Installation of UrukDroid 0.7+ with EasyInstall method.

Updated Jan 12, 2012 by adrian.s...@gmail.com

Introduction

This is installation procedure for UrukDroid 1.0+ with EasyInstall method. You can also do it manually.

Some useful information

Warning

  • UrukDroid is known to work on A70S and H, A101 (8/16GB) and A43. However on A70H it may be installed only on HD.
  • Be aware that this modification requires SDE and probably some Linux knowledge.
  • By doing the steps described below you probably can't brick your Archos - but do it on your own risk.
  • Root access on your device makes it less secure for malicious software (use more head - less fingers ;) )

Known problems:

  • Sometimes WiFi can't be turned on - restart fix the problem
  • If you can't connect to WiFi, please try build in WiFi Manager utility/widget or disable WPA service
  • Some people reported unable to see device info from preferences/settings menu

Before you start:

  • Read about SDE on forum, read SDE warning on Archos page before install
  • All operations described here, are done on Linux or Android and should be done from root user (you can switch to that user in terminal by typing "su" or "sudo su" command)
  • If you don't have Linux on your PC - you can find any recent Rescue CD, Live CD or Virtual disk (VirtualBox or VMware) - distribution does not matter. If you don't know what to choose - get Rescue CD from above link.
  • This method REQUIRES 2GB+SDHC (SD) by default, or resizing/formatting internal storage.

Since UrukDroid 0.6 there is new automated install method. It puts some restriction on flexibility of installation - but it should satisfy most of users; for more experienced ones - you can do it in old (manual) way.

Installation

Location of buttons and sockets on A70

Use numbers from above picture to find corresponding buttons/sockets in text below.

Step one

Important notice: Because of performance reason it is recommended to install UrukDroid internally (on internal storage). In most cases all so called "Force Close" errors, poor performance etc. are because of slow SDCard (10x SDCard does not have to be "good" for operating system - it's a bit more complex work to find "good" SDCard). However because of easiness default "Simple" method is still external.

Assuming you have already installed SDE from Archos:

Download and extract installation files from archive UrukDroid_1.5-EasyInstall.rar. Inside you should find three files: initramfs.cpio.gz, zImage and UrukDroid-install.tgz

Flash initramfs.cpio.gz and zImage from SDE boot menu:

  • power on (2) Archos device, hold up/+ volume key (1) until you see "Archos AXXXX - Boot Menu",
  • choose with Volume +/- (1) "Recovery System"->"Developer Edition Menu"->"Flash Kernel and Initramfs",
  • connect Archos to PC (5) and copy zImage and initramfs.cpio.gz
  • press power button (2) shortly, you should see Archos flashing new kernel
  • if flashed properly, press power button (2) shortly to reboot...

Boot to SDE:

  • power on (2) Archos, hold up/+ volume key (1) until you see "Archos AXXXX - Boot Menu",
  • choose "Developer edition"

You should see "UrukDroid 1.5 Installation framework" title. Please choose simple install method. When asked to, connect Archos to PC (5) once again and copy UrukDroid-install.tgz, disconnect Archos from PC properly (umount, safely remove device etc.) and press power button (2) shortly. Now EI will check installation file and prepare it for next step.

Later, you will be also able to choose whether you want to copy /data partition. It's recommended not to - but you have this option. For advanced install method - look below.

After reboot you should see UrukDroid 1.5 boot up screen (if it happens to boot to stock OS, reboot once again and go to "Boot menu", choose "Developer edition").

You should see some progress information on bottom of the screen. For few minutes you will see installation message with progress bar. Few minutes later, after some postinstallation procedures you should see UrukDroid boot animation and shortly after Archos setup wizard.

If with first run "Archos configuration wizard" creates "Force close" errors, please reboot device (hold power button shortly for more than 1 second, this will bring "Power menu" and press power button long until "Reboot" message will appear).

Congratulations! you have just installed UrukDroid

Here you can watch video created by ArcTablet with Easy Installation of UrukDroid 0.6
It's a bit old but gives a good insight how it should look like.

Step two: optional

If you want GoogleMarket (and required component to make it work) it's recomended to use (more up to date) ArcTools from AppStore.

You can also install UrukDroid package (thus you will have no WiFi location enabled) - UrukDroid-GoogleMarket_1.0.tbz2. (files inside this package are base on kenyu73 work). If you copied your old /data, you cannot have installed any other version of Market. If you apply this update, on previously installed market/vending etc. - it won't work. This packaged is tested with fresh install of Uruk - where it works. Download archive and put it in UrukUpdate directory located on /data partition (so path is /data/UrukUpdate/). You should do it directly from internet browser on Archos Tablet, file manager like Astro or terminal - you shouldn't do it over USB. Installation process will start automatically and silently, file will disappear from that folder after it's done. To run Market, restart is required when you'll be ready.

Advanced EasyInstall

Since UrukDroid 0.7 you are able to choose, during install process, method called "Advanced". This option will give you possibility to:

  • choose partition sizes (from defined list of choices) when installing to SDCard or formatting Internal storage,
  • you are also able to choose Internal installation method with "resize" option. This method will try to reduce size of your current internal storage (visible on stock OS under /mnt/storage) and create additional filesystems. You cannot choose filesystem sizes here (it will use default/simple one 512MB for rootfs and 1GB for datafs) and YOU MUST assure enough free space on shrinked filesystem. So MAKE SURE your /mnt/storage has AT LEAST 1.7GB free space - preferably more - otherwise this method will fail. This condition is not checked during install process.

Installation of additional package

There are few additional UrukDroid packages you can install, this are usually files with extension ".tbz2".

Additional files: UrukDroid?-1.0-kernel.tbz2

What is this for?

Comment by project member adrian.s...@gmail.com, Jun 24, 2011

It's package with UrukDroid? 1.0 Kernel/initramfs - with this package you can restore them to original versions - if you used (for example) OC kernel or self cooked one.

Hi Team,

I just Installed UrukDroid? Twice on my A101IT..twice! First time I used a 8Gb class 4 SD Card and result was a nightmare... slow as hell.. then I tried with the 16Gb Class 6 card from my digital camera... and it is awesome! the speed is as minimum equal to the original in archos AOS.. and I got all the extras! I´m just thinking now on getting a 16gb class 10 (is expensive but should be really fast) and see what happen..

Hope this helps.. regards!

Installed UrukDroid? 1.5 last night and after following your instructions it fired up like a dream. Installed update as well. You must make sure that all the files you load onto your tablet are in the root folder. Not on the SD card or in a folder on the tablet. My SD card is a Samsung 8GB micro SDHC class 6.

Comment by farra...@gmail.com, Nov 4, 2011

Well, I tried 'advanced install', I created a 512MB root partition and a 2GB data partition on a 16GB mSD card, the installer formated them ok, but when I get to "Transfer now installation files over USB and press power button" there are no partitions to copy to. In linux ( debian 6 x64 ) I can only see :

ARCHOS A101it device (/dev/sdf), a 13GB partition representing what is left of the mSD card after creating the root and data partitions by UrukDroid? installer and

ARCHOS A101it device (/dev/sdg), with no media detected.

Obviously I can't copy to the second device, neither the root or data partitions of the first device are visible and, if i copy the UrukDroid?-install.tgz file to the 13GB 'third' partition, the installer can't see it.

It seems that, for some reason, the UrukDroid? installer won't mount the appropriate partition where the UrukDroid?-install.tgz is suppose to go to.

Can anyone help, please ?

Comment by farra...@gmail.com, Nov 4, 2011

Hmmm ... i manually created rootfs, datafs and storagefs partitons, but I think the installer corrupts the partition table.

I copy the installer tgz to the storagefs partiton, sync, test it and safe unmount, continue the installation process on the tablet, but it fails because the file is corrupted and, lo and behold, when I mount the storagefs partition again on the pc, it IS corrupted and can't be fixed.

I tried many times, with the 16GB mSD and another 16GB mSD and to no avail. The 1.5 installer is buggy or something ... ?

Comment by farra...@gmail.com, Nov 4, 2011

Even more hmmm... I tried yet a third 16GB mSD and the same, but then I tried with a 4GB mSD and it worked.

What's up with that ? Problems with >8GB cards ?

Comment by project member adrian.s...@gmail.com, Nov 4, 2011

I have Uruk on 16GB sdcard - but it was long time ago I've installed it on it. My test card is 4GB only... from what you described >8GB limit is quite possible scenario. Please post an issue - the I'll ask for more data :)

Comment by farra...@gmail.com, Nov 4, 2011

Well, I am fiddling with UrukDroid? right now trying to make a ZTE MF110 3G dongle to work. Actually, this is the only reason I installed UrukDroid?.

I might give it a try again on a 16GB card and take a look at what exactly goes on ...

Comment by anupam...@gmail.com, Nov 15, 2011

Sir, Can I boot into archos default android after installing Uruk. I mean dual boot system.

Comment by Matthias...@gmail.com, Nov 19, 2011

Yes, by entering the recovery menu.

Comment by guillaum...@gmail.com, Nov 20, 2011

You should say that all the documents are lost when you install it. And my tablet (A70IT) is now bugged...

Comment by karsten....@gmail.com, Jan 3, 2012

installed 1.5 twice... and its always the same, the system is now slow as hell..... it sucks.... have to try tomorrow to fix that or even go back to stock rom....

Comment by project member adrian.s...@gmail.com, Jan 3, 2012

It's probably slow, because you've installed it on slow SDcard - change it or install internal.

Comment by marly_ro...@hotmail.com, Jan 3, 2012

I've got a problem, when i finished the installation and the Urukdroid beginscreen came up, in the white line below there was an error: "Boot ERROR, failed to mount rootfs"

What should i do now??

Comment by karsten....@gmail.com, Jan 6, 2012

installed it now to internal... 1.6, but now it seems stuck in bootscreen, keeps on rebooting all the time... is it maybe, because when it starts, there appears a second line (white) where it says 1.5 rootfs init..... can i change that somehow?

Comment by jordan.r...@gmail.com, Apr 18, 2012

After installing, Setup Wizard started infinite loop, ending with launch error. After canceling and rebooting, works well now. Tablet type is A101IT(Prestigio release), g8

Comment by jordan.r...@gmail.com, Apr 18, 2012

btw failed installing on SD 16GB (10).

Comment by 755someo...@gmail.com, Apr 25, 2012

Ummm, question (again): I don't have a SD card, so what other way is there to install UD? If I format my A101IT, will it work?
