Featured
Updated Jun 10, 2010 by jacob%87...@gtempaccount.com

VMware View Open Client binaries are provided in the following forms:

Installing the Debian Package

You'll need rdesktop. Use apt to satisfy this runtime dependency.

$ sudo dpkg --install VMware-view-open-client_*.deb

Installing the RPM Package

You'll need rdesktop. Use yum or some other RPM package manager to satisfy this runtime dependency.

$ rpm -Uvh VMware-view-open-client-*.rpm

Installing the SLETC Add-on Package

Please consult your SLETC documentation for instructions on installing add-on packages.

Installing the OS X Disk Image

Open the .dmg file in Finder, then copy the VMware View Open Client app to your Applications folder. You will need to install Microsoft Remote Desktop Client 2 as well.

Installing the Binary Tarball

You'll need rdesktop. Choose some method of satisfying this dependency.

If you want to follow conventions, you'll want something like:

$ tar zxf VMware-view-open-client-*.tar.gz
$ sudo cp VMware-view-open-client-*/bin/* /usr/bin
$ sudo mkdir -p /usr/share/doc/VMware-view-open-client
$ sudo cp VMware-view-open-client-*/doc/* /usr/share/doc/VMware-view-open-client

Comment by littlecl...@gmail.com, Feb 4, 2009

Comment by lists.jj...@free.fr, Feb 5, 2009

Comment by brian.r...@motorola.com, Feb 5, 2009

Can this client be used to to run a VM on local device storage?

Comment by bporc...@gmail.com, Feb 18, 2009

for x64 ?

Comment by jacob%87...@gtempaccount.com, Feb 18, 2009

While we're not currently planning on doing OS X or 64-bit Linux binaries, the next release should build on both of these platforms out of the box (presuming you have X and Gtk installed for OS X).

We don't have any plans on porting this version to Windows, since there's already a Windows client.

There are build rules for building the rpms and debs instead of a .src.rpm; you can run 'make rpms' or 'make debs' to build them after configuring the source package.

As for the package repos, I'm sure there's a request open for Google Code to supply that, but at this time we don't have any plans to add that.

Thanks for your comments!

Does anyone know how to create a linux boot disc with this client so you could render a PC into a dumb terminal?

Comment by jesse.ga...@gmail.com, Feb 23, 2009

I haven't done the View client yet, but for similar tasks I've had a lot of luck with the "Slax" distro.

Comment by Joris.va...@gmail.com, Mar 1, 2009

The debian packages does not connect on a 64bit installation with ia32-libs.

error message: Invalid response from broker: Malformed XML

Comment by voku1...@gmail.com, Mar 3, 2009

I have the same error ->

Invalid response from broker: Malformed XML.

my log:

Initialzing connection to broker https://x.x.x.x:443 vmware-view| LOCALE de_DE.UTF-8 -> NULL vmware-view| Busy: Getting server configuration... vmware-view| Cancelling 0 Broker XML requests.

Comment by jacob%87...@gtempaccount.com, Mar 3, 2009

"Malformed XML" errors usually mean that you're trying to connect to a server that is not a View/VDM server. This client only works with these servers; you cannot connect to ESX, VMware Server, or MS Terminal Server.

If you are connecting to a View/VDM server and get this error, please file it as a bug/issue.

Comment by jacob%87...@gtempaccount.com, Mar 3, 2009

Yes, just use 'http://<server>' for the address.

Comment by leakys...@gmail.com, Mar 18, 2009

Anyway to eliminate the TFTP requirements by storing the VMViewConfig.default file on the CD?

Comment by daniel.b...@gmail.com, Apr 24, 2009

Are you guys aware that some time ago, I've uploaded vmware-view-open-client packages to Debian? Imho there's no need for you to produce .debs on your own anymore..

Comment by jacob%87...@gtempaccount.com, Apr 30, 2009

No, I wasn't aware of this, thanks! We very well may stop publishing them in this case.

Just want to share View Client binary re-packaged as SLAX module http://www.slax.org/modules.php?action=detail&id=3481

Comment by pshoa...@gmail.com, Jul 6, 2010

I am using the open client 4.5 beta on Fedora 12, connecting to a View 4 server. It works great with the RDP protocol to XP and Vista virtual workstations. I have not tried connecting to a Win7, but the word is that Win7 will be supported properly in the View 4.5 server.

I have a boot CD, that I created using Suse Studio that I can boot any PC with an Intel 586 or better processor and at least 256M of RAM. Does not run on AMD K-6 systems.

Comment by pshoa...@gmail.com, Jul 16, 2010

Bootable suse linux that autoloads open client 4.5 is availble at http://susestudio.com/a/cfASRU/pjs-vmware-open-view-4-small

Comment by rhjo...@gmail.com, Jul 20, 2010

I have installed openSUSE 11.2, downloaded the latest VM open client tar and rpm files. I have followed the instuctions on the following pdf. http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:GaTn5Qyhg_sJ:www.vmworld.com/servlet/JiveServlet/previewBody/3919-102-1-5034/pc_to_thin_desktop.pdf%3Bjsessionid%3DF7661C406839259A33E01ADEB69E0961+repurpose+PC&hl=en&gl=us&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESjkm8jyT0tBPZjOyXNuRO7Mv2JQpP5CT2REM4IHNI18-_91J_-vmpXLTFzY-XaG2V0PoJZE-KSPYp7PrIlIaI6KCf_EFBq2Yp3FrDmVrmmTHDFaqzsTdXhPyEAX02P1c4XwBRQ2&sig=AHIEtbTFbFVEFwfS27dme7VCazXPocjlmA

I would like to create a bootable CD that will run a motd/banner with an AUTHORIZED ACCESS ONLY msg then lastest vmware client with specific configs.

a. Our IP ADDRESS to the vmware server b. Always use SSL c. Always connect to this server at startup

Are there any instructions to help me acheive this? Can anyone provide any help, please?

Comment by burnside...@gmail.com, Apr 8, 2011

I am also trying to do the ^above. I want the View client to automatically connect to my server. But I don't know what the command line options are for vmware-view. Where is the list? The only one I know is --fullscreen.

Comment by terrible...@gmail.com, Apr 11, 2011

Try "vmware-view --help". You can see all command-line options there.

Comment by burnside...@gmail.com, Apr 13, 2011
