Mar 23, 2012 The PHLAWD.net website has new how to information and everything you need to run the new version of phlawd.

Oct 17, 2011 Please check out this link if you have any questions. Post questions there as well please.

Oct 2, 2011 It is highly recommended that you work with the most recent source code. PHLAWD is continually updated and new features are added frequently.

Jul 23, 2010 For those interested in the source code only. The source code development has moved to github (http://github.com/blackrim/phlawd) but the releases and all other information will continue to be hosted here.

PHLAWD (pronounced flawd) allows for the creation of large (mega) phylogenies using NCBI databases. There are binaries available for Linux and MacOSX in the downloads section. PHLAWD takes advantage (or at least part of it) of multi threaded computers and can produce matrices of more than 100,000 taxa. For details on the methodology please consult these publications:

  • Smith, S. A., J. Beaulieu, and M. J. Donoghue. 2009. Mega-phylogeny approach for comparative biology: an alternative to supertree and supermatrix approaches. BMC Evol Biol. link use for citation of method
  • Smith, S. A. and M. J. Donoghue. 2008. Rates of Molecular Evolution are Linked to Life History in Flowering Plants. Science.

See this page for publications using this approach.

The package will also include a web-interface in the near future.
