Panos I. Papadopoulos is the inventor of SPAWK. After working for many years on huge databases under UNIFY DataServer RDBMS, he developed the "chtawk" package (2006) in order to incorporate awk programming in SQL processing. He also developed the "chtawkrpt" compiler (2007) which is a chtawk based report processor.
The idea of mixing awk with standard SQL have been proved very successfull, so Panos developed the SPAWK project (2009) in order to achieve the awk/SQL interaction for MySQL databases. The reason to do so is the wide acceptance of MySQL, which is a very fast and very reliable open source DBMS.
