iPad: on battery power with screen locked, having bt-keyboard & bt-mouse causes iPad to reboot

Posted on Jul 13, 2010 by Helpful Bird

I'm using bt-keyboard and mouse from Cydia on my iPad at the latest versions available. I've noticed that if you have them active and connected to a device, if you disconnect the iPad from power and lock the screen it will cause the device to restart after a few minutes. The device has to be left idle for about four or five minutes, any interaction with it will "reset" the timer and keep the rebooting from happening

I am wondering if it's potentially related to this issue which I also noticed using Insomnia and KeepAwake:

Just to add, it's a pretty serious reboot when it happens. The device is stuck on the Apple logo for about five minutes before the lock screen finally reappears. The reboot is far longer than it takes for the device to boot up normally.

I'm going to test later if it only happens with both on (I use both bt-keyboard as well as bt-mouse) or if only one or the other trigger the reboot. I'm no programmer but I'm wondering if it's something to do with the backgrounding daemon on the iPad as I've noticed the same exact issue from Insomnia and KeepAwake in exactly the same manner.

hello josha. thanks for reporting. I have no further information yet, but it seems to be the same problem that haunts Insomnia. I plan to re-write both apps during this Fall and fully support re-connecting - in that case, both apps would just disconnect when the device gets locked, but re-connect when you start typing.

Hi Matthias, I experience the same issue. Unfortunately, the device doesn't re-connect again. If we could have "re-connecting", it would be appreciate. BTW, iPad Version is 3.2(7B367), Keyboard is Apple Wireless Keyboard & Mouse is Sony Vaio VGP-BMS30. An interesting phenomenon, when I go to Keyborad app again. It is not in "Activiting" or "Searching". If I'm lucky, it will search again but all devices w/ bluetooth icon. Even Apple Wireless Keyboard, it won't show as "keyboard" icon. Hope it helps.

no reconnect yet, but it doesn't crash anymore since a long time.
