- You know what, my assessment is wrong. After more research, it seems like this 403
error has been an issue for years. The problem seems to be with the way the checksum
is calculated on servers (and specifically, the versions of software (apache) they
were running).
I tried using the code from mh2k, and it works. So if anyone is running into the 403
problem, maybe try mh2k code. Good luck!

- Did Google stop allowing script access to the search service?? I'm getting the 403
error as well, starting Aug 5, 2009. It was working fine before.
Reading their TOS at http://www.google.com/accounts/TOS, I now see (don't know if
that was there before or not):
"5.3 You agree not to access (or attempt to access) any of the Services by any means
other than through the interface that is provided by Google, unless you have been
specifically allowed to do so in a separate agreement with Google. You specifically
agree not to access (or attempt to access) any of the Services through any automated
means (including use of scripts or web crawlers) and shall ensure that you comply
with the instructions set out in any robots.txt file present on the Services."
