Support for the OpenMicroBlogging specification would allow for Twitter users to follow users of other microblogging services. |

Sure, someday, after it sees some adoption.

It would be nice to see Twitter open the field like that. |

Alex, that is GREAT news! I'm excited to hear it! If you have some ideas of what sort of adoption metrics we have to hit, let me know. 10% of the Twitter user base? 100%? Implementation of the OMB standard by another major site like Jaiku or Pownce? Let me know -- I'm into making this work. |

Changing this to "Accepted" just so it doesn't jump out at me when I'm scanning for new issues. It's going to be some time before work on this begins, though.

Alex, thank you for seeing this as a feature that should be seriously considered and implemented. Not wanting to speak for anyone else, but I would think Evan and others in the OMB community would be more than welcome to lend a hand if needed.. |

I really think this would be a great thing for Twitter. Break down the silos and promote social networking. Seriously, if Twitter gets on board with this, that will be the final thing that will get everyone on board with it. |

This would be absolutely great for twitter to add. Please add it and let us all help in sharing the load. :) |

This would put Twitter SO Far ahead of the other MicroBlogs and they'd all likely have to follow or suffer from complaints... |

We've considered this request, and we feel that OpenMicroBlogging doesn't map cleanly onto the services and methods that the Twitter API provides, particularly as we expand our set of methods in the next release. Should the specification evolve to better reflect what we're trying to achieve, we'll reconsider supporting it. We do recognize that there have been a number of people who've "starred" this issue, and I want to be clear that we aren't 100% closed to supporting this at some point in the future. We'd also be happy to support anyone who wants to provide an OpenMicroBlogging gateway with unrestricted API access, as we've done for XMPP and other protocol gateways and proxies.

This is a very disheartening statement. It leads me to believe that Twitter is still attempting to achieve a lock-in in order to maintain market share, despite all the benefits Open Standards would have. The rest is just vague PR talk. |

Alex, we're working on a next release of the OMB spec. If you can send me (evan@identi.ca) your notes on what you'd like to see in OMB, I'll be happy to include them. Since the point of the protocol is to create a federated network of Twitter-like sites, it's clear that we'd love to hear your suggestions. |

I urge Twitter to work with the OpenMicroBlogging folks to improve the spec and include all of the features that Twitter needs, and then join the OpenMicroBlogging network. Open standards are the best hope for making microblogging truly pervasive the way that e-mail is. |

Please reconsider adding omb support in twitter. Open standards will win out in the end so get in early and help shape the future. Identi.ca/njg234908 |

I see Twitter just placed a cap on API requests for scaling reasons: http://blog.socialtoo.com/2009/01/21/twitter-limits-potential-app-growth-how-this-hurts-our-users/ This scaling problem could easily be solved by implementing OMB, thus allowing some of the burden to be shifted to other providers. If you want everyone to get into microblogging, you CANNOT be the only provider. It's simply not possible - nobody can scale that large. But many people working together can. |

Should be supported. We are looking at making a FLOWS based way to interface between OMB and twitter API, however... http://code.google.com/p/flows-dev/ |
