GETTING STARTED WITH STREAMBABY

Other useful reference pages: remote_button_summary

  • If you don't already have Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.5 or later installed you need to do that first. You can download latest JRE from here:
  • Download latest streambaby installation zip file from downloads page
  • Unpack to a fresh folder somewhere
  • Edit streambaby.ini file and at minimum you must define at least 1 top level folder under which your video files are located (video files can be in any folder structure you like). For first entry use dir.1=xxx for second entry dir.2=xxx etc. Lines starting with a # character are comment lines. Example:
    • # Top level video shares
    • dir.1=c:\home\dvd
    • dir.2=f:\videos
  • NOTE: Make sure you have at least one dir.1=xxx line in the configuration file, and make sure it does not start with #. Lines starting with # are ignored
  • Now you are ready to run the application. For windows double click on streambaby.bat or for Mac/Unix systems run streambaby script. For windows you will see a console window similar to the one shown below. You should leave this console window running.
  • NOTE: For windows if double clicking on streambaby.bat does not work it most likely means you don't have java.exe in your windows path, so you have 2 choices:
    • Add full path to folder containing java.exe to windows PATH environment variable. As an example for Vista 64 this would be something like: C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin
    • To edit environment variables in Windows go to Control Panel-System-Advanced-Environment Variables and then look for Path entry under System Variables. Then add a semicolon followed by full path to java.exe on your system as in the example given above (will vary depending on your particular OS).
    • Alternative to the above is to simply edit the streambaby.bat file and replace java with the full path to java.exe, for example: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe"

  • On one of your Series 3 Tivos go to Tivo Central - Music, Photos & Showcases and scroll down all the way to close to the bottom and look for Stream, Baby, Stream item:
  • Once you select or right arrow that item you are presented with Top Level screen:
  • Select or right arrow one of the top level entries and then you can navigate the folder structure and select a video of interest:
  • Select or right arrow one of the video entries to enter Play Screen:
  • For Quality selection if this video can be played back natively there will be a "Same" choice which means play back video as is without transcoding it. If the bit rate is too high for streaming in real time or better you can choose a lower quality rate which will transcode to mpeg2 and stream at that bit rate.
  • Here is an example of pause during playback:

Consult the remote_button_summary wiki page for details about all the remote control functions in selection screen and playback screen modes.

This is fantastic. One question/request though, can streambaby be run as a windows service so you dont have to be logged in to the computer serving the videos? Thanks for the great software!!

Comment by jsmiley...@gmail.com, Aug 18, 2010

Well. If I'd just READ a little I could have answered my own question. Never mind about the service. :-p

AWESSSOMMMME... please keep updating. Have a Tivo 3-series.. Since cinavia screwed me (cannot stream downloaded TV shows to my ps3 anymore!) I have been looking for another solution... works great. This is a GREAT solution to cinavia if you have TiVo?. Thanks so much for all your hard work!

Comment by jayscomp...@gmail.com, Aug 16, 2011

This is such a great program! Thanks for all your hard work! The tivo community really appreciates it! I am not one to leave comments, but this deserves it. Thank you very much!

Comment by Graham.S...@gmail.com, Sep 26, 2011

I get an error 0xffff on every video I try. Streambaby seemed to install and run OK, and I find the videos on my Tivo, but I get the roor when I hit PLAY. W7 x64, latest Java etc.

Comment by scottri...@gmail.com, Dec 29, 2011

I see the 0xfffff error ever so often when trying to stream. Restarting the tivo under the help menu should clear it up.

Comment by curtlew...@gmail.com, Feb 28, 2012

Tivo Premiere with system 20.2-01-2-746 no longer shows streambaby in the showcase. I've downloaded the latest zip file and added cc.background.transparency=0 to the ini file, but that didn't help. I've also rebooted the tivo and the server. Telnetting to the ip:7290 confirms it's up and listening.

I works on my premiere with the latest update

I finally found a great tutorial to fix the no java error. A great youtube explanation in a matter of 2 minutes. you need to copy java from (mine) C:\Program Files(x86)and paste in the other Program folder C:\Program Files then open that pasted java folder to bin and copy address C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin, go to my computer, properties, advanced, click variables tab add new in top box type PATH next second box paste the java path, then a new again type CLASSPATH paste path again hit okay, you must remember to hit okay all all caps like written.
