Next Action, Personal Edition
Next Action is a Getting Things Done todo-list tracking tool. It's a personal database for your action items and todo lists that you use through your web browser.
Features Include:
- Fast and snappy.
- Easy to use.
- Open source.
- Works even if your network connection is offline, slow, or has hiccups.
Getting started:
To run the fully enabled version of Next Action, Personal Edition, please first install the Google Gears browser extension. If you haven't installed Google Gears, you'll still be able to demo or test-drive Next Action, Personal Edition, but only in demo mode. In demo mode, you won't be able to save any data that you've created.
After you have Gears installed, or just want to try it out, please visit the following link...
In Next Action, Personal Edition, any data you create is stored locally on your computer. That is, your records are not saved on a distant server, but are instead kept in a fast Google Gears database on your own computer.
Be sure to setup a bookmark to the above link so you can get back to Next Action and your todo lists conveniently.
Software required:
Supported web browsers : Firefox 2.0+, IE 7+.
Google Gears : the Google Gears browser extension is required to fully enable Next Action.
How To I Upgrade?
The latest version of Next Action, based on a revamped architecture around Google Gears, is unfortunately, incompatible with previous 'File->Save Page As' versions of Next Action.
Because of the new architecture, future upgrades of Next Action, however, will feature automated migration.

I've been using the new version of Nextaction with no problem until today when I received an error code. I deleted all my data but continue to get an error code telling me the template is corrupt. How do I delete Nextaction from my computer and begin again?
What version are you running? And, what error code are you seeing? To run the latest version, based on Google Gears, just visit the above Start Next Action, Personal Edition link.
I'm not sure, this happened a couple of weeks ago. It just showed a whole bunch of code where the action page was supposed to be. It was totally corrupt. I had to delete every hint of NextAction off of my computer and restart. Is there a way to save my projects and actions offline so if this happens again I can import the saved version instead of having to start from scratch? If I want to export my data to another computer, how would I accomplish that?
Hopefully the latest versions based on Google Gears works for you better.
To make backups or from one machine to another, you can copy the Google Gears RDBMS sqlite file, which is described in: http://code.google.com/apis/gears/api_database.html#directories
For example, following those docs, I would make backups of...
\Users\steve.yen\AppData?\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\iiac8sda.default\Google Gears for Firefox\trimpath.com\http_80\100-user-nextaction#database
Or, if you wish to run your own "Junction/Next Action" server (open source!), such as in an intranet, you can download it from http://code.google.com/p/trimpath/downloads/list as trimpath-junction-VERSION.tar.gz
When will this data be tied into my google account, so that it can follow me around?
Steve - It happened again. I added an action and on my Dashboard page there was not data and just this code:
[ERROR: template:
TypeError?: action.getProject() has no properties;
(Object?,Object?,"edit")@http://trimpath.com/demos/static_nextaction.html#home/dashboard:515 (-8,"WAITING","WAITING",null)@http://trimpath.com/javascripts/trimpath/template.js?1187051865:58 (Object?,Object?,Object?)@http://trimpath.com/javascripts/trimpath/template.js?1187051865:80 (Object?)@http://trimpath.com/javascripts/trimpath/template.js?1187051865:149 ("/app/views/home/dashboard",Object?,"en")@http://trimpath.com/javascripts/trimpath/junctionClient.js?1187051865:193 ("/app/views/home/dashboard")@http://trimpath.com/javascripts/trimpath/junction.js?1187051865:1928 ("home/dashboard")@http://trimpath.com/javascripts/trimpath/junction.js?1187051865:1885 ("dashboard")@http://trimpath.com/javascripts/trimpath/junction.js?1187051865:1906 ("get","home","dashboard",null,Object?)@http://trimpath.com/javascripts/trimpath/junction.js?1187051865:3406 ("home","dashboard",null,null,Object?)@http://trimpath.com/javascripts/trimpath/junctionClient.js?1187051865:1229 ("home","dashboard",null,null)@http://trimpath.com/javascripts/trimpath/junctionClient.js?1187051865:1188 onclick(MouseEvent?)@http://trimpath.com/demos/static_nextaction.html#home/dashboard:1 @:0 ;good stuff!
WOW! This tool is great! I have now looked at over 40 Todo-List Web Tools, and NextAction is one of the best. The reason is, it is able to really manage Todo-Lists (it is done by contexts and subcontexts). Other tools which can also do this are usually paid services. I would like to use Next Action productive because of these features: - Subtasks/Subfolders - free - Due-Date - repetition - and one of the best one's: Offline usage!
These few points are missing in my opinion, which I need before I can use it productive: - time capturing: Tasks need X hours <-> I have done 30 minutes of it - statistics: How many tasks are in which context done/open, graph over the tasks (date -> done/open tasks) - show done tasks in list for specified time (it is nice to see that you also have done sth.) - possibility to edit old tasks (reopen/delete) - priority for tasks - order tasks depending on both: priority and due-date (and mark them by these criteria (color/size)) - customize interface (show only the colums you are interested in) - automatic synchronization with other pc's (eg. upload json dump every minute and download it, if the file on the server is newer) - better implementation of recurring tasks: automatically update due-date - week overview in addition to month and day
For some reason, http://trimpath.com/demos/static_nextaction.html#home/dashboard is not linking straight to the dashboard.
Other than that, I really like this is as a tool for GTD - it's nice and lean - I don't necessarily agree that it needs all the enhancements mentioned, as that will just take away from the leanness of it. GTD at its core doesn't really even talk about priority numbers or even labels. Having time and dates stored would of course be useful, but I like the ability to create next actions FAST and then mark them completed just as fast.
I think having additional day selections such as this Mon, this Tue, this Wed etc. would help - or a little more usable way of selecting a particular calendar date when creating a next action.
What the other posted above seems to be missing is that this app is not intended to be a "Microsoft OutHouse?" or Project type solution. I say keep it lean and mean, as GTD is meant to be, but consider a few usability changes as I mentioned.
I do agree that automatically backing up the JSON data would be very helpful. Since JSON data is a little unwieldy with other apps, I'd like to see a CSV export option since that is a little more flexible.
While I realize the Google Gears db probably improves performance and also offers more functionality via SQLite, I still think it would be worthwhile to offer a TiddlyWiki? style version as was done with the now-ancient 0.19 or whatever version. Having all the data in one file to be put onto a flash drive certainly has its advantages.
One very small nice-to-have - that the same mouseovers work on the Completed section as is done on the Actions section when mousing over an Action name.
Just a tiny little irksome inconsistency. :-)
I've tested around 5-6 commercial & freeware PIM/To-Do/GTD programs and haven't been happy with any of them. This is the first app I have come across that I felt comfortable with from the start. Simple yet has all the functionality i need. Lovely app!
Hello Steve
Are SPA and SPADE dead? If not, where can I see a sample SPA and/or SPADE? I'm looking forward to trying Next Action - but want to see what Google Gears is first. :o)
This option will be added in next version.
I've been using this for few weeks. I like it but I can't get it to run if I can't connect to the internet. That is, if I have a browser running with, say http://trimpath.com/demos/static_nextaction.html#project/index displayed, and I put the computer to sleep and wake it up someplace without a network connection, I can keep running because it still can access my local data. However, if I totally shut down the browser, then start it without internet access, and go to http://trimpath.com/demos/static_nextaction.html#project/index it won't work.
How can I make this truly work offiline?
Great program!!! Excellent idea! Off-line version, pleaaaaas!!!!
TiddlyWiki? "style" version please!!!!!!
Actually, I am using version 0.96 offline just fine. Just saved from IE, File->Save As ...
On my computer I use Firefox to access it, without problem.
I'm unable to use version 0.96 offline on Leopard, Firefox 2.0.0.12. If I try to save the page locally, it looks fine when I first open the local html file, but when I try to click on any of the links, the whole page looks really messed up (parts of the page that are supposed to be on top move to the bottom of the page). It looks fine when I use the trimpath.com version of the page, but that won't work when I'm offline.
Anyone else seeing this problem??
cindabin - I have the same if I save it with firefox. Save it with IE, then it works fine with firefox as well. For me anyway ...
