Maybe the title/summary is a little ...misleading, however, I'd like to see
Specto close itself a few seconds after I launch/visit the final updated watch.

Sometimes I miss the pop-out feature, have to open the window, click the
updated watch, then completely forget about specto, until i return to the
desktop, then close it.

Maybe I'm anal about my open windows, maybe theres something I'm not
thinking about that would make this "feature" annoying, or even pointless.

Just figured it's worth a shot.

why not just adjust the popup notification duration?
Comment 2 by ashleymg, Jul 17, 2008
I wasn't clear: when I said "Sometimes I miss the pop-out feature"... I meant, you
know, being away from my computer.

If I was, and you meant that it can stay around for a long time, all I can adjust it
to is twenty seconds. Is there some other setting I'm missing?

However, even if there is, I like that the pop-up only shows for a short period of
time, most of the time, I'll ignore it temporarily knowing in the back of my head to
check my mail account later.

hmm basically you're asking for specto to become a separate daemon + gui to control
it, so that when you close it it doesn't "really" close?* I doubt this can be done
easily with the limited manpower.

*unless you mean "close to a tray icon", for which there is an option in the preferences

In the 0.2.2 release?

I have three options:

* Pop toasts from the tray icno when a watch is updated.
* Display the notification in the window list
* Always show the icon in the notification area.
Comment 5 by nekohayo, Jul 23, 2008
the last two of the 3 options you just mentionned, perhaps?
Comment 6 by ashleymg, Jul 24, 2008
Well, since neither of these sounded like it's what I needed, I never changed them.
When I tried to, the second option (Display the notification window in the window
list) won't let me un-check it.

I can change everything else.

I don't want the system tray to hide, unless I have an update.

I'm assuming that if I un-check the second option the notification window that
appears when I miss the pop-out and click the system tray icon (that I want to keep)
will vanish/self-close/make the window go away (not close the application) after it
launches the last updated watch.

To be honest, I don't understand this feature request anymore (I'm confused and I
have a hard time imagining the use case for this); if there's a way to represent it
visually (maybe with a video screencast or something), or by doing proof of concept
code to show how it makes specto better/easier to use, I'd be interested in seeing that.
Comment 8 by ashleymg, Aug 28, 2008
I know its a tough one to describe. I don't know how to create any of what you
requested (sorry) so I'll try to explain it one more time (even though you didn't ask).

There's the little pop-out the specto uses from the system tray to alert me whenever
my watches are updated.

Occasionally, I miss this pop-out. I know I can update the length/duration of the
pop-out, but thats not the point (sometimes I want to ignore my inbox).

So, when I'm done ignoring specto (and my inbox) I open up the notifications window,
click on the updated watch, and click "Jump to".

My problem is that the notifications window stays there. *I* don't need it anymore.
It's served its purpose. I think it should go away after I launch the last updated watch.

Not the application, the notification window. It should disappear from the desktop,
and wait patiently in the system tray.

The use case, is, well, me.

Sometimes I ignore my inbox because I want to. When I want to access it, I can, and
very easily: just two clicks (thanks to specto).

I could take screenshots of what current elements I'm talking about, in case I'm
poorly communicating what parts of the current application I'm talking about.

Other than that, I think you have a wonderful application.

Comment 9 by nekohayo, Aug 28, 2008
Well in that case, I presume you should simply have the option "Always show the icon
in the notification area" activated, and when you have opened the last watch from the
notifier window, click on the notification icon to minimize to it?

I do.

I think it would be nice to close automatically.

I know its a small request, with an out-of-balance code requirement to implement, but
think it would be a thoughtful touch.

Marking this as an enhancement, and low priority because I will most likely not be
implementing this myself for the time being. This means that if you (or someone else)
has the knowledge to implement it cleanly without making the logic even crazier than
it is in the current code ;) and provides a patch, I could look at it. But I can't
promise, as it seems to be a bit exotic and could introduce complexity+bugs.

Pity it took this long to get this far. Still, you left it open, which I appreciate.

I won't be capable of implementing it, but maybe someone down the road will.

Thank You.
