SquareJelly
In 2001 my current company was building the ancestor to this current open source project, a web site cms package, at the time called "Site Architect".
Before its public release, the current software name was discovered to already be in use, and the search for a new name ensued.
Scott Auch, a graphics illustrator involved with the project, created a list of words that described what we were trying to achieve.
- An easy way to organize web site content
- A friendly interface that would be inviting for non-technical users
- A name that could be branded to support multiple versions of the product.
- Most importantly, a name that we could secure a .com domain name for.
From the word list "Square" was chosen because it was a descriptive metaphor for organization and structure.
"Jelly" was ultimately chosen because it was not only fun, but provided a graphical as well as a narrative angle for future product branding. Products could be branded by flavors and the logo could be colorized to match without altering the actual representation of the logo.
Together, the two terms became SquareJelly and hence the memorable name was born.
