Posted on May 17, 2010 by Swift Oxhi all. next step. It looks like TomTom and some other apps expect the course value of the location data to be set, too. I wrote a little test app that would generate location data for driving around my block. After also calculating the course, TomTom did drive in the correct direction and also managed corners properly. I'll finalize this in the next days. Getting close!

Posted on May 20, 2010 by Swift OxCan all that had this issue before please try again with BTstack GPS 1.2. I have multiple positive reports of TomTom (and all other software) working now.

Posted on May 20, 2010 by Massive GiraffeTomTom is working fine now. All I can complaint is about 'bad GPS signal' message appearing at some times and greying the screen for a second. This is less frequent when disabling iPhone 3GS internal GPS

Posted on May 21, 2010 by Helpful MonkeyHi. I tested version 1.2 on Ipod Touch. With TomTom I have the same problem than Dexter. TomTom seems to loose signal shortly every few seconds. I also tested with Navigon and it works correctly. Thanks for the good work.
Posted on May 21, 2010 by Swift OxThe "Connect GPS" appears when the GPS looses it's fixes temporarily. I did not know how to handle that case and was telling the app that the GPS disappeared. I intend to change that to sending an invalid location - TomTom should then just ignore the GPS for a few seconds without graying the screen.
Posted on May 25, 2010 by Helpful GiraffeHi Matthias, Indeed it should be nice if the the GPS could not loose contact, but as long the car is moving it is not disturbing. But I have a question. I also use the ipod bluetooth for my BT-headphone. On my bike it would be nice to use both, GPS and headset. Do you think it is possible to combine those functions?
Thanks Jelle
Comment #19
Posted on May 26, 2010 by Swift OxI'll try to hide the fact that the GPS temporarily looses it fix (that's normal) instead of telling the app that the GPS is gone.
The use of Apple BT and BTstack at the same time is not possible, as there is a single BT module which can be controlled only by one Bluetooth Stack. To use BT headphones and GPS in parallel either requires patching Apple BT to allow for GPS (tough hacking & not sustainable) or the implementation of BT Headset support on top of BTstack, which is possible but I don't know of anybody working on that. :(

Posted on May 26, 2010 by Happy OxHi. This will be a great program. It looks like you are supporting it very well. I still have the demo since I wanted to see if it worked with my PalmOne BT GPS. The device is recognized and gets connected but in the next screen it shows "Fix: Invalid" and doesn't show GPS coordinates. Can you tell me what it wrong? Bad Device or Unsupported Device? Thanks!

Posted on May 28, 2010 by Grumpy BearI am having the same problem with Navigon. As I am driving around the speed goes from 55 to 118 to 0 and so on. It just displays random speeds and the map kind of jumps around. Thanks

Posted on May 31, 2010 by Swift OxHi. I've modified BTstack GPS to ignore temporary losses of GPS fix and also improved the course & speed calculation. I was driving yesterday and it's much better than in on of the videos posted on the net. The reported speed is still a bit flaky although driving with cruise control. I'll fix that the next days for the upcoming 1.3. version. Stay tuned, I'm on it!

Posted on Jun 29, 2010 by Happy WombatI updated TT to 1.3 this morning, and am now getting a new alert that scrolls constantly across the top of the screen "Connect to GPS". This did not happen previously with TT 1.0
The routing and tracking seem fine, it's just that constant scrolling that gets annoying.
I am using GTstack GPS 1.4 on iTouch 2G.
Posted on Jun 29, 2010 by Swift Ox@mikebock what's "TT"? TomTom? Did you update to iOS 4? BTstack GPS adds the "gps" capability on devices that miss it like the iPod touch. Please re-try after a reboot (to make sure "gps" capability was added).
If the scrolling alert is wasn't there in older version, and you get it after a reboot it looks like TomTom in 1.3 now insists on their own external GPS on iPod devices instead of checking the "gps" capability. In this case, first complain at TomTom's customer support. If this doesn't help, it would require a patch to get rid of their check, which won't be fun. Please let me know, what you can figure out.

Posted on Jun 30, 2010 by Massive GiraffeHi Matthias, I just bought license for the BTstack GPS, it works great with my Holux M-1000 except one annoyance: when the car is stationary, the orientation in the 3D view of the Tom Tom 1.3 sometimes jerks to the left/right momentarily then returns to the correct orientation. What do you think could be the problem?
Besides that, can this hack work with Papago GPS navigation app?
I'm using BTstack GPS 1.3 on iOS3.0 on ipod touch 2G
Thanks!

Posted on Jun 30, 2010 by Happy WombatThanks for the reply Matthias.
Yes, TT is Tomtom, and no I haven't updated to iOS4 yet.
Note that this worked fine on my jailboken 3.12 2G itouch and Tomtom 1.0; it just started when I updated to Tomtom v1.3.
Now, I can't really complain to Tomtom since I have an unsupported device: jailbroken itouch and PalmOne GPS. ;)
In researching, it looks like roqy is having a similar problem and is looking to resolve too.

Posted on Jun 30, 2010 by Swift Ox@winstontanjohan @mikebock looks like you have the same setup (iPod touch) and TomTom 1.3 but you have different levels of success. can you try to figure out what's different between you two? I can only comment that TomTom 1.2 runs well on iPad. :) If it's related to TomTom, I had a quick look at the 1.2 version and that looked like one could try to nudge it easily into the believe that there is a GPS (as long as "they" don't actively try not to get nudged :) )

Posted on Jul 1, 2010 by Grumpy HippoI don't have that issue with Navigon on my ipod touch 2G and 3.13. FWIW, it looks like roqyBT solved the problem with TomTom 1.3 and the 2G.

Posted on Jul 2, 2010 by Swift OxOk. I'll try to figure out what TomTom doesn't like about your iPod touch. I only have iPhone 3G and iPad Wifi. The iPad Wifi also doens't have build-in GPS.
Posted on Jul 2, 2010 by Happy WombatFWIW, I paid $5 for the CoPiot application and it has even worse problems with my setup. It finds the GPS, but at some point in the driving, it looses it and puts up the message "Determing Current Location" and then never finds it. I exit out of CoPilot, go into BTStack, which seems to still be able to see the GPS receiver. I then disconnect GPS, reconnect, start up Copilot again, and then it is good again (until the next time it loses it while driving). Could it be that the GPS is putting out a weak signal that BTstack is not handling well, or sending bad data when the GPS loses a signal, or something like that? Does that even make sense?
Posted on Jul 3, 2010 by Happy WombatIs there any capture utility I can use to send you the output of my gps receiver to see if it's sending weak or poor data? That might help you in the troubleshooting, but I don't know how to do it or what would be useful to you.
Posted on Jul 3, 2010 by Swift Ox@mikebock yes. there is. please send the file /tmp/hci_dump.pklg via the command line or using iFile from Cydia.
In general, BTstack GPS stops sending GPS location if it doesn't get valid locations from the GPS. What does BTstack GPS says for Fix: when CoPilot looses the fix?

Posted on Jul 3, 2010 by Happy WombatHere is that file as it is now. I have not used the gps this morning, so don't know if this is a history log of activity (I used it frequently yesterday), or if you need me to capture while it's having problems.
Posted on Jul 3, 2010 by Happy WombatHere are some steps to help explain better:
- Start up BTStack and get fix.
- Open up Copilot and it finds gps and I begin driving.
- Some period of time later the message comes up "Determing current position" meaning no gps fix.
- Exit out of Copilot and bring up Tomtom 1.3.
- Tomtom finds the gps, finds a fix, and everything seems normal except for the flashing message "Connect to GPS". TOmtom seems to be fully functional though.
- Exit out of Tomtom and go back to Copilot. Copilot still displays "Determining current position" so still cannot find gps fix.
- Exit out of Copilot and bring up BTStack.
- BTstack still shows fix and everything looks fine. Disconnect anyway. Reconnect to PalmOne GPS.
- Go back to Copilot and it finds the gps fix this time.
So I conclude that the fix is still accurate coming from BTStack otherwise TT would not work properly. But TT still sees something odd as it continues to scroll the "Connect to GPS" message.
Also, at one time, Tomtom reported a message when first started like "Poor GPS reception" or something similar. I can't get it to do that again, as it won't display that. Only the "Connect to GPS" message.

Posted on Jul 4, 2010 by Swift OxOk. back to the TomTom issue for iPod touch users. I've purchased TomTom 1.4 and snooped around its innards a bit. I think I have a working patch, but I cannot test without an iPod touch, my iPad Wifi does not give me a "Connect to GPS" message.
To test, please delete GPS-Support.dylib in /Library/MobileSubstrate/DynamicLibraries and replace it with the attached one. Does it make TomTom happy? :)
- GPS-Support.dylib 24.88KB
Comment #46
Posted on Jul 4, 2010 by Happy WombatNo, getting the same results. I tried twice, and rebooted the itouch, but still getting "connect to gps".
Posted on Jul 4, 2010 by Swift Ox@mikebock you get "connect to gps" although BTstack GPS says "Fix: 3D"?
Posted on Jul 4, 2010 by Happy WombatYes, that's correct I have a 3D fix with 5 satellites.
Posted on Jul 4, 2010 by Happy WombatNote again that even though TT says "Connect to GPS" it sees a gps and continues to follow me as I drive. So it's not a complete loss of signal but maybe not a strong signal, if that's possible.
Posted on Jul 5, 2010 by Massive GiraffeI've replaced the file GPS-Support with yours and I'm still getting the same "connect to gps". Mine has a 3D fix with 6 sats.

Posted on Jul 5, 2010 by Swift OxOK. thanks for trying. In the new extension, I've patched "isGPSHardwareAvailable" to just return YES.That would have been a clean approach. Anyway, I'll make another one that makes TomTom believe it is running on an iPhone (when running on an iPod).

mikebock, do you often get greyed screen due to lost of signal?
Posted on Jul 6, 2010 by Swift Ox@mikebock & @winstontanjonhan: thanks for testing. I'll assume that that's a useable solution for TomTom and include it in the next update. I'm wondering if I should write to TomTom's customer support and complain that it contains hard-coded application behavior based on the device type, which is not recommended by Apple's development guidelines... :) TomTom should purley rely on the "GPS" capability and not make his own assumptions based on model.

Posted on Jul 6, 2010 by Happy Wombat@winstontanjonhan: Yep, sure do. I sometimes get the "Poor GPS signal" message now, but I assumed it was due to my old, cheap PalmOne GPS unit. But come to think of it, I don't recall getting that with Tomtom v 1.0. It's interesting that you are getting that too.
@matthias.ringwald: That would surely be poor app dev if that's what the TT team has done.
Posted on Jul 6, 2010 by Happy WombatI received the "Poor GPS signal" about every 30-45 seconds on my drive in this morning. This is way more than what I got on Tomtom 1.0, so something else must be different.
As another point, Copilot doesn't even pick up a location (getting "Determining Current Position"), but seems to see that there is a GPS device.
Posted on Jul 7, 2010 by Massive Giraffe@mikebock: I'm using Holux M-1000 and I'm getting the same message as you. If both of us are getting the same experience, shouldn't it be caused by the TT?
Why can't TT code properly? Arghh...
Posted on Jul 7, 2010 by Happy WombatYes, I agree that it is acting strangely. What I'd like to see is the "stability" (meaning no "Poor GPS signal") of Tomtom 1.0 without the "Connect to GPS" flash scrolling. Somehow it seems that this would be possible with BTstack, but maybe not. How can we make TT think it's connected to the tomtom gps car kit mount?
Posted on Jul 8, 2010 by Swift OxBTstack GPS only connects and receives the GPS data from the external device and converts them into the internal CoreLocation format. GPS quality is part of the GPS output. So the first question would be what's quality reported by the GPS, is it really ok or really "poor"? Not sure what to do/offer. BTstack GPS could pretend that the GPS signal is always perfect, but somehow this doesn't seem like actual solution. ... I'll try to display the signal quality on the main screen, so we can get some data on that in the next version.
Posted on Jul 8, 2010 by Happy WombatThat would be a good idea. From my itouch Tomtom 1.3 says "Poor GPS signal", Copilot drops out occassionally (but seems to work better), and Navigon doesn't complain at all and seems to work the best.

Posted on Jul 12, 2010 by Happy WombatFeedback after one week: Ended up buying Navigon 1.6 and went on a 175 mile round trip this past weekend. BTStack worked perfectly on my iTouch and PalmOne GPS. It was virtually perfect. This combo works much better than TomTom 1.3.
I also bought CoPilot (I couldn't pass up the $5 price). However that didn't work as well. For the most part it read the gps signal, but occassionally it would lose the signal (Determing Current Position) or would put me on a different street or direction than I was on. For a GPS that you have to rely on, I wouldn't recommend the combo, but as a back up $5 is worth the price.
So, thanks again Matthias for a nice utility!

i have 3rd gen ipod touch on 3.1.3 firmware.
Posted on Jul 13, 2010 by Swift Ox@jeffrey.liu11 hi. as far as I know, the TomTom cradle provides GPS to the iPhone/iPod and it is used by the TomTom software and it is connected via Apple's proprietary Extended Accessory protocol via Bluetooth. So TomTom app should work with TomTom cradle out of the box without Jailbreak. What do you do? Try to use the TomTom cradle with other navigation software?

Posted on Jul 13, 2010 by Helpful BirdI have tomtom 1.4 app installed in my iPod. When I connect my iPod to the tomtom cradle and open the tomtom app, it says I need to connect to a gps. After some searching around I think it's because I need a Bluetooth stack. I have this btstack a try by the btstack does not "see" my tomtom device. It just searches forever.
Posted on Jul 13, 2010 by Swift Ox@jeffrey.liu11 Please try the TomTom Car Kit Tool from TomTom with Apple's Bluetooth turned on as mikebock suggested. TomTom's iPhone/iPod GPS cradle should work with an unmodified iOS - this also means it does not work with any other computer or smarthone as it implements Apple's proprietary External Accessory protocol.
Please contact TomTom for support with the TomTom cradle. If you don't need BTstack GPS (as you don't have a standard BT GPS), please email me at iphone@ringwald.ch for a refund.

Posted on Jul 20, 2010 by Swift Ox@mikebock BTstack runs fine on OS 4.0 as far as I can tell. However, I'm rather disappointed with 4.0 on my iPhone 3G, it just got slower although I didn't enable extra features like Multitasking. So, I wouldn't recommend 4.0 for non latest-gen devices (3GS, latest iPod)... I'll probably downgrade the 3G if possible when I can get an iPhone 4G

Posted on Jul 23, 2010 by Swift Ox@athomas002 Hi. TO use BTstack GPS, you start the app and connect to your BT GPS. After that, you see your location on the map. Now, leave BTstack GPS with the HOME button and start TomTom (or any other location app). It should pick up the GPS location. If this doesn't work, please verify that the BTstack icon in the status bar stays on for more than 10 seconds after you leave BTstack GPS. If it goes away although you have a valid license, please try to remove or reinstall Backgrounder.

Posted on Jul 23, 2010 by Swift Oxno. BTstack GPS does "native Backgrounding", but I've had several people for which Backgrounder broke it - still don't know. Basically, both work together fine. If you have it installed, check that you select "Native Backgrounding" for BTstack GPS.

Posted on Aug 4, 2010 by Swift Oxhi. what you mean by "time sown wrong"? The app shows time in UTC as received from the GPS satellites - if I didn't make mistake it's highly accurate. Posted on Aug 10, 2010 by Grumpy WombatHi, I've just purchased the license and intalled BTstack 1.4 on my ipod touch 3G with 64G, which was jailbroken and runs with OS4.0. When I connected to the external GPS receiver (Bluei), it said "GPS connected" ,but ther is no GPS fix. Tomtom 1.4 also showed no GPS fix. It looks most likely that the GPS receiver does not work. Beside this, it there any other reason? Thanks alot!

Posted on Aug 10, 2010 by Swift OxIf it says "GPS connected" and you get updates to the shown UTC clock and you don't get a location: a) I still have a bug in the NMEA parser b) your GPS doesn't work. Feel free to connect again, let it run for 5 minutes at a place where you should have GPS reception, like on your balcony, and then send me (iphone@ringwald.ch) or attach the file /tmp/hci_dump.pklg here.

Posted on Aug 11, 2010 by Swift PandaHello, I have a similar configuration as ychen79 (ipod touch 3G with 64GB, jailbroken, running OS4.0, external GPS Holux M-241). Today I've tried your program in connection with TomTom 1.4.1 for the first time. Everything works fine except of the flashing "Connect to GPS"-message about every 10-15 seconds. So far nothing new. But i've discovered that the message and the grayed screen is only a problem when you use the navigation function of TomTom. If you only display the map with your actual position in TomTom everything works fine, no connection losses anymore. I hope this will help you to solve the problem. Apart from that thanks for the great program!

Posted on Aug 20, 2010 by Grumpy CatPurchased BTstack GPS 1.4. Also bought TomTom 1.4.1 from iTunes store. I have 3G 32Gbyte ipod touch running IOS 4.0. I just downloaded the second GPS-Support.dylib from July 5 above and installed it.
It didn't work on Tom-Tom for me either. Other apps I have, - Navigon, xGPS and Maps, are working fine.
From what I've seen and read, the Tom-tom folks must have code that looks for their cradle GPS unit, and is causing this crappy random behavior with any other GPS input. Sure hope you can back engineer a way around that code.

Posted on Aug 22, 2010 by Swift Ox@ychen79 I had a look at your log file and I see no error, except that your GPS receiver does not send any data after the connection is established :(. Does it work with other software on Mac/Win?

Posted on Aug 26, 2010 by Swift Oxhi all. I've made to changes in BTstack GPS 1.5. First, the device claims to be an iPhone if it is an iPod and TomTom is running. Second, I've set the accuracy to 1.0m, independent from what the GPS tells us. That should reduce warnings from within apps. Please give it a try.

Posted on Aug 26, 2010 by Grumpy CatSadly TomTom 1.4.1 on my iPod touch 3G 32GB IOS 4.0 is still flashing "connect to GPS". & randomly seeming to lose connection (gray screen). I do like that this update remembers previous device when connecting GPS.

Posted on Aug 26, 2010 by Swift Ox@irreal thanks. I just figured, I could try TomTom on my borrowed iPod touch 1st generation without Bluetooth, as I could just run my GPS injections test app. Will need to update it to 3.0 first (it's on 2.2.1 for BTstack Keyboard testing) - I don't want to buy an iPod touch 32 GB now, as there are new ones coming out soon I guess

Posted on Aug 28, 2010 by Grumpy CatI'm keen on finding a way to get TomTom to behave itself. I also bought roqyBT, and he just released a test version for IOS 4.0 on my ipod 3G 32GB. It is interesting that it works really well with TomTom - ALMOST. The flashing of "Connect to GPS" still happens, but, TomTom never loses the GPS (gray screen behavior). roqyBT4 supposedly uses the native BT stack in some fashion.
I like that two of you are working on this issue of getting BT GPS units to work with the ipod/iphone, and will do what I can to support you both!

Posted on Sep 6, 2010 by Swift Ox@ee_iwan@yahoo.com BTstack GPS works with all standard GPS receivers and apps that don't actively try to avoid getting location data from somewhere else.

Posted on Sep 7, 2010 by Swift Ox@ee_iwan@yahoo.com ok. Please install trial version of BTstack GPS and test with your Bluetooth GPS. If it works then buy a copy. If it doesn't work with papago maps, please tell me at iphone@ringwald.ch and I will either fix it or refund your purchase.

Posted on Sep 14, 2010 by Swift CatI decided to use BTstack GPS as a SatNav full time but now after opening BTstack GPS it shows a Red Bluetooth logo at the top, when I then open iGo to start using it, even before it has loaded fully, the Logo fades away and then disappears completely. After iGo has opened it cannot pick up a GPS signal. I tried using Backgrounder to keep it open but it doesn't help at all.

Posted on Sep 21, 2010 by Swift Ox@ee_iwan please make sure that you have fully activated your PayPal account by either putting money on it or linking it to a bank account. I don't know much about the Cydia payment process, please email saurik@saurik.com if you don't manage to buy anything.

Posted on Dec 8, 2010 by Swift Ox@hhussein07 I don't understand the intention of your comment. It looks like you are unhappy with BTstack GPS because you have problems using it. What's your problem with BTstack GPS?
Posted on Dec 10, 2010 by Happy Monkeywill the reason I purchased it was my 3gs 4.1 jailbroken iphone' gps was not good that every time i use navigon it says gps not sufficent and I READ THAT BTstack 1.5 was suppose to fix this issue so I purchased it and once I opened the app, it states SEARCHING..... AND STAYS THAT WAY

Posted on Dec 11, 2010 by Swift Ox@hhussein07 I'm still not sure about your problem. You're talking about Navigon first and then complain about BTstack GPS not finding your GPS device if I understand your comments. Please write me at iphone@ringwald.ch describing what you did, what you expected and what happened.

Posted on Jan 17, 2011 by Swift PandaHello, I can't understand why you close this issue. The problem I have described in #110 is still there and I'm still waiting for a solution.
Posted on Jan 17, 2011 by Swift Ox@daniel I've closed it because the original issue was about speed variations caused by BTstack GPS not handling the timestamps in the GPS data properly and/or calculating the course.
you'e "highjacked" this issue, which makes it hard for me to manage stuff/keep up. I've post a test version that suppresses the annoying "Connect to GPS" bug in TomTom in issue #84 yesterday. Please test that and let me know - but not on this "issue" page ;)

Posted on Mar 2, 2011 by Grumpy CatHi, have you been able to fix the error message with TomTom to "connect to GPS"?. I have tried your previous GPS-Support.dylib (from July 5 2010) and doesnt seem to make any changes to the program. I purchased BTStack GPS version 1.5 because it said it fixed the error. Can you please help. Thanks

Posted on Apr 22, 2011 by Massive Dog(this message was also sent via email) hello matthias,
i hope you are doing good, i have bought a btstack gps licence a couple of months ago, while i was still using a jailbroken ipodtouch 4g running on iOS 4.1 it was running perfectly and i have used it many times with TomTom. today i decided to upgrade to iOS 4.3 and tried to download the btstack app once again but the problem is i keep getting the demo version, even after a few tries of re-jailbreaking and re-installing has the btstack gps licence a shelf-life? do i have to pay for it again? my ipod touch serial number is C3XDJF2PDCP7 and the paypal email addres i use is the same as this one: pmsaquino@gmail.com i hope to hear from you soon for a possible solution to this problem!
greetings from sunny holland peter

Posted on Apr 22, 2011 by Swift OxI'm sorry the license check for BTstack GPS failed. Yesterday there was a major outage on the internet, eg. Amazon wasn't reachable to everyone everywhere and also parts of Amazon EC2 cloud infrastructure, on which big parts of Cydia run. See https://twitter.com/#!/saurik/status/61012347975770112
Please try again later/tomorrow. Sorry :/

Posted on Apr 22, 2011 by Grumpy CatHi Peter, While you were running the btstack gps with tomtom, where you getting that message to "connect to GPS" all the time? It covers the street name and renders the application useless.
