Updates to Facebook via twitter app aren't updating status

Posted on May 13, 2010 by Swift Lion

What's the problem you're seeing?

My updates show on Facebook, but they show as some odd thing... my Facebook Status is no longer updated by the tweet.

What was the request you made (if applicable)?

I sent a tweet.

************ WARNING: Obscure your authentication tokens (HTTP Basic Auth, sessions, etc.) ************

What was the full HTTP response, with headers (if applicable)

Noticing other users experiencing this. Follow twitter to see.

We made a change to use a newer Facebook API to add content to the stream that no longer updates status. We think it provides a better experience based on what Facebook is asking developers to do.

You can always manage the settings Twitter has with Facebook through your Edit Applications tab. http://www.facebook.com/editapps.php?ref=mb

Did you see all the complaints about this on FB? You're just going to make a change without letting people know?

This behavior is NOT what people want. Further, lots of people are no longer able to install the app (http://www.facebook.com/topic.php? topic=20244&post=142255&uid=2231777543#post142255)... great job ruining everything.

Wow. This blows me away that so many users were using this a certain way and then you just change it thinking that FB and we (the users) would like it better.

Isn't the whole point to update our Status Updates vis Twitter? Why would I want to post to my own Wall via Twitter? It MY Profile, I want to update MY Status.

It also looks like no one monitors your FB App page because there are many seeing an answer or reason for the change with no warning.

It was very functional the way it was prior to the change. It isn't very functional now, or very useful. I have never wanted to post to my own Wall before and I don't want to start now and I don't want to do it through Twitter.

Unfortunate.

I have switched to the "Smart Twitter" app on FB, as apparently other users have also.

My Twitter feed stopped posting on my Facebook page on Wednesday eve 051210 and hasn't been back since. I checked all the post and App settings and nothing else has changed on my end. There's alot of folks running around in circles looking for something on their end to fix and somebody pulls the strings behind the scene without letting folks know whats really happening..? I would say someone's got some negative karma coming there way...

PLEASE change this back!

This is NOT what users want!

Posted on May 14, 2010 by Happy Bear

I did go to change my application settings and all it does is give me the option to publish to my wall. It said nothing about my status.

Posted on May 14, 2010 by Happy Kangaroo

I also switched to Smart Twitter. Simple and updates my Status on FB. It's REALLY what us USERS want.

Posted on May 15, 2010 by Happy Panda

about to switch to smart twitter... i would rather use an official app made by twitter... but not when it goes from good to suck.... i'll start using it when its good again.

Posted on May 15, 2010 by Quick Rhino

DO NOT LIKE. I don't like FB's text updates, but I DO like Twitter. I'm used to texting my update to Twitter and it hitting both sites. This is dumb and I can't believe you did this.

Others say on FB to switch to the Smart Twitter app. Going to go check that out. Thanks for nothing, Twitter.

Everone would have felt differently if there was some notice rather than just changing it and STILL not telling your users of the change. I design software (Product Manager) and this would never fly where I work.

NOT what users want. Totally limits facebook mobile. Ugh. Very disappointing.

Posted on May 15, 2010 by Happy Rhino

Come on!! I keep tweeting heavily from my mobile phone. And the API took care of updating my FB status. Now I am stuck with having to update tweeter AND FB status each time. I want the old API BACK! NOW!

And please respect the User's choice. Have look at the stream of comments on the tweeter FB page.. Without us, you guys would be nowhere!

I too will be switching to Smart Twitter. You guys really are clueless sometimes.

Posted on May 15, 2010 by Swift Kangaroo

not a problem. just remove the official twitter app and add Smart Twitter instead.

Posted on May 15, 2010 by Happy Kangaroo

I get the feeling Twiiter doesn't care what app we use. They did what they did despite the users feelings. This update was done under the hood without warning to anyone - nothing on their blog, their FB app page, or even here. They could have at least left checkboxes in the app to give us a choice: 1) Wall Post or 2) Status Update. Everyone would have been happy.

Posted on May 15, 2010 by Happy Kangaroo

@tokofu: Adding a custom action link ("@foobar on Twitter") to your Facebook API call causes two issues that affect your users:

1) Their statuses are no longer updated. 2) Multiple posts from Twitter's application ID -- even across multiple users -- are collapsed down into one post when viewers use the News Feed to view their friends' activity.

These side effects are probably not what you want. I'd recommend taking another look at including the custom action link.

So for MONTHS I've been trying and trying to log into facebook's Twitter app with no success and I was very frustrated... So I was really excited that when I tried this morning it magically worked! It accepted my user id! I posted a tweet and it asked me if I gave permission to "change my status"!... I clicked yes! ... And then I find that it's only allowing wall posts? Then I glance through here to discover this change was ON PURPOSE!? What the crap, Twitter!? I wanted this for STATUS CHANGE purposes! Not WALL posting. CHANGE IT BACK!!!!!!!!!! It's VERY obvious your users are unhappy about it.

Posted on May 15, 2010 by Grumpy Horse

What everyone else is saying. We likerd the old behaviour and want to continue updating statuses. Removing the option to update status is bad enough, but doing it without notification to users adds insult to injury. For a company whose entire purpose is communication, twitter sure sucks at communicating with its users.

Posted on May 16, 2010 by Happy Giraffe

I've yet to hear from anybody who appreciates the change to "updating the wall" instead of "updating the status". However, if you are convinced that people want this, why not make it an option that can be selected by a setting, and see how many users choose it?

Posted on May 16, 2010 by Quick Kangaroo

What everyone else is saying; this sucks guys. Sounds to me like FB told you to nix the status update function 'or else', and you caved. Should have held your ground, they don't need anymore bad press.

Getting kind of sick of this whole "well only 20% of our users used it, so we're just going to force them to do it the new way because we have them addicted to our service like it's crack, so they'll whine and complain, but they ultimately won't do a damn thing about it, so in the end we win" mentality that Zuckerberg is forcing onto everyone.

Twitter, please give us the choice in the app settings. Like others have said, let US tell you how we want to use the service. Think of it this way, some of us may have more friends on FB than followers on Twitter, or have an overlap. As a result, we may choose to ignore Twitter, and update our FB status only as a time saver. I mean why double your effort for less gain? If users do this, Twitter loses out on potential trending topics and the like, which could reduce your relevance by a degree, while giving FB more of an upper hand.

Forget this, I switched to Smart Twitter.

Posted on May 16, 2010 by Grumpy Cat

By including the comment that this is "what Facebook is asking developers to do" in your reply, are you implying that Facebook is discouraging or possibly removing the option to use third party applications to remotely update facebook statuses? That would be infuriating.

From a usability standpoint, this makes no sense. It is definitely a step backwards for Twitter, as most people rely more on Facebook than Twitter to keep their networks updated. Not everyone will have the time to update both, and I don't know a single person who likes the idea of having real-time twitter updates on facebook as mere wall posts while their old and outdated facebook statuse remain unchanged.

I hope you will reconsider this design change in your application.

Posted on May 16, 2010 by Massive Elephant

Beyond belief that such a fundamental change to the way that Twitter works in conjunction with FB would be made without a very, very upfront notification to the user community.

Posted on May 16, 2010 by Massive Panda

Guys, not a forum. Create a topic on some Off-Topic section of some forum or using an hashtag on Twitter. The mere fact of starring an issue will 'upvote' the issue, I believe.

Posted on May 17, 2010 by Happy Ox

Smart Twitter only works if you're twitter account is public - mine is protected - not prepared to make it public...too many weirdos, freaks & stalkers out there to contend with - so now what?

Posted on May 17, 2010 by Swift Bird

I'm experiencing this bug also. How can we get this fixed so that twitter updates work again? My FB status hasn't changed in a week despite lots of tweets. Is there an ETA for fixing this?

Posted on May 17, 2010 by Happy Bear

Can't believe FB status isn't updated anymore. Adios Twitter!

Posted on May 17, 2010 by Grumpy Hippo

The new changes are absolutely terrible. I wish there were an alternative to Facebook.

Posted on May 17, 2010 by Grumpy Kangaroo

This is totally awful. Not only is the Twitter feed now telling everyone what my alias is, but my Facebook status is no longer at all useful. Please change this back!

Posted on May 17, 2010 by Swift Hippo

I'm unsure if the change is bad (I've not had chance to look yet), but making an amendment without informing anyone is rather poor. I had no idea this had happened until a friend told me on Sunday evening. I had wondered why, when using FB mobile, I was being notified of people commenting on wall posts, but simply put this down to someone else posting on my wall. To confuse the matter further FB mobile doesn't allow me to view comments on my wall posts via the notification section.

If the change does get more people using the app', do let us all know. I, for one, will be surprised.

Posted on May 17, 2010 by Happy Lion

This needs to be fixed. Twitters mission is to make small timely status messages available to the largest audience possible... Why change that now?!?! This seems to be change for the sake of change.

Posted on May 17, 2010 by Massive Panda

You're spamming the bug. Hence people starring the bug and voting it up will unstar it and it's importance will diminish. Hence going against your intention. Have fun, I'm unstarring it.

Posted on May 17, 2010 by Swift Giraffe

For me, there are several bad decisions here:

  1. No notification to the user base. Unacceptable.

  2. The idea of a 'better user experience.' Shouldn't that be up to the users themselves to decide?

  3. No option to allow tweets to update our status. Instead of just quietly removing the feature, give users the option to have tweets update our FB status or merely our walls. Add functionality, don't remove it. That a Twitter or Facebook representative stated to look at the application options when the one option we all want doesn't exist is laughable.

Posted on May 17, 2010 by Happy Panda

All Twitter feeds to Facebook all seem to be broken. I've used 3 or 4 feed apps (including Smart Twitter) and although each might've worked for a little while they all stop working after a few hours. This is obviously a most unpopular move and it indicates to me that we the users don't count for much in their grand scheme of things. Seems like neither Facebook or Twitter is responding to questions or comments and that's disturbing...

Posted on May 17, 2010 by Swift Giraffe

This sucks, what a dumb idea....

Posted on May 17, 2010 by Swift Dog

I'm a software dev manager, and introducing a feature without telling the users about it is called "the road to ruin". A couple of people said "missed your posts" and I just thought they weren't being very observant.

But you've changed the fundamental behaviour of the software - you've changed the very reason I was using it. It just beggars belief.

I'm beyond astonished. It's like buying a car only to find the manufacturer's decided it would be better if it just sat on our driveway.

Posted on May 17, 2010 by Quick Camel

Wondered why my status stopped updating, now I know. This was a really bad move. FB should be ashamed of themselves for asking and Twitter should be ashamed of themselves for complying. A tweet is indeed a status change, not a wall post. Change this back!

Posted on May 17, 2010 by Quick Camel

Wow, and just noticed that this is considered a "Closed" defect? Really. Twitter, you have no plans to "fix" this?

Posted on May 17, 2010 by Swift Lion

Hey! How is this closed without being resolved? I opened this issue, can't there be any explanation?

Posted on May 18, 2010 by Grumpy Dog

One of the ONLY reasons I even used Twitter was because I was able to post my status to both Twitter and FB. I liked the Twitter interface better on the Blackberry (FB is clunky).

I don't have the impetus to post a status on Twitter AND one on FB. LAME. I don't know that I will even BOTHER with Twitter, any more.

Issue 1634 has been merged into this issue.

Posted on May 18, 2010 by Helpful Wombat

Hey everyone, The first thing I want to say is thank you for your valuable comments but this isn't the place to raise them. I'm not trying to remove the importance of your comments but need to clarify this site is for issues raised by developers on the use of the API. The Twitter staff who monitor this issue tracker maintain the API that the Twitter for Facebook app uses, not the app itself, so all we can do is pass on your concerns.

The correct place for all of this feedback is the Twitter for Facebook page on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=2231777543

Posted on May 18, 2010 by Helpful Wombat

@tim.neumark the reason for closing this issue is that it isn't part of the Twitter-API and therefore not something the API team can change or influence.

Posted on Sep 6, 2010 by Happy Dog

I am NOT happy about this! I have used Twitter to update several Social Networks at once so I wouldn't have to type the same thing 3 diff times! Not even Selective Tweets (Facebook app)will work! It hasn't been updating for about 48 hours! So if I will no longer be able to update my Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace all at once I will NO LONGER BE USING Twitter and or TweetDeck!

all these posts are from a long time ago, I'm having the problem now. My tweets were posting fine up until about 2 weeks ago, I have tried to follow all suggestions I have found, but they still are not posting to FB

What you can try (which worked for me) is to disconnect your FB & twitter for about a minute, then reconnect them again. Should work fine after that. =)
