Notes on Census.gov provided shapefiles

About Census Shapefiles

The Census provides reasonably up to date political boundary information at http://www.census.gov/geo/www/cob/bdy_files.html. These files are not in an open format, but there are ways to leverage the information found within. The three options for most of the datasets are ARC/INFO Export, ArcView Shapefile, and ARC/INFO Ungenerate. The ArcView shapefiles were chosen to work with as the existing ShapeLib helps to deal with them.

There are bindings for shapelib in most major languages, so it would be relatively simple to duplicate the functionality of polipoly in languages other than Python.
