I notice that none of the developers seem to have responded to bug reports since Nov '08. Does this project need a new maintainer?

Soundflower is developed as time and resources permit. Additional contributors are always welcome.

Just installed it. Haven't used it yet. Judging from the Macworld review and the documentation I've looked at so far, it only passes audio from one program to another, and then you may be able to save the sound to a file in that second program. My own preference would be to record the sound directly to a wav or mp3 file directly. For example, if I want to record procedural instructions delivered by voice by a colleague at a remote office over Skype, it would be convenient to write that recording directly to a sound file for later transcription or note taking.

Would this extension allow me to control HDMI output volume to a monitor's speakers from the Apple device (MB Pro) directly?
