Introduction

Description of the chapters text format that Subler can import.

Details

Subler can import chapter in two different formats.

The first one is the one used by mp4v2's mp4chaps utility It's a simple format, it consist in the timestamp followed by the chapter title. Example:

00:00:00.000 Prologue
00:00:19.987 Opening
00:01:50.160 Episode Blablabla
00:21:54.530 Ending
00:23:24.453 Preview

The second one is the ogg text format used by some utilities. Example:

CHAPTER01=00:00:00.000
CHAPTER01NAME=Living Weapon
CHAPTER02=00:05:00.750
CHAPTER02NAME=A Better World
CHAPTER03=00:09:31.937
CHAPTER03NAME=Aboard Serenity (Main Titles)
CHAPTER04=00:14:49.088
CHAPTER04NAME=Going for a Ride

The file needs to be a .txt text file.

Does Subler expect a specific suffix for MP4Chaps and, if so, what it it? What is the proper suffix for ogg chapters?

Comment by project member damiog, Nov 18, 2009

It expects .txt , it may change in the future.

I've tried both formats but every time I drag the .txt file to Subler it crashes (0.98 on Snow Leopard).

Comment by project member damiog, Jun 29, 2010

It doesn't here. So open a new issue an add a crash log. Or nothing will happen.

Comment by joran....@gmail.com, Jun 29, 2010

Issue was caused by dragging the chapter file to a file which already has a chapter track (with one chapter). After deleting the chapter track first it worked fine.

how can I change a wrong metadata that has been saved to a movie?

Wouldn't it be possible to include an option to Subler, which automatically adds chapters to a movie any x minutes?

Comment by zork...@gmail.com, Sep 28, 2010

I would find it handy if there was a means to export a chapter list as a text file: that way, I could quickly modify the chapter names without having to copy the times into a file manually. A small thing, I know, but when you're slogging through whole seasons worth of episodes, it's a bit tedious. _

where do you create the files that is compatible with subler. In text edit? Do you just add time code with the name and then save it as an rtf? then add it to subler?

Comment by project member damiog, Nov 16, 2010

TextEdit? is enough, but you have to save the file as a text (text only) file.

Could you please add a feature to extract the chapter markers? I sometimes need to copy them between files. And doing by hand is a real pain in the ... Thanks in advance!

I second joran's (?) comment from Dec 9. I love this small app, incredibly useful, but chapter extraction would be amazing,

Any idea why the chapter titles don't show up on my iPhone 3GS? I encode my movies using handbreak, then add the chapter titles using Subler. They show on my Apple TV, but my iPhone just shows "Chapter 1", "Chapter 2".. and so on.

Comment by casperde...@gmail.com, Dec 26, 2010

Would be a sweet addition if you could simple copy the text from the Barnes & Nobles website.

Comment by yveskna...@gmail.com, May 1, 2011

Is there any website where you can download chapter files? Kinda like opensubtitles for subtitle files...

Comment by musicnf...@gmail.com, Dec 27, 2011

tagchimp.com has the titles of chapters. Anyway to query tag chimp, get the the chapter names, and have an option to import?

Comment by amicae...@gmail.com, Mar 21, 2012

Just a note regarding the import of chapter text files. The space after the timecode in example 1, is just a space, not a tab. A tab makes the 1st word of every chapter disappear.
