If your title screen says "pump" on it and you cannot find any songs, go into the Options menu, go to Select Game, and change it to dance.Thank you for learning StepMania. IntroductionIf you are already familiar with sm-ssc, barely anything has changed. If you are familiar with another version of StepMania (3.9, "3.95", 4.0 CVS/alpha/beta), you should know that no themes or NoteSkins will work, though most songs will. SongsStepMania 5 did come with two example songs, but you probably downloaded it so you could install your own Song installation seems to trip up people who aren't used to it, so here is how a proper installed song (in this case Royal Flush from FlightMix 4) looks: StepMania 5/

(song files go here)An alternative explanation can be found in this StepMania forums thread. Additionally, if the song came in a .smzip package, you may place it in StepMania 5's Packages folder: StepMania 5/ Packages/ SomeSong.smzip Custom Song LocationsIt is possible to put songs in any folder, not just the default location. If this is done, however, Preferences.ini has to be edited to point to the new location. As an example, if a user named Bob wanted his songs inside his StepManiaStuff/Songs folder inside his home directory, the line in question would be as follows: AdditionalSongFolders=/home/Bob/StepManiaStuff/Songs The location of Preferences.ini depends on the operating system. ThemesOn Windows, this directory is created by the installer. On Mac and Linux, this folder doesn't exist due to most of the data being in GameData.smzip. You probably won't have a Themes directory yet. StepMania 5/ Themes/ SampleTheme/ BGAnimations/ ... Sounds/ metrics.ini ThemeInfo.ini Porting ThemesAt this point, StepMania 5 has far surpassed the point of compatibility with any other version. portKit-SM4 has been removed as of StepMania 5 alpha 1. NoteSkinsJust like the Themes, the NoteSkins are stored in GameData.smzip, meaning you'll have to make this folder as well (except on Windows). StepMania 5/

(noteskin files)"dance" is used as an example gametype. StepMania supports various other gametypes, and comes with dance, pump, and kb7. |
On ubuntu i put the songs on /home/User/.sm-ssc/Songs but sm-ssc cant detect the songs, there is another directory for the songs? :S
On Ubuntu, the sm-ssc folder is located here: ~/.config/sm-ssc. You can create a Songs folder in this directory, then create a symbolic link to it in a more easily accessible place:
mkdir ~/.config/sm-ssc/Songs mkdir ~/Stepmania ln -s ~/.config/sm-ssc/Songs ~/Stepmania/Songs
Now you just need to drop all of your songs into the Stepmania/Songs directory in your Home folder.
I'm using OS X Lion and just got the newest version (I came from Stepmania 3.9) and I'm so confused on where to put my Songs folder? It doesn't let me paste anything or make new folders. Please what do I do? bethanigruber@gmail.com
To OS X Lion users: Download "The Unarchiver" from the App Store (FREE app, BEST for unzipping different file formats - very highly rated). Go to your Stepmania 5 image and find the Gamedata.smzip file. Unzip it using The Unarchiver and it should ask you where to extract the files since you can't do it within the image itself. Choose Desktop and then there will be a Game Data folder on your desktop. Move your sm-ssc application to that folder, create a folder in the folder named "Songs" and then you can add your songs the normal way. _
I really was unhopeful when I first downloaded SM5 and couldn't figure out how to add songs for mac, especially since Lion made previous incarnations of SM unplayable (which sucks 'cause some of us had a lot of PowerPC applications). But anyway, it's pretty simple to get it to work.
For OS X Lion Users: You could have just created a new folder, I named mines sm-ssc and in the folder drag all the content from the SM5 .dmg image into your newly created folder, and just make a Songs folder inside your newly created folder, or you can Copy and paste your old songs folder into the new folder as well
Well, I'm Lion user. I have done all the steps above by myself, then read this forum so I know I did it right. But everytime I try open Stepmania it crashes and it says: 00:00.123: Reading 'Data/Defaults.ini' failed: No such file or directory 00:00.123: Reading 'Save/Preferences.ini' failed: No such file or directory 00:00.123: Reading 'Save/Preferences.ini' failed: No such file or directory 00:00.123: Reading 'Data/Static.ini' failed: No such file or directory 00:00.207: Loading window: macosx 00:00.208: Model: MacBook7?,1 (2/2) 00:00.208: Clock speed 2.40 GHz 00:00.208: Mac OS X 10.7.1 00:00.208: Memory: 2.00 GB 00:00.208: Reading 'Data/Static.ini' failed: No such file or directory
And that's true. There are no files mentioned in the log. Where am I supposed to find find them?
How would you unzip the smzip using the unarchiver?
Alright, so I'm running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.1, and each time I do what was instructed, I can go to the song list, but all that shows up is "Roulette", regardless of how many songs I have--they just don't show up. I've tried this many, many times, and I cannot fix this. Does anyone know what to do?
Having the same problem as the guy above me. My songs don't show up, and all I get is Roulette, even if the opening screen reads (in my case) 25 songs, 10 courses. I can even edit them if I want to, just not play them.
Hey I first saw Roulette only as well. However, I went to the options and noticed that "game" was set to pump. Try setting it to dance. When I did that, all of my songs showed up. Hope this helps others ^^
Well guys I officially give up. I thought the final release they'd fix the issue, but they didn't. I really wish I could just play 3.9 but that doesn't work on Lion anymore. I can't copy my songs over because the window for Stepmania doesn't let me drag and drop them. If anyone has any actual help (like whether or not " The unarchiver" actually works, please respond with actual instructions. If not, it's been a good run, Stepmania. So long.
smzip is just a zip. You can just rename it to .zip and extract it.
Why is it so confusing to add songs
For those of you who are having double with Lion, here's what I did: When you open the disk image, make sure you create a new folder somewhere on your desktop. Name it Stepmania, or whatever you like. Then, copy everything from the disk image, which should be a folder called Docs, a folder called Packages, and the actual application itself, into the new folder you created. Now, you no longer have any need for the disk image, so you can close it. Next, make a folder for songs called Songs in the same area you have all the other folders. Then follow the instructions above for putting your songs in the folder to play. If you followed it correctly, it should work. You need to make a subfolder in the Songs folder for whatever songs you are adding, and then within the subfolder you add the actual songs themselves. I hope this helps!
Thank you so much Jnthan@gmail! You're a lifesaver. I've been trying to figure out how to do it for at least an hour and now it's all working. Just creating a new folder and dragging the old files is so much easier!
Yeah, don't try to run SM5 off of the .dmg directly. It won't work for various reasons. You'll have to copy it somewhere else and make a Songs folder.
