FileManager
Survey on the file manager icon.
Screen shot
DetailsLet's give an id to every icon:
The first icon on the left is the 0.3.7 version of the file-manager. The other five icons are possible candidates for the file-manager icon in the v0.4 I prefer the one with the mangnifying glass But this page is here to show you other icons so you can tell me if there is something I should change or if you prefer an other icon. You can reply here if google allow you, or comment on the gnome-look content page ( http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Ultimate+Gnome?content=75000 ). |

I think the current icon for the file manager is nice and original, no need to change it imho.
hello! i appreciate very much your work, it definitively made my work better
i reply to your "poll" about the alternatives :-)
0) - doesnt seem to be intuitive (it is very nice the "hard-disk-clusters" look, but not for all the people)
1) - too much "windowish", isn't it?
2) - i would see that more for something like "new folder" (add a folder, it seems to say)
3) - very nice and original! THE BEST! it could be done in two versions:
the 1st as it is, for the file manager
the 2nd with only the the "radar" icon for the system default file search tool
4) - i hate kde, and that's too kde-ish! :-) and if not, it is more likely suitable for something about file-management tools, or file-management options
5) - it seems to say: "update the folder/filesystem view", but very nice
i hope this helps
thanks a lot again!
I agree with the guy above me in almost everything. However, even #3 being the most original, it doesn't look very good in small sizes. That's why I like the #2 more. The magnifying glass may look too "windowish", but it's so very nice, even in small sizes.
Voted for #2, the magnifying glass!
I pretty much think that the magnifying glass one is the most intuitive, but I certainly like the radar thing. I'd go for the latter, however, since intuitivity is essencial in an icon theme. BTW, great work!
First thing thank you all for sharing your opinion. I've added an id/name to every icon to avoid problems.
So this is what I think:
0) The old file manager is something original and iike it, but maybe it is not too intuitive and as "sucius" said intuitivity is really important in an icon theme.
1)the magnifying glass looks a bit windowish it's true, but I think that it represent well the idea of exploring a file system.
2)yes the plus seem to say "add a folder".. not very good
3)the sonar repesent well a file manager icon, it's new/original ,but it's a good idea that I've already use to represent the word "search" in the theme.
4) the gear looks like the kde logo, it's true and it seems to say "manage the folder" or "folder administration". Again, not really good
5)it says "refresh the folder", maybe nice but not too intuictive.
And last but not least only the "old file manager", the "magnifying glass icon" and the "plus" looks good at 16*16 size.
I've choose the icon number 1)
For first, I have to say that your work is not the finest I have ever seen. Too many icons are not present and many of the others are a bit froufrou and non-sensed (ex. filemanager squared icon).
However you're on the right way, but I have some suggestions for the future versions (don't increase the version number too fast guy!!! ;P )....
1) a new file manager icon;
2) a little more colors please (you never use red);
3) distro icon changed on the Gnome bar (not only Ubuntu ones);
4) new icons that admit to understand the kind of an archive (ex. tar.gz should have a different icon from tar.bz2 and .zip ones);
5) have you ever think to a version of Ultimate Gnome inspired to FreeBSD look?? It could be fine..... ;P
beppe you're my best support on this project :)
1) The file manager has changed as you can see
2) I use red for pdf and a lot of warning s things
3) the theme if you have red is a distro indipendent theme so there are no logo in it
4) changing the icon for tar.gz is one thing to do. I'll do it
5) no
