Portaboom is a standalone mini distribution of Linux that allows people to play the game of Doom on any Intel machine with a CD ROM drive, regardless of what operating system is installed on the hard drive. Plans are underway to add other FPS games like Quake, Duke Nukem 3d, and the like using a modular packaging system, which would let you choose what applications you want to download and run. Portaboom will boot from a CD-ROM or USB flash drive, and once booted, start an X server for gameplay and interaction with the system. A sub-project will be a menu system built using Gtk2-Perl to handle user interaction and selection of options prior to running a game. |
