Conversion Chart

This chart, adapted from the one at FiFoBooks.com, uses the latest stable version of Sigil, 0.1.9.

This guide shows you how to get from whatever format your original book is in to EPUB.

My Book is in --- Format What to Do
Plain Text (TXT) Follow these steps
HTML Follow these steps
Rich Text (RTF) Use the rtf2epub tool to convert to EPUB, then use Sigil to proofread the result
Microsoft Word (DOC) Open your book in Microsoft Word, use the File -> Save As command from the menubar to save it in filtered HTML format, by choosing the "Web Page, Filtered" type, and then follow these steps (if your version of Word does not offer "Web Page, Filtered" as an option, you can install this free plugin from Microsoft)
Microsoft Word 2007 (DOCX) Use either docx2epub from the epub-tools project to convert to EPUB, then use Sigil to proofread the result; or, open your book in Microsoft Word, use the File -> Save As command from the menubar to save it in filtered HTML format, by choosing the "Web Page, Filtered" type, and then follow these steps
Open Document (ODF) Open your book with Open Office Writer, use the File -> Save As command to save in HTML format, then follow these steps
Portable Document (PDF) Open your book with Adobe Acrobat and use the File -> Save As command to convert your book to HTML format, then follow these steps. If you don't have Acrobat, you can use the xpdf tools to convert your .pdf file to text, via the pdftotext command, then follow follow these steps (and if your book has images, remember to use the pdfimages command to extract them). Another non-Acrobat option is the pdftohtml tool, which produces an HTML file, which can in turn be converted to EPUB.

Another useful tool for converting from almost any ebook format to almost any other ebook format (including epub) is Calibre available at http://calibre-ebook.com/
