We archive wikis, from Wikipedia to tiniest wikis

There are thousands of wikis in the Internet. Everyday some of them are no longer publicly available and, due to lack of backups, lost forever. Many people download tons of media files (movies, music, books, etc) from the Internet, implementing a kind of distributed backup. Wikis, most of them under free licenses, disappear from time to time because nobody grabbed a copy of them. That is a shame that we would like to solve.

WikiTeam was founded and originally developed by emijrp, a Wikipedia veteran editor and wiki enthusiast. Many people have help sending suggestions, reporting bugs, writing documentation, providing help in the mailing list and making wiki backups. Thanks to all.

• 2012-02-27: We start to archive Wikimedia Commons. Source code and file lists available. We are doing some tests.
• 2011-12-16: Using WikiIndex semantic properties to generate a dynamic List of wikibackups with many work to do! We are recruiting, we need a lot of help!
• 2011-12-02: http://15demayo.info/wiki/ went offline in an undefined moment in the past. It was about the 2011 Spanish Revolution protests. We grabbed a copy in July. Dude, our mission is an important one.
• 2011-11-30: New backups of OpenSUSE and WikiIndex wikis sent by Hydriz are uploaded. Thanks!
• 2011-11-10: Archive Team uploads to Internet Archive one of the last image dumps published by Wikimedia Foundation. It contains 296,000 images in 77GB. What a great work.
• 2011-10-27: ScottDB wikibackups site reaches 100 archived wikis milestone. Keep up the good work!
• 2011-10-24: Ian McEwen sent us a dump of https://hampedia.org Thanks!
• 2011-10-13: More than 10 years after Wikipedia was started, the first Wikimedia projects official mirror is created. Thanks to Centro de Computação Científica e Software Livre (C3SL), at the Universidade Federal do Paraná in Brazil!!!
• 2011-10-13: ScottDB has written a NewTutorial. Enjoy!
• 2011-10-10: We open a ToDo page where you can add all your wishes for new wiki archiving tools. For bugs, remember you can use the issues section.

What can you do?

You can do a lot of things:

• Read our FAQ
• Download our scripts and software, read our Tutorial and backup your favorite wiki. Send us a copy of the backup if you want!
• Download some backups of wikis. Additionally, there are more backups at Internet Archive.
• Report a bug or request a feature
• Use the backups to research how wiki communities evolve

Licenses

This project contain a lot of material. Be careful with the licenses.

• The source code is GPL v3
• Every backup of every wiki has its own license. Visit the wiki and search for the license of texts and images. Read more in our FAQ

Note

Due to lack of space, we do not offer image dumps in Google Code. The dumps only include the texts of the wikis (usually full histories). Although you can run the script and generate your own backup which would contain all the texts and images (if you use --xml --images options).
