Converting From Another Forum PackageUpload the archive to your public HTML folder on the host. Unpack it with the following command (linux): tar -xzvf filename.tgz If using Windows, winrar or 7zip can unpack the file for you. You can unpack the files locally to your harddrive and upload them to your site if you prefer. Make sure they get uploaded as ASCII and not binary!! Once unpacked, surf to http://yoursite.com/install QSF will check your system and report back on whether you have the necessary software. If it does not meet the requirements, the installer will not be able to continue. Select "Convert From Another Package" from the menu and hit continue. Directory permissions will be checked, and if any need to be adjusted, the installer screen will let you know. Choose the forum package you are converting from. You'll need the information on how to connect to the database on your old forum. This information should be available from a configuration file in the software's folders. You can also elect to remove the old forum's database information with the provided checkbox. The backup file it makes will be stored in the packages folder. You'll also need the information on how to connect to your new database as well. It may be the same as the old database, although it is recommended to use a fresh database if your provider will allow it. You will be asked for a site name and a URL. The URL should already be filled out and it is generally best to leave it as-is unless you know for sure it needs to be changed. The contact email fields need to be filled in as well so the system will know who to send important messages to. You will not be asked to provide an administrator account since it is assumed the one from your old forum is still applicable. Click "continue" and you should get a screen confirming that all went well. If not, an error will be displayed asking you to correct whatever went wrong. Use your back button to return to the install form once you have the information it needs. The number of items converted will be displayed. This may not be entirely identical to the information from your old forum since QSF handles a few aspects differently. It's also possible your users will need to recover lost passwords if the hashing methods are different. That's it! You should be set up now and ready to go! |
