sympy - issue #2796

Package the latest version of SymPy for the major distributions

Posted on Oct 26, 2011 by Swift Kangaroo

Most distributions have old versions of SymPy packaged (or none at all, eg. openSUSE). These should be updated to the latest version of SymPy (0.7.1 as of now). Ideally, the scripts used to generate these packages should also be saved and uploaded somewhere, so it will be easier to update them to newer versions. I'm marking this for Code-In, but consider that each major distro could be a separate task.

This most likely means deleting the bundled mpmath/ and making SymPy play nice with the distro-provided version.

And please create sections at the bottom of https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/New-Release detailing exactly what you did, and things to look out for, so that it's very easy to do it again for each new release.

Let's create a task for each major distribution, and some additional "dummy" tasks for any other distribution that we may have forgotten. And don't forget to include fink and macports :)

Are there distribution automation tasks we can add about this? I suspect some of the high school students are better at this than some of us are.

Let's emulate that tasks from last year. Those were mostly successful. This year, we just released, so I don't even think the major ones (like Ubuntu or Sage) have been updated.
