How to configure windows XP to use Proxoid
Updated Aug 23, 2009 by mike.bar...@gmail.com

Installation on Windows XP

Important 1 : Be sure to have correctly configure your phone before
See this page if not.

Important 2 : Il you have a Samsung Galaxy, Install Samsung PC Suite now before continuing.

Overview

The steps will be :

  1. Download drivers
  2. Extract drivers
  3. Install drivers
  4. Configure browser
  5. Start tunnel
  6. Start proxoid
  7. Start browsing

Steps 1 to 3 are only for the first time. Next times, it will be more faster.

Note :

In the following documentation, screenshots are in french.

Step 1 : Download drivers

The real Android SDK is near 200Mb.

If you're not a developper, most of it will be unused.

So I made a subset of it that is juste 2Mb and contains adb and the windows driver.

Download it here :

for 32 bits : http://www.baroukh.com/proxoid/proxoid-adb.zip

for 64 bits : http://www.baroukh.com/proxoid/proxoid-adb64.zip

and save it on your disk.

(if you don't know witch one, try 32bits first ...)

Step 2 : Extract drivers

Right click on the file an choose "Extract all" Click Next then Next and Finish. There should be now a directory named "proxoid-adb".

Step 3 : Install drivers

Step 3.1

Plug your phone now.

Windows will work and ask you to use windows update to install drivers :

Select the third option : "Not now" and click "Next".

Step 3.2

Select second option to tell windows you will provide him the drivers. Then, click Next.

Step 3.3

Click on browse. Browse to the extracted "proxoid-adb" directory.

Select subdirefctory "usb_drivers" then "x86".

Click Next

Step 3.4

Windows is now installing the driver

Step 3.5

When installation is finish you should see something like this. Click "Finish"

Step 3.6

Windows will ask you to reboot

For me, itwas not necessary.

Do here as you want...

Step 3.7

We will now verify that all works.

Your phone should be plugged.

Browse to proxy-adb directory and execute "check.bat".

You should see something like

List of devices attached
HT848GZ40121 device

The device number can be different.

What is important is that there is something after "List of devices attached".

If yes, you make the harder.

If not, drop me a mail (mike_at_baroukh.com). I'll try to help you. If you can, provide me a screenshot.

Step 4 : Configure browser

We have to configure the proxy on your browser. If you already know how to do, go directly to step 5 after ahving configured your browser with proxy "localhost" on port "8080".

If you're using Internet Explorer

Launch your browser.

Select menu "Tools" then "Internet Options"

Go to "network" tab

Click on "Network parameters"

Check "Use a proxy server".

Enter "localhost" for server and 8080 for port.

Click Ok.

If you're using Firefox

Doc to come ...

Step 5 : Start tunnel

Go now to directory "proxy-adb" and run script "start-tunnel".

Step 6 : Start Proxoid

On your phone, run Proxoid and check "Start Proxoid".

You should see Proxoid's icon on notification bar saying that "Proxoid is running".

Step 7 : Browse

Here it is.

If I'm not wrong, you actually can browse using your phone.

Enjoy !

Hmm. When installing drivers it says. "Windows found driver software but encountered and error...driveris not intended for this platform"...

What's up?

Comment by thorbsex...@gmail.com, Jun 4, 2009

Ah here's the prob: driver sofware without a valid digital signature can't be installed on x64 based windows. Well that doesn't help me very much xD

Comment by 3tan0nl...@gmail.com, Jun 6, 2009

Hi !

I wanted to try that on my HTC magic, but, like drugs2nd and for6parkonly, I'm stuck at 3.1 step.

When I plug the phone to the computer, Windows don't ask me to install anything. It detect my android phone, and auto-install it like a mass storage device.

How can I fix this issue ?

Anyway, thanks for this app ;-)

Comment by ferran.c...@gmail.com, Jun 8, 2009

I cannot see the yellow warning (on windows xp), I try to actualize the controller, but system respond me "La ubicacion esecificada no contiene informacion acerca del hardware."

Thanks! Ferran

It works but the data connection is not reliable I had to refresh the pages a lot. Also I had to run the tunnel for the MS Explorer, otherwise it would not work. Also since the web site like yahoo expects a phone on the other end the interface was oversimplified to keep the data amount down.

Like everyone else I had a problem with forcing windows to update the driver, it thought the driver it had was better. I think I played around with G1 menus mounting and unmounting the card to make it work, can't remember now. Maybe also plugging in and out the port a few times.

Although my phone was connected to my wifi at home when I was doing this, loading of the pages was very slow almost like a dialup connection.

It seems the app could be very useful if the kinks are worked out.

Comment by dotd...@gmail.com, Jun 17, 2009

I got it to work using HTC Magic, the problem is the dialog in 3.1 doesnt show up, but find the Device Manager, and under Disk drives there should be a HTC Android phone device, I then right clicked and pressed update driver and let it search for the drivers in the directory where I have unzipped the drivers, Windows came with an error that the drivers I specified wasn't "better" than the one I used, but I then used the force method to update to the drivers I choose, after the installation of the new drivers I disconnected the phone, and then run check.bat where it showed: List of devices attached HT95PKF01663 device

After that I just followed the steps and got it working, I have had to turn on Proxy on Proxoid on the HTC before running the start-tunnel.bat

I hope this can help people with the HTC Magic. It took some time to get it working properly, also I activated the USB debugging mode and Always on in Settings->Applications->Development (Im not sure if that's part of the solution, I tried some things to get it working :) Im writing this post using my HTC Magic as a proxy :)

Comment by harryliu...@gmail.com, Jun 27, 2009

Comment by Reghen.m...@gmail.com, Jul 4, 2009

It doesn't work with my Magic, impossible to install properly the adb interface on my XP SP3, there is an error "code 10". And it's not possible to force the install by using the way of"htc android phone device".

It works for me now, but i faced the problem that the phone was always recognize as a a mass storage disk and don't ask me for the new drivers. I found this (in french) : http://www.zebulon.fr/astuces/211-desactiver-le-stockage-usb.html

(regedit KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet?\Services\UsbStor? change the value of "start" from 3 to 4, then unplug and plug the phone) Do the reverse operation once finished!

And now it works perfectly on windows xp , will test this evening on macos.

Comment by rlevy.innovation, Aug 1, 2009

Comment by maurice.calvert@gmail.com, Aug 4, 2009

Works perfectly, if you : - unplug your phone - Remove all USB devices with http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html - re-plug your phone - when prompted for the new device, install the supplied drivers - on your phone, start the proxoid application and "start proxoid"

In Geneva, Switzerland, speedtest.net gives me 228mS ping and download speed 0.17Mbps (=170 kilobits/sec, =~17 kilobytes/sec) which is pretty decent when you consider that its 3g wireless).

Great job (un boulot superbe)

Comment by avrahamk...@gmail.com, Aug 17, 2009

Interesting... I don't know much about the technicalities... I have pretty decent speed, but what seems strange to me is that I consistently have better upload speeds then download... wonder why.

Comment by pclawler, Aug 18, 2009

Bravo! Nice work around for non-root. Works great, tested with Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.04. Very cool, I think I may start taking the bus/train more often.

Comment by joedoubl...@gmail.com, Aug 20, 2009

thanks to Capelle Alexandra's tips of changing the registry, after that i solved the problem of not able to install the drive. and for those who like Mr.Fuselier, can't download the drive file, all u need to do is to get and unzip application from the market. as the drive file is compacted in a zip file, the system can not regconise this type. after installing any unzip application try the download again shall be fine. thanks for the developer's great contribute of this fab application, and thanks for all the other people's share of good ideas.

However, after uninstalling the mass storage device, I went into the control panel and went into "add new hardware, connected my G1, clicked on "I have already connected new hardware", let the computer know where I unziped the driver, and then the new driver was installed. I then followed the rest of the directions and it actually Works! YES! I am not at ALL any kind of computer smart and I did it, so you can too!! THANKS 4 KEEPING ANDROID OPEN! Comment by jacemo...@gmail.com, Jan 13, 2010

Works great after a little tinkering.

I could not get my device to list itself at first.

I'm using a Droid. I had previously installed the android developer kit, so that might have been my issue. I could not get my device to appear with Mike's script. I could see it in the Windows device list (via control panel) but the script still didn't list the device. To resolve this, I just inspected Mike's bat files and ran the commands for myself in the ADK directory, and now everything works great.

Here's what I run from a command line:

To list my device: "adb devices" To use the proxy: "adb forward tcp:8080 tcp:8080"

Comment by bwilhe...@gmail.com, Jan 15, 2010

Once I got my HTC magic configured correctly as specified in Important 1 at the top of the instruction page (I installed proxoid, started it, and set the handset in USB Debug mode as instructed), I plugged it into my XP laptop. The installation went well from there. I had to have it plugged in so that the driver installation proceeded as advertised.

I couldn't get network working with IE 8 (surprised?), but got it working with Firefox. Way cool surfing the net on my laptop through my phone.

For all Tmobile G1 users who are unable to get pass the installation process(3.1).

If your PC is not prompting for the installation process then check the development settings of the phone. Go to the Settings>Application>Development - and check the USB debugging option.

how do I install drivers? I extract the file..now I don't know how to install driver.. help please

Comment by subd...@gmail.com, May 12, 2010

Just got it working for nexus one on WinXP. To get it to work, I installed the drivers from the SDK, not from the download pack proxoid-adb.zip on this site. However, I did use the start-tunnel.bat file from proxoid-adb.zip, so I had to download it anyway.

Then after plugging in Nexus One, go through the new hardware driver install process, and location the usb driver folder (for me it was C:\android-sdk-windows\usb_driver)

Now, extract the files from proxoid-adb.zip. Copy start-tunnel.bat to <your-sdk-location>\tools (for me it was C:\android-sdk-windows\tools)

Start up proxoid on phone (keep the port 8080) Double click start-tunnel.bat

Configure Firefox or whichever browser to use proxy localhost, port 8080.

Thank you proxoid!!!!

Has anyone had any luck with the EVO? Same problem with step 3.1...nothing happens.

Comment by cotte.l...@gmail.com, Nov 2, 2010

sorry for english-speakers, but too late to translate anything right, just use google translate and replace the é/à/è/ù/ç by the normal letters ;)

Hi, thanks got this working on Win2K with a Samsung Galaxy Portal i5700 (Spica) running Android 2.1 :) I didn't load the driver above, it just worked with the already loaded Samsung Driver.

I managed to make it work with my T-Mobile G1 too. I got stuck on 3.1 as well. Was not prompted to install driver(s). Then I realized that we'd installed PDANet previously. Seems those drivers work with proxoid - go figure! I skipped to browser setup, started tunnel and all worked "as advertised"! :-) Sign up yet another happy camper!

I have an HTC Aria and I got stuck at step 3.4 ; Instead of the HTC Dream Composite ADB Interface I got just ADB. I select the X86 from the downloaded file and I got the message the driver was not installed. I use XP 32bits. Thank you!!
