issue 55 (Yahoo messenger expiring 8/15/2009) commented on by aclottmann   -   Thanks, Anton, for the note. Sorry to see it go. Kind of hard to promote if it's not going to work with Yahoo, however. I will watch for Proteus's resurrection, and will move back when and if it lives again. I really liked this IM client, and, as I've said, I did turn a lot of people here at work onto it. Thanks for all the work you put into it. If you have the keys, you might put a note on the front door of proteusx.org about not working with Yahoo and ICQ, and maybe soliciting help from the developer community. It might not get you much, but it might ease the frustration of Proteus users wondering what's up. Thanks again, and I'll be on the lookout for updates.

issue 55 (Yahoo messenger expiring 8/15/2009) commented on by curtlewis1   -   Proteus quits on me now. "An error has occured and all services are unavailable." So even the services which still work, are no longer available. I think the two yahoo accounts generating the errors quickly together at login are causing the problem, but the app doesn't give me enough time to disable the accounts. No matter, disabling the account is not an acceptable work around for me. Since the team seems to no longer support the Proteus client (this bug has been idle for 3 months), I guess I'll have to switch to another client.

issue 55 (Yahoo messenger expiring 8/15/2009) commented on by anton.malykh   -   I'll try to answer the questions here. I'm not the owner of this project, though I used to be kinda developer (the last one) of Proteus. It is sad to say, but Proteus is abandoned for at least a couple of years. Looks like Yahoo IM and ICQ don't work anymore in Proteus and there is no one to fix the bugs. RIP Proteus :( It seems like the only alternative on Mac OS is Adium client (http://adium.im/), though I have no idea if there is an easy way to export history or contacts from Proteus to Adium. As a former developer I must add that though it is sad to watch Proteus dying, there is a way to help it. The problem is that people don't know about Proteus and in fact you can hardly find it in Google. If you can help to advertise Proteus somehow, it might attract some new developers to it, who can possibly revive it (and personally i believe that though it is abandoned, it still has some advantages over Adium and therefore it has some chances to live). Hope this helps...

issue 55 (Yahoo messenger expiring 8/15/2009) commented on by aclottmann   -   Looks like September 30 is our drop-dead date: http://www.ymessengerblog.com/blog/2009/09/18/versions-6-7-5-will-end-on-september-30/ I read here about why I might be experiencing this login loop: http://www.celticwolf.com/useful-information/faqs/26-pidgin-yahoo I'm using scs.msg.yahoo.com, and it appears that some of their servers are mapped to the new authentication method, and some aren't. Guessing by September 30th, none will be. Feel like I'm beating a dead horse here, though. Anyone have suggestions of which client I should switch to? I'd love to be able to xfer my IM history and nicknames, but doubt that will be possible. Thoughts? Or a last-minute note from the developer community that we'll get an update by 9/30? BTW - I'm not just a crank. I've been with Proteus from almost the beginning. I actually paid for Proteus before it became free, and donated money (granted, not a lot, but something) since. I've turned a lot of people onto Proteus, and it kind of kills me that I have to give it up. If I could code, I'd jump in and try to solve the issue, but that's not my skill set. Thanks...

issue 55 (Yahoo messenger expiring 8/15/2009) commented on by aclottmann   -   Interesting. Yesterday, I kept getting kicked out, but after 15-20 connect attempts, it finally let me stay connected. It's going through the same loop for me again right now. May very well be a localized issue. OK. Same thing happened again today. 15-20 connect/IM/disconnect loops, then Yahoo finally let me stay connected. Would be interesting to hear if anyone else has the same experience.

issue 55 (Yahoo messenger expiring 8/15/2009) commented on by aclottmann   -   So it looks like we're now dead. Yahoo is disconnecting me, and Proteus is continually trying to reconnect, so I'm in a loop of connect/get yahoo! admin IM saying this is no longer supported/disconnect with Yahoo. Am I really going to have to say goodbye to Proteus? This makes me sad, but there's *no* indication that *anyone* is looking at this issue at all. Some kind of message from Proteus developers saying "Time for users to move on to another client" or "Working on it, come back soon" would be *really* helpful. Thanks. FYI - The message I'm getting still reads: You are using an older version of Yahoo! Messenger that is no longer supported. Please upgrade by downloading the newest version by going to: http://messenger.yahoo.com/download.php

It no longer mentions a date and just says the client I'm using is no longer supported and points me to a yahoo client download. I expect in a couple to four weeks they'll disable connections entirely.

issue 55 (Yahoo messenger expiring 8/15/2009) commented on by aclottmann   -   Just got a dire warning IM from Yahoo Admin saying: "You are using an older version of Yahoo! Messenger that is no longer supported. Please upgrade by downloading the newest version by going to: http://messenger.yahoo.com/download.php" Not sure if this means that they will soon actively block connections or if they won't care if they eventually break this connection method. I have no sense if Proteus is still in active development and plans to fix this or if I need to switch to something else, which I really don't want to. If I could get some sense from developers that they're working to fix this, or that the warnings aren't really a big deal, or whatever, I'd appreciate it. Maybe developers could post a note on the front page of proteusx.org to let us users know what's up. (I'm running 4.2.1 on Leopard, BTW...)

issue 55 (Yahoo messenger expiring 8/15/2009) commented on by slimeyapple   -   At times, Proteus does not sign in to Yahoo Messenger without me going to the Yahoo.com page, signing out (if signed in) and back in again. (or having to sign in if not already signed in). Otherwise, Proteus does not connect to YIM. I am hoping that this update comes soon. If I had coding capability, I would try to help - but aside from CSS and HTML I can't write or fix code :)

issue 57 (Message history not saved) reported by yaroslav.buzko   -   What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. Any message exchange using ICQ or Jabber protocol (others not tested) What is the expected output? What do you see instead? It is expected that with the "enable history on this account", message history will be stored and available in History Archive. However, the archive is empty, although I messaged extensively both yesterday and today. Restarting didn't help. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? 4.2.1 on Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.7. Please provide any additional information below. I tried viewing the history.db file with an ASCII or hex editor, and I see that it is indeed empty - it only contains the table definitions, "CREATE TABLE 'icq' ( identifier TEXT, [...] " and same for jabber. File size is 4Kb, although I definitely produced more logs than that over 2 days. So apparently nothing gets saved, for whatever reason.

issue 52 ((old) ICQ emoticons/how to make your own emoticons?!) reported by m...@franziskahorn.de   -   What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. I was trying to make my own emoticons using the old ICQ smileys but since i dont know much about programming I couldnt figure out how to do it. 2. I've saved all the smileys as .png and I copyed the .plist from a set of emoticons called "patrick's face" I found on the internet and which worked when I installed it. In the .plist I changed the names to match my .pngs and i changed the text in order to later replace ":)" with my smiley and not like it was "(P.smile)" or whatever 3. I made the whole thing (all the pics and the text doc) into .emoticons and double clicked it. 4. proteus said it installed it correctly but the emoticons dont show up on the smiley list and they dont get replaced when i type ":)" What is the expected output? What do you see instead? I want the smileys to appear but they dont...... What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? Proteus 4.2 on Mac OSX 10.4.11 Please provide any additional information below. could you give a guidance on how to make your own set of emoticons (for example in the proteus forum) or put a set of icq (5.0) emoticons online? pleeeeaaasseeeeeeeeeeee!!!
