A brief summary of what you need to know /do to use rocketremote

Requirements - general

essential - ensure your frontend has the "telnet" interface enabled. You will need to set it in the options for each frontend that you wish to control.

see : http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-11.html#ss11.6

in short, you need to check 'Enable Netword Remote Control Interface' in

utilities/setup | setup | general .

Make a note of the "network remote control port" setting if you change it from the default.

To run the "desktop" or "apollo" (currently win/mac only) version then you need to have installed the adobe "apollo" runtime (in alpha release at the time of writing).

it may currently be downloaded here :

http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/apollo/

To run the "flash" or "swf" version, you need only have the adobe flash player 9 plugin installed, or alternatively one of the "standalone" flash 9 players.

http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html

installation

the "desktop" or "apollo" version installation is acheived by simply double clicking the "air" install file and following the standard apollo prompts.

the "flash" or "swf" version can be run in a browser with the flash plugin installed as is

(or in one of the flash standalone players). However, it will probably fail to connect to the frontend unless you specifically add it as a "trusted" file in the flash player settings.

To do so, open the swf file in browser/standaloneplayer, right click the display and choose "settings", then "advanced".

Your browser should open at the "Flash Player : Settings manager" page,

choose the "Global security settings panel" link on the left hand side.

click the "edit locations" combo and then the "add location" option.

Browse to or enter the path to the rocketremote.swf file you are running, and confirm.

Close the browser window, your swf file should now be trusted to connect to your frontend(s).

General usage

The first time you use rocket remote, it will open at the "frontend preferences page", where you may enter at least one frontend's details.

For each frontend you wish to add, enter a nickname (this will be displayed in the main interfaces frontend choice combo control), and either the hostname or the ip address of the frontend machine. Both are required, and each may not be duplicated in another frontend setting.

If you are running the machine's "telnet" interface on a non-standard port then you may also set the port number to suit.

The "default frontend" checkbox enables you to set a frontend as the default frontend to connect to on application startup.

Click "add" or "save" to save the initial frontend setting.

To add further frontends or edit existing ones then click the "prefs" button on the main interface.

To edit an existing frontend then select it's nickname in the combo control at the top of the frontends preferences tab, alter the details displayed and click "save".

To add an additional frontend, select an existing one, alter the details displayed and click "add".

To delete a frontend, select it and click "delete". You may not delete the the last remaining frontend, but may edit it to effectively create a new one.

Having added a frontend, you will be returned to the main interface, which should be largely self-explanatory (?).

A couple of points are worth mentioning, however.

The red/green dot at the upper left hand corner of the interface represents the connection status of the connection to the currently selected frontend. Green is Good, Red is Bad.

The program generally attempts to connect to the default frontend on startup, or to the newly selected frontend when you change the selection.

However, if the connection fails, and you have (or have just added) a single frontend, you may need to click the "connect" button by the frontend selection combo to force a reconnect.

Key/Command mapping

IF desired, you may remap the commands sent by each button.

click the "prefs" button, then select the "keys" tab. Select an item from the datagrid and the string it sends to the frontend will be displayed in the text edit box below.

Edit it to suit, and press "save" to save the setting.

Please note that key command settings are currently global and cannot yet be set on a per frontend basis. Also, you'll probably want to have some idea what you are doing :). see http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Telnet_socket
