browser Google Chrome. I
experimented with it because I figured that a Google product would handle Google docs
best. Chrome crashed repeatedly and had almost no customizable features. I finally
accepted the reality that Mozilla Firefox was more stable for Google docs and apps
and that those developers had done a better job of added apps for Google products.
Perhaps some other mobile OS developer will figure out how to make Google docs fully
functional.

I waited for a long time for the Verizon Android release, and I am almost astounded
at the usability and ease with which I was able to migrate older MS data (I was
upgrading from Windows Mobile). I love using this smart phone. However, basic
document creation, editing, and syncing to SOME kind of repository is ABSOLUTELY
ESSENTIAL. Historically, when it came to the "desktop to go" functionality Windows
Mobile thoroughly excelled. Google, catch up! Otherwise Windows Phone will :(

Since Android has Google Gears, it should work offline like it does on a PC with
Google Gears installed. When offline, one can still edit, via browser, a doc on that
has been synced locally. The changes are then automatically merged when online
access is restored.
An app for offline access should not be made, unless for some reason the Gears
paradigm is unworkable.

I tried GDocs... it allows viewing text documents but without any of the styles
(Italics, for example). BUT if you save modifications using GDocs ALL of the
formatting in the entire document is lost, everything reverts to plain text.
Luckily, google docs has revision tracking so I could easily revert (once I located a

This does seem like a no-brainer. Why wasn't integration with GDocs built into the
OS? Why aren't ALL Google products built into the OS? Tasks, Picasa, Books, etc.
Part of the reason I love Google so much is the thoughtfulness they usually put into
their products (along with the simplicity that is a Google trademark).
Hope this one gets worked out soon. In anticipation of the Android OS I began using
GDocs religiously in early 2009, now I'm sorta stuck.

As far as I can tell this is standard Google practise. i.e. they give no notification

One day you will see it announced on their blog that this functionality has been added

You would think it would make perfect sense to have this as part of the android OS.
But then you would think being able to search your google calendar would also be

The solution is to simply click the 'star' button on the issue, and not comment on it.
More stars means more attention is requested from android devs.
More comments just annoys everyone, and is counterproductive (unless your comment
includes, say, a patch, which it really can't in this case).
I would be very surprised if Google didn't already have a plan for this in the works.
They probably just don't want to release something which isn't finished yet. Patience
is a virtue, etc, etc.

Ok, I know these constant e-mail are annoying, of all the issues in android I have
starred this one gets the most inane updates. So I am just going to say it here, I don't
think android needs a native google docs app, that is not the way that people would
like to develop, maintaining support for all the various input devices and hardware
platforms. I think it would be much better if Google Docs got offline support using
HTML5 (instead of gears which has been depreciated). This would allow android uses
to have a functioning offline viewer for GDocs. The only thing that needs to be done
then is finding an elegant way to allow the editing on documents on a mobile device,
but in my opinion that can wait, as it is not a very common requirement. Hopefully
with the release of Chrome OS (another reason not to make individual apps) later this
year, all these services will be required to support offline using HTML5 so Android
will see big wins then.

@97 - those preferences are global. I don't want to kill updates from all my projects. Nor
do I wish to create a special filter for every issue I'm tracking. So when a thread is
overtaken by the illiterate, I simply unstar it. Perhaps someday the masses will learn that
read before reply works pretty well.
Now, what I would like is a drivel filter so I get notified whenever an actual update occurs,
but not when stupid stuff like "add me" and this discussion are posted. Perhaps we could
auto add tags like this;
<ignorance> new text here </ignorance>
Users who are in the know could simply remove the tags, while the add me crowd would be
clueless. The we could write an email filter that works as intended.

@sander.borsboom (Comment 112),
This doesn't show that Googlers don't use their own products. This only shows that
they spend so much time working, that they're already behind a full computer and have
full access to Docs, with no need to support it via a mobile device.
In the meantime, Googlers probably also have access to 2.2... which gives them the
ability to tether their netbooks and laptops to their phones, giving them Internet
access from anywhere using their computers.
In any case, it's very likely this issue is being worked on or has already been
resolved... but since Googlers use their own products, they generally form the
initial test bed before it's released to outside users. So, they might already have
access internally and it's still in testing.
For instance, Google Drive has been used by Googlers for years, while the rest of the
world is still waiting.

Hey everyone, I've just received an update to WildArt GDocs App and I can edit Google Text documents and Spreadsheets.
da...@gmail.com <da...@gmail.com> #140
Dear Google geniuses,
This is to notify you of a business critical flaw that occured this week with respect to a Google Document API third party application.
Gdocs by WildArt, Google's officially sanctioned third party solution for Google Document editing on Android devices, was overwriting files with blank documents in Google Docs upon synch/open.
While the vendor was able to fix the problem extremely quickly, it was not before business disruption occured with respect to the apparent loss of Documents on the Android device.
Only when resynching via desktop was I able to go back and retrieve the overwritten versions of documents -- via the desktop version of Google Docs revision history feature. So fortunately, no documents were actually lost. However, I still had to go through all of my documents to ensure that nothing else was erased from the latest version synched via Gdocs. It appears that only Documents that I explicitly opened after synching with the problematic version were effected.
This business incident raises wider issues with respect to
a) general pre-testing and quality control of third party apps and their updates that synchronize with or otherwise update shared files and data of any kind.
b) the longstanding and longsuffering need for a native Google Docs editing solution for the Android device.
In fairness to WildArt, they've posited an otherwise sound editing solution for Google Documents on the device where there's been no recognizable effort to this effect, to date by Google.
In addition, I think it's fair to say that no one wants to disrupt the tremendous creativity and resultant add-on functionality in the third party market with excessive regulation. But that doesn't preclude the basic testing of apps on all devices and Android versions prior to release of an app update.
Though WildArt did rapidly address the issue at hand, this incident would not have occured if this level of testing and quality control had been in place.
Regardless, I think considering the incredible progress Google has made on other fronts to improve the Android's use as a serious business device, it's not too much to state that now, unequivocably, is the time for an "official" editable and stable version of Google Docs on Android for editing as well as reading. To get this accomplished in short order, Google should explicitly, rather than implicitedly, adopt Wild Art's Google Docs editing solution and thus work more concertedly with the vendor so as to work through the kinds of problems that occured this week, as well as to incorporate the broader range of desktop Google Docs features.
Thanks for your prompt attention to this urgent matter.

It seems I can create a document and edit it once.
I cannot edit documents already saved in docs, nor can I re-edit the document I just created!
Maybe this functionality hasn't been enabled in my region yet or is a current universal limitation?

I think we should at least be able to upload/download the documents
(that should not be too difficult to implement).
After we can always use 3rd party applications to modify them.

I use Google as a cloud intermediary between MS Outlook data and my Android phone. I'm currently using gDocs which is a third party online-only app. I occasionally find myself in areas without Internet service so Google Docs is inaccessible. In addition, I chose an economy data plan so I need to limit data usage.
I understand the concept: Google services are designed for online use. But as Google develops an Android Docs app, give serious consideration to including offline data access as well.

Android NEEDS an office suite with non-cloud storage/creation/editing - a lot of times, I'm nowhere *near* a wifi hotspot or able to use mobile wireless (on an airplane, out in the boonies where I can't get a signal, in Canada where mobile roaming charges are draconian). Why isn't there a form of Google Docs with local capability as part of Android?

With the advent of the Xoom and other Android based tablets, the need for a fully functional office suite should be apparent. If not, then the Xoom and all other tablets are a fun diversion instead of a laptop replacement. I think it would set Google and hardware developers like Motorola apart from their Apple counterparts if they had offline and full functionality to their many popular Google apps, especially docs.

It seems it cannot edit docs created with the old interface. If you open one of these documents from your PC browser, docs will show you this note: "Would you like to see this document in the latest version of the editor? Preview". Open the preview and then convert the document to the new format. At this time you'll be able to edit it also from the android application.

This is rather bureaucratic response. Better customer service would EITHER triage the issue/ticket to the correct Google bugtracker on everybody's behalf and provide a link.
OR
at least identify the correct place for this issue... as it isn't obvious.
Google considers software like Android maps etc to be part of the Licensing agreement for android to phone vendors... so it's not absurd to assume that critical software to the android stack should be talked about here.

Thanks so much for sharing this! I have been really interested in finding out a little bit more about this site: http://www.spiritdsp.com . Are you familiar with them?
Description
does not have, of all the complaints of its detracters, the lack of support
for Google Docs is the one that has the most traction for me. I have been
able to edit and create Docs on my Palm for many years, thanks to Documents
to Go by DataViz, so doing such things is a part of my 'smartphone
utility'. I really like Google Docs (though it is a maturing product), and
thought that support for editing and creating the same on the G1 was a no-
brainer -- of course it would be there! But no! I have read there are
various issues, but they sound like excuses and can be overcome.
THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE RESOLVED! If I wind up paying DataViz for a
solution, it will be a severe disappointment.
