This is related to issue 60. In the past, Google has made changes that reverted the settings for existing projects so that it would display the project members' email addresses instead of their Google account name. I was told to change the setting to resolve it, so I did.

Some time between October 11 and October 15, Google made the same change, and my subsequent code and comment commits to a project I work on show my email address even though I never changed the setting to allow that. Please understand that not all of us want our personal email address posted publicly in plain text where it can be picked up by spam bots.

With that in mind, I'm requesting Google to change the user name posted for my commits/comments on this project from my email address to my user name:

Please also remove my full email address from the project feed

I understand that the change is related to trying to improve issue 60, which is a good thing, but adding a third option to the username display options has ended up changing the default to show the whole email address, making things worse! I have now changed my setting, but in the meantime a number of checkins and issue comments in the project display the full address (but not in the svn log)

@raynebc: nice understatement: "not all of us want our personal email address posted"... I'd say, "almost no-one". I gave up trusting googlecode on issue 60 a long time ago, and had to create a special google account for use with it.

Also, there is at least one site now scraping googlecode and contacting me from it:
www.masterbranch.com, they build a programmer profile and then advertise to you to join their jobs service... Until nicknames are allowed, it will always be easy to guess the gmail adress from the username.

(apologies for the repeated paragraph in previous post)

This latest update should not have changed your settings or the display of your username - it should only have tweaked how we show the settings page.

jwall: I think I see one defect, though. For gmail users who have selected the username option, the user profile page is instead showing the full email address. See https://code.google.com/u/f.j.casson for an example.

However the username display setting was changed. Check out my updates on the project I work on:
https://code.google.com/p/editor-on-fire/updates/list

They were all posting as my username, then inexplicably change to my email address, and then back to my username after I changed the setting back within the past day or so. I don't believe I have any means of changing it so that my email address is not displayed completely, so even if nothing else is done to prevent this problem in the future, I would still like to have my project updates changed to show my username instead.

raynebc: The update should not have changed the setting for you. I'll look into why that may have happened. Please let us know if it happens again.

jacobly: yeah that is definitely a defect. I should be able to tackle it next week.

Will do. Will somebody be able to change the instances where the project updates page lists my email address so that it just lists my username instead?

@3, @4, @5: The display setting has changed for ALL users who previously selected the username only option, it is not limited to raynebc:

See: https://code.google.com/p/gkw/updates/list

If you can, please remove my email address from the above project updates page too.

One further issue: If I make a change to a file through the web editor, the username displayed in the SVN log is my full email address, even though I have now selected the username option. If I check in through a normal SVN client, it puts my username only.

See https://code.google.com/p/gkw/source/detail?spec=svn2302&r=2302
(Future readers, I will probably shortly hide this by editing the SVN log)

Likely this is related to the same display problem mentioned in comment 3.

My email address is still exposed on those affected updates for my code project. Could somebody correct this?

It's too bad Google staff aren't as concerned about user privacy as its users are.

The issue is actually worse than the issue summary: Even once a user has reset their settings correctly, the full email address is still displayed in the user profile and in the log for edits made from the web editor. I wonder if filing this as a new issue would get more attention, also it must be a very easy thing to fix that.

Bump. Either remove my email address from the project details or say outright that you aren't going to bother. Doing neither is lazy.

@11, is that still occuring? Since you probably edited SVN log. If this is the case a new issue would be best.

@12:
I believe your problem should be solved at the end of this month.

@13: Yes, it still occurs and I have to edit the SVN log every time. I think it is a side effect of the more obvious point that you can always check directly: That my full email address appears on my user profile page (linked from my username above), when the option I have selected in the user options is to show f.j.casson only (as appears in comments such as here). Its not just me, it's every user with that setting!

The "updates/list" URL that is accessed when clicking the "Activity" link under project information now accesses a page that says "The page you asked for does not exist."

Please tell me this is not Google's solution to the problem, the loss of the updates web page makes monitoring for user tickets/comments much less convenient. I'd rather not have to start caring about RSS feeds just to replace that lost capability.

It's more of a side-effect of the removal of updates.

So, what, is the only way to regain the functionality of the "updates" page for a Google Code project to subscribe to ALL of the RSS feeds for a project? That's hardly a step forward for progress.

If Google is going to remove all of the activity summary features, how about making one single master RSS feed to take its place? At least then we could still efficiently monitor changes to a project, without having to view multiple feeds. What's the point in making Google Code less user-friendly?

I'd appreciate the one master feed idea in comment 19.

Regardless, thank you for your efforts.
