How do I use Ringdroid? I don't even know where to start!

See UsingRingdroid.

Why does Ringdroid only show some of my songs and not all of them?

Ringdroid looks for files on your SD card. Transfer files to your SD card and then disconnect the USB cable so Ringdroid can find them.

Ringdroid only supports MP3, WAV, AAC, MP4, 3GPP, and AMR files. The filenames must have the correct extension or Ringdroid will not recognize them! For example, make sure that an MP3 file ends in ".mp3".

Note for Windows Media users! By default, Windows Media Player uses WMA as its audio file format. Android supports WMA for playback, but Ringdroid currently doesn't support it for editing, so such files will not show up in the Ringdroid menu. Depending on your facility with Windows, converting WMA files may or may not be easy to do. Consider using Audacity for this task, or ask a friend who uses iTunes to help you out.

If you would like Ringdroid to support an additional file format, tell us which one by filling out our survey.

If you have a file that appears to be in the correct format but Ringdroid has trouble with it, please email the file to ringdroid-support@google.com and we will try to fix the problem in the next version.

I still don't see all of my files!

Try opening the built-in Music app. Do you see all of your music there? If not, then the problem isn't with Ringdroid - Android doesn't see your music at all.

To force Android to see new music files, you need to unmount and mount your SD Card. You can do this by attaching your phone to your computer, or with apps like MountUSB.

How do I delete ringtones I created?

Just open Ringdroid, long-press on the name of a sound and choose Delete from the pop-up menu.

What information is sent if I opt-in to sending anonymous data to Ringdroid.com?

After you've saved at least two ringtones using Ringdroid, you get a prompt that asks you:

Okay to send anonymous data about the ringtones and other sounds you create to Ringdroid.com so we can collect statistics?

If you click "OK to send", Ringdroid will upload the following information every time you save a ringtone:

  1. Information about the song (title, artist, album, year, filename)
  2. The Android version number of your phone (like 2.2)
  3. The Ringdroid version
  4. A randomly-generated unique ID to prevent abuse and duplicates

No information about your user name, phone number, or anything personal like that is sent!

If you don't want this information sent, just click "Never" when prompted.

I clicked "OK to send", but I don't want Ringdroid collecting that information anymore!

You can reset Ringdroid to its default settings, which will clear your preferences and your unique ID. That will stop Ringdroid from sending any more data. To reset Ringdroid:

  • Open Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> Ringdroid
  • Click "Clear Data"

I assigned a ringtone to a contact, but it didn't work!

This was a bug in older versions. Upgrade to Ringdroid 2.4 or higher.

No matter where I move the sliders, it always plays the song from the beginning.

This is a bug in the HTC Hero / Droid Eris. Ringdroid 2.3 tries to fix this problem. If you're still experiencing it, reboot your phone and uninstall and reinstall Ringdroid. If that still doesn't fix it, post more information about what kind of phone you have to this list.

I got an error while saving

  1. Is your handset connected to your computer via USB? Try disconnecting it first.
  2. Is your selection very short? Android has problems with very short sound files; try making it at least one second long.
  3. Is there a problem with your SD card? Try removing it and inserting it again.
  4. If all else fails, reboot your handset (turn it off and then on).
  5. If the problem persists, email ringdroid-support@google.com and tell us as much information as possible about the error you're getting.

It sounds distorted or funny!

Is the original music distorted? Try opening the original music with the "Music" application. If the original music is distorted too, then the problem is with Android or with the T-mobile G1. Try converting your sound to a different format with a program like Audacity for your PC.

Is the original fine, but the saved ringtone is distorted? Please email the file to ringdroid-support@google.com and we will try to fix the problem in the next version.

I can't hear the alarm!

On Android there is a separate volume control for alarms. Go to the Alarm Clock application, and edit the alarm sound for one of your alarms. Click on one of the alarm sounds to hear a preview. If you don't hear anything, or if it's too quiet, press your volume controls while it's playing. You'll see a pop-up window that shows the alarm volume.

Alternatively, download one of the free "Volume" control applications from the Market, many of which will let you set the volume for Music, Ringtones, and Alarms independently.

I have a feature request

Please fill out our survey.

I found a bug!

Please check the other questions, above. If it isn't covered, please email your bug report to ringdroid-support@google.com. Please include as much information as possible, otherwise there's no way we can help you. If you have a problem with just one particular sound file, please email us the file. We don't mind big attachments, so don't be afraid to send us a big file. Please, just one file, though.

I tried to make the “final fantasy seven victory fanfare゛ by clipping the full song into a 3 sec clhp from the start BUT during playback after saving the clip has the start and end removed. This app will be uninstalled and ill just use my pc.

Comment by studiop...@gmail.com, Sep 9, 2010

Why can I only use 15 seconds of a song no matter how long I set it up to save? It ends up squooshing the audio together so that it skips throughout what I saved to get to the end of it in 15 seconds.

Comment by Junbug...@gmail.com, Oct 22, 2010

I downloaded ringdroid to my tmobile G2, and it made doubles of the ringtones that I created. Everything else worked fine except for that, is there something I'm doing wrong?

Comment by docper...@gmail.com, Oct 27, 2010

I want to install the app but it bothers me it requires access to my personal information including my contacts! I can't think of any good reason such an app would need this information.

Comment by jung.jon...@gmail.com, Nov 21, 2010

When I make ringtone using ringdroid, two ringtones are created in the ringtone selections window. However there is only one ringtone in /sdcard/media/ringtone/ directory. It looks like BUG.

Nexus one 2.2.1 Is saving whole song, not the part I cut out as ringtone.

Comment by sandel...@gmail.com, Dec 2, 2010

When i save my ringtones, it saves the whole song but only plays a portion of it, so the file stays huge, and i can't send it in a text message.

Ringdroid keeps saving my ringtones and notifications twice how do I fix it or how do I download a newer version PLEASE HELP

Comment by cfwilli...@gmail.com, Dec 27, 2010

Used RingDroid? to create ringtones and assigned as default. Problem is they are distorted (originals are fine) AND, I cannot change the default ringtone !! I pick a different ringtone (under Sounds) and it doesn't take. I cannot find anyway to change my ringtone! I have the latest version and even tried uninstalling the program with no effect. Now what? there has to be a way to fix the issue.

Comment by cfwilli...@gmail.com, Dec 27, 2010

Oh, and I am using the Dell Streak running Froyo (2.2)

Comment by aaaa...@gmail.com, Dec 28, 2010

Rindroid creates a ghost copy of my created ringtones. Let's say I have "Blur - Song 2.mp3" and load it into Ringdroid. I clip it and save it and it comes up as "Blur Ringtone.mp3". However, I edit it and save it to "Blur - Song 2.mp3" as it was originally titled. This is grabbed from my "music" folder and the saved ringtone is put into media/audio/ringtones. This means that I am not overwriting the original file, but I wish to keep it named this way so that I have an easy way of selecting ringtones.

When searching for the file in Ringdroid, I get the original file (in the music folder) and two other files. One is an 'unknown' file and the other is a 'Ringdroid' file.

When selecting ringtones for contacts, I get two options. "Blur - Song 2" and "BlurSong2?", with the text formatted so that there are no spaces. This is what confuses me. If I delete "BlurSong2?", both end up getting deleted which just deletes the ringtone entirely.

I found a workaround, although annoying. I copy the media/audio/ringtones to my computer and then delete the original off the phone. I go into settings > applications > ringdroid and clear data. Restart the phone, and transfer the folder on my computer back into my directory on the SD card. This seems to be the only fix for now.

Comment by espi...@gmail.com, Jan 13, 2011

When I create a notification it only saves .1 second of it and the volume is low, even though the original mp3 version is great quality.

Comment by ctstcrnc...@gmail.com, Jan 17, 2011

Keeps doubling my files on the ringtone and notification list. On the ringdroid list it shows 2 files one unknown and one ringdroid. I tried to delete one which ended up deleting both. On my SD card it only shows one file. What's going on?

Comment by LilGo...@gmail.com, Feb 9, 2011

I have the Droid X version 2.2 and every time I download ringdroid it gives me the 2.3 version. This prevents me from choosing ringtones for specific contacts. Why can't I upgrade to version 2.4???

Comment by ss71...@gmail.com, Feb 14, 2011

im using the new lg optimus V on virgin mobile. ringdroid is a great app but ive been reading posts the same as my problem. i see 2 ringtones under android ringtones. what ive done to mine is make the volumes louder with audacity.and overwrite what i dl'd with ringdroid. still, under android ringtones, there r 2, the originally made and my modified even though i overwrote it. ive gone into ringdroid itself and deleted it and its finally gone then but this shouldnt be right? if so, its kind of a pain no offense because if u modify them delete the original it comes up unknown until u delete it from ringdroid...any ideas?

Comment by matthewc...@gmail.com, Feb 22, 2011

The app says that it cannot edit mp4 files. What file types can it edit and how would I convert my mp4 files to this file type?

Comment by petershe...@gmail.com, Mar 11, 2011

Phone app says that it does not edit mp4 yet the above says that this should not be an issue?

Comment by adamrabb...@gmail.com, Mar 23, 2011

Will not allow me to edit 3gpp files I record. Ringdroid recognizes that they are there, but when I pull them up to edit, it shows there is 0 seconds recorded (even when there is sound recorded) and it wont even play the file. What the hell is going on??? It worked just fine the other day, I was messing around and made one. Now this...

I've unistalled and installed it about half a dozen times...no luck. Help please!

Comment by brianami...@gmail.com, Jun 22, 2011

I used the app and the music worked fine when I was changing the times, but when I tried to set the music as a ringtone or notification al I heard were beeping sounds, it played for 2 seconds, or played for 5 and sounded distorted. I tried turning off the phone like I was told, but when I turned it back on it was all the same. This was for multiple songs. So now what?

I am trying to download Ringdroid 2.5 from Market to my Motorola Atrix. The download is paused by itself a few seconds after it starts. I tryed many time to cancel download and to start again with no success. The app is stoked, and prevent other app to be downloaded. Can someone help me to solve this without reseting my cell?

Comment by heshaots...@gmail.com, Sep 19, 2011

There are two issues I found on this application.

First: 1.Launch the Ringdroid application. 2.Choose an audio and will get into edit status. 3.Input a bigger number in the "End" text view, the number can be double of the first number. 4.Tip Menu key and choose "Save" button. 5.Choose "Save" button on the "Save As" dialog. 6.A “Force close” Dialog will appear.

Second: 1.Launch the Ringdroid application. 2.Plug in USB line. 3.Open Status Menu and choose "USB connected". 4.Click "Mount" to connect USB. 5.Tap Revert key. 6.Input character in the Search view on Ringdroid. 7.A "Force close" Dialog will appear.

Is there a fix for these issues?

Comment by carc...@gmail.com, Sep 21, 2011

I don't have any issues making ringtones but after a few days all my ringtones get reset to factory Then the ringtones don't show up as even an option unless I re-save it.

Comment by nehiviki...@gmail.com, Nov 12, 2011

Same problem as Sep 21: no problem making ringtones. They just disappear. Pain to have to keep recreating. What's the point.

Comment by juliain...@gmail.com, Feb 4, 2012

How can I make Ringerdroid show up as the app I want to use to assign sounds & ringtones ?

Comment by chu...@gmail.com, Feb 16, 2012

+1 for the 4.0/ICS support

Comment by fulul...@gmail.com, Apr 3, 2012

Please do an ICS port. Can't run this on the Galaxy Nexus

Comment by darbylyn...@gmail.com, Apr 9, 2012

Add me to the list of those who talk about Ringdroid making duplicate ringtones. Both work identically, and the only difference I see is that one lists the title with spaces between the words while the other one doesn't add those spaces. If I delete one of the ringtones, the second one is deleted also.

Comment by markusgs...@gmail.com, Apr 18, 2012

It would be cool to get an update for 4.0/ICS!!!

Comment by trilo...@gmail.com, May 12, 2012

Hi,

I have looked all over the place for the answer and just can’t seem to find one that fits for me.

I have mp3’s saved to sdcard. Ringdroid only finds mp3’s from some folders. How can I tell it to where to look?

The thing is, it used to work. I don’t remember exactly how, because I haven’t used in a little while. Either I would open Ringroid and then select an mp3 to cut, or I accessed the file itself by going through My Files, etc., and selecting to edit with Ringdroid, or through Poweramp to find song to edit and selecting edit with Ringdroid. Like I said, I don’t remember exactly which it was. Probably the first.

In any case, none of those work now. Not sure what changed. Is it b/c I added some incompatible app, like MX player, or Google Music player or something?

I can access all mp3's in built-in music player, as well as in Poweramp.

I tried uninstall/reinstall. I tried reboot. I tried setting>sd card>unmount>mount.

I have a Samsung Droid Charge.

Mp3’s are located in sdcard/Music.

Thanks,
