How do I know if Google Gears is installed on a computer I am using?

Occasionally you may wish to know if Google Gears is installed on a particular computer. For example, you may wish to know if Gears is installed on a computer at an internet cafe, prior to logging in with any sensitive information. Currently, there are two ways to accomplish this:

  • Visit the page http://gears.google.com/. That page will clearly tell you whether Gears is installed or not.
  • Attempt to access the Gears settings dialog, which is available from the browser's Tools menu if Gears is installed.
  • Check the computer directly:
    • Windows XP or Vista
Open Add or Remove Programs (on XP) or Programs and Features (on Vista) from the Windows Control Panel. If Google Gears is not listed, then Gears is not installed.
    • Mac OS X or Linux
In Firefox, select Tools > Extensions (Firefox 1.x) or Tools > Add-ons (Firefox 2.0+) from the menu. If Google Gears is not listed, then Gears is not installed.
    • Windows Mobile
If your particular phone supports it, you can access the list of installed programs by selecting Remove Programs from the Settings page. If Google Gears is not listed, then Gears is not installed.
