Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use my Apple Remote with PandoraBoy?

Using your Apple Remote is actually quite simple. First you need to make sure that the remote is enabled. You can do this by going to the Preferences menus and making sure that Enable Apple Remote is checked. As long as the remote is enabled, you can use it to control Pandora in the following ways:

  • Press the center Play/Pause button to Play or Pause the music.
  • Press the left arrow to tell pandora that you like the song that is currently playing.
  • Press the right arrow to skip to the next song.
  • Press and hold the right arrow to tell pandora you don't like the currently playing song and skip to the next one.
  • You can use the plus and minus buttons to increase and decrease the overall computer volume.

How can I easily change the song I'm listening to in PandoraBoy?

Controlling PandoraBoy is quite easy. You can define control PandoraBoy by either using your Apple Remote or defining Global Hotkeys. Hotkeys can be defined by going to the Preference Menu and then clicking on the Hotkey Icon.

Why can't I use my global hotkeys or my Apple Remote while PandoraBoy is minimized?

Webkit (the toolkit used to display Pandora.com in an application) seems to treat flash applets differently when they are minimized. As a result, Pandora does not change songs correctly while PandoraBoy is minimized. If you happen to be a programmer who knows how to fix this, please let me know :).

How can I be sure that I always have the latest version of PandoraBoy?

By default, PandoraBoy checks if there is a newer version available every time it starts up. If you don't want this behavior for some reason, you can disable it in the Preference Panel.

I can not get the app to open it loads to install and that is it. help.

Comment by d3desi...@gmail.com, Feb 4, 2008

Thanks for the great app! Here is a Leopard compatible replacement icon I created for it: http://labs.dview.us/files/d9d4b06f05900b07c7c75e4c125f93b0-5.html

Enjoy!

Awesome app! Is there a way to prevent the Apple remote from also controlling iTunes when using it for PandoraBoy?? Or must I quit iTunes before using the remote?

Thanks!

Comment by andyatki...@gmail.com, Apr 6, 2008

Is there already a way to change Pandora stations with the Apple remote? I don't see it in the FAQ. thanks.

Comment by mrubenz...@gmail.com, May 9, 2008

Advice please: You have two downloads but no guidance as to which one is recommended. PandoraBoy?-0.3.1.dmg PandoraBoy?-0.5.1a.dmg ? I assume I should download the latest but not sure why the older one is there.

Comment by phos...@gmail.com, May 9, 2008

I downloaded the latest version and found that I was unable to save my preferences - is there something I need to do? If I quit Pandoraboy and open it again, the preferences are empty. I am assuming this may also be the reason that my remote is not working, but that could be something else entirely.

Comment by sci...@gmail.com, May 12, 2008

Comment by RAMcL...@gmail.com, Jun 9, 2008

Hello,

I'm stuck in the UK and haven't been able to use Pandora since they shut the service down for non-US users in January. I don't suppose there's a way of configuring this to use a proxy server, or Tor, is there please?

Thanks!

Comment by kbwheel@gmail.com, Jun 20, 2008

This is awesome! It works perfectly on my system, and the ability to control pandora with the Apple Remote is worth the price of admission right there. Thanks a lot!

Comment by paultan...@gmail.com, Jun 21, 2008

I installed pandora boy and it is working, but the remote doesn't work. I'm not sure what what I'm doing wrong. I have leopard 10.5.2, and my remote works fine for front row but not this. Any ideas?

Comment by wsto...@gmail.com, Jul 18, 2008

I can't seem to get the play/pause and thumbs up/down shortcuts to work when I set them to Cmd+Opt+/ page up / page down?. I am able to get the next, vol up/down shortcuts to work. Can't get the mute shortcut to work either. :-( I would be great if Cmd+W would "close" the app by hiding it since I guess you have to have the window "open" right?

Comment by wsto...@gmail.com, Jul 18, 2008

Forgot to mention I'm using Leopard on a G5 if that matters.

Comment by papk...@gmail.com, Jul 28, 2008

cannot get hotkeys to work at all. any suggestions?

Comment by frat...@gmail.com, Aug 22, 2008

i can't get hotkeys to work at all either

Comment by frat...@gmail.com, Aug 22, 2008

okay, never mind. seems even though i had quit Synergy PandoraBoy? still registered the hotkeys as taken. after relaunching PandoraBoy? they worked.

Comment by ryanworr...@gmail.com, Aug 27, 2008

cant get growl notifications to show up for some reason.

Comment by drew.hy...@gmail.com, Sep 9, 2008

Is there a Windows version?

Comment by man...@gmail.com, Sep 10, 2008

Is there any way to allow control of PandoraBoy? over a local network/ For example, if I have PandoraBoy? running on one computer, but I'm at another computer and want to vote up/down a song or switch stations, can I do so from the remote computer location?

Comment by itsonlyg...@gmail.com, Sep 22, 2008

It would be nice to have controls for pandoraboy when you right click the icon similar to how their app has. I hide the window alot and sometimes its easier to right click and pause rather than find the window and hit stop, or to hit a shortcut key.

Comment by bbechte...@gmail.com, Sep 22, 2008

I can't turn off the Apple Remote support. Whether checked or unchecked, it still functions. I would prefer to leave it on, however the volume controled is Pandora's volume, not the system volume as documented. I have a 2.4 GHz iMac running 10.5.5 and the latest Pandoraboy build. Don't mean to just come and complain though, this combined with an AppleScript? has accomplished my goal of displaying current track info in Adium!

Comment by jcoreym...@gmail.com, Oct 2, 2008

Pretty cool, I have the Apple Remote working with Pandoraboy but there is something I don't understand about the global hotkeys. If I set one to Application=Pandoraboy then it is not global but instead works only when the focus is on Pandoraboy (I did close and relaunch Pandora). Any pointers would be great.

Comment by thatthey...@gmail.com, Oct 11, 2008

I get a missing plugin icon (blue lego w/ question mark when I open the app. Am I missing something?

Comment by tonymin...@gmail.com, Nov 12, 2008

awesome app. seems that growl notifications don't appear when the app is in the background or minimized.

Comment by fosh...@gmail.com, Nov 16, 2008

love for people outside US...

Comment by ibo...@gmail.com, Dec 9, 2008

It seems that Pandora has changed its webpage format. PandoraBoy?, instead of showing the stripped-down window it used to show now shows the entire webpage in a small window with scrollbars. Granted, all commands currently work, but it looks like the new format of the webpage isn't reflected in the app's code.

Comment by thrashn...@gmail.com, Dec 11, 2008

^ Yes. Also, if you click the button to go to the standalone music player (which is what should be displaying in the PandoraBoy? window), all of your stations are duplicated in the "Stations" menu.

Comment by shikhan...@gmail.com, Dec 13, 2008

everything's perfect... thanks for the great app!

oh btw, skinning support? ;)

Comment by bretten....@gmail.com, Dec 15, 2008

I agree with 'ibonny's comment above. It seems the full Pandora page is displaying within PandoraBoy? instead of the "Miniaturized player" version. This causes an unpleasant display of half-visible scroll-bars and only 90% of the player being displayed within PandoraBoy? at any given time.

Also, I use an Apple Wired Keyboard connected to my Macbook Pro and I'm unable to use the "F7-F9" (Last song, play/pause, next song) shortcut keys on my keyboard; I'm also unable to assign them as shortcuts within PandoraBoy?, thus forcing me to either switch songs/pause manually or assign another combination of keys (which neither are preferable).

Comment by leci...@gmail.com, Dec 25, 2008

Same problem as bretten.mickle here. Any way to re-size the applications window?

Comment by ibo...@gmail.com, Dec 26, 2008

Thanks guys! The new version works perfectly! I guess Pandora changed their API which broke the old version? Thanks again for a great app!

Comment by daniel.z...@gmail.com, Feb 5, 2009

Is there anyway to use the play and skip keys of the newer Apple Keyboards to control PandoraBoy?? I can't seem to assign them in the shortcuts.

Also I think a little Panda Boy would be a cool icon for this App instead of the generic notes. Tell me if you need help with this as I'm a graphic designer.

Comment by brum...@gmail.com, Feb 16, 2009

If you're running pandora boy and minimize the window into the dock, is there any way to make it so you can click the app icon and call the window back up again? (that is, rather than clicking the actual icon of the minimized window) Clearly, this isn't a big deal but I was hoping there might be a quick fix.

Comment by kxa...@gmail.com, Mar 12, 2009

@brumacd when switching to PandoraBoy? app keep holding "Option" key when releasing "Tab" and "Apple". It will bring app window back from minimized. It works for any app in osx.

Comment by jimperr...@gmail.com, Apr 16, 2009

I can't create a new station. When I click the button I get the new station interface, and when I click into the text entry box the placeholder text disappears, but it won't accept keyboard input. All I get are beeps when I try to type in. On 10.5.6 on an intel imac.

Comment by timboch...@gmail.com, Apr 21, 2009

Is there a way to change the audio output device for the application? Possibly via Applescript? I would like to be able to set the sound output for just Pandora Boy to a Bluetooth A2D device without redirecting all of my system audio to the Bluetooth. Is this possible?

Comment by l.Flyn...@gmail.com, May 1, 2009

timbochman: Jack might be able to do what you're looking for. It's not very intuitive, though. http://www.jackosx.com/

Comment by GayRIJ...@gmail.com, Sep 14, 2009

Anyone having trouble after 10.5.8 update? The app only has a "Lego" image instead of controls/interface.

Comment by gabik...@gmail.com, Oct 2, 2009

I just got 0.8.0, had to quit and relaunch to get the keys to work. Now when I growl the song i says 'by: (null) on:(null)' -- seems wrong...

Comment by ninja3po...@gmail.com, Dec 26, 2009

My PandoraBoy? has been loading off window recently. Whatsup? http://bayimg.com/gAJelaaCd Any ideas?

Comment by Christin...@gmail.com, Jan 5, 2010

Same problem as @ninja3point14 and @gobackpacking! Annoying! Fix please?

Comment by dustintu...@gmail.com, Jan 8, 2010

Yes, me too! I am only get half the controls and can't click the thumbs up/down button...

Comment by L.H.Brum...@gmail.com, Jan 11, 2010

Same problem as half the recent commenters. Only shows the top of the pandora window, which means I can't thumb up or down any songs, and can't acess the stations at the bottom of my list. Patch please?

Comment by williams...@gmail.com, Jan 11, 2010

glad it's not just me. Had to reinstall the app recently and now I can't even log in to my pandora account

Comment by tfd...@gmail.com, Jan 12, 2010

Just adding my voice to those whose client is loading the controls off-window.

Comment by dross...@gmail.com, Jan 12, 2010

FIX THE WINDOW - its not that complicated.

Comment by jfree...@freeassoc.com, Jan 14, 2010

Just installed PandoraBoy? on MacBook? Pro running Snow Leopard. My remote controls only iTunes. Can't figure out how to make it control PandoraBoy?. Suggestions, anyone?

Comment by snowcha...@gmail.com, Jan 19, 2010

I also just installed PandoraBoy? on a MacBook? running snow leopard but I can not make it control PandoraBoy?. I did enable the remote in the preferences but that did nothing for me.

Comment by wpelg...@gmail.com, Jan 27, 2010

I like the application, but please fix that window!!

Comment by 83Tho...@gmail.com, Feb 3, 2010

WOW. This is awesome. The growl notification is the only thing I was looking for, and PandoraBoy? does it.

Only 1 problem, the blank white space on the top of the window, other than that, it's perfect.

Thanks for taking the time to make this.

Comment by TimaColl...@gmail.com, Feb 22, 2010

Remote note working, enabled in preferences, running intel imac on snow leopard?? Fix please, i'd love to use the remote

Comment by tks.ohi...@gmail.com, Mar 1, 2010

Are you working on Last.fm support?

Comment by justkris...@gmail.com, Mar 2, 2010

Cannot get anything to show up in the Pandora Boy window other than white space. Re-installed latest version, same thing. I am on a PowerMac? with 2x2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Zeon processors, 8GB of RAM and am running 10.5.8. Anyone else having this problem?

Comment by tonysla...@gmail.com, Mar 4, 2010

Not working for me either. Can't log into my account any more. Half the buttons don't work.

Comment by alfredo....@gmail.com, Apr 9, 2010

Hey guys I have been looking a way to contact you so I could suggest to implemente the twitter and facebook sharing just as the website and also if there could be a now playing menu bar option i know I could leave the growl forever but it would look much better on the menubar Thanks! Great app

Comment by christop...@gmail.com, May 20, 2010

Hi, awesome app. I am using it to wake me up in the morning via iCal alarms, works great!

Here is the applescript I am using to make it happen: http://tumblr.christophercamps.com/post/595538127/turn-your-mac-into-a-pandora-alarm-clock

Thanks!

Comment by becca.yo...@gmail.com, Sep 13, 2010

Hi. I love this app, thank you so much for making it. Lately I am having an issue with the client on my Mac running OS 10.5.8. Here is a screenshot: Basically there's this white space at the top and then also there are dialogue boxes where I can't "reach" the buttons at the bottom. I can't enlarge the window or scroll down, so it just stays "stuck" there. Thank you for your work!

Comment by grubaugh...@gmail.com, Oct 15, 2010

The Window is to small, no adjustment and I cannot login to my created long ago Pandora Account, with all my music and Stations already set! White Space no controls etc...etc..... Great idea but your execution SUCKS!!!!!! It is Obvious after reading the comments you know it SUCKS and evidently are doing nothing to correct the problem! I do not like it when idiots waste my time!!! By the way "THIS SUCKS!!!!!!"

Comment by rogerow...@gmail.com, Oct 19, 2010

Just wanted you guys to know that if you log in to www.pandora.com, you'll see the same message—only here in your web browser, you can dismiss this message, change things in your profile, et. When you restart PandoraBoy?, the message will be gone. Yes the size of the box and what's displayed looks funny (not right), but you can see everything you need to see and play music again with control.

Comment by propheti...@gmail.com, Dec 15, 2010

does this support pandora one with higher quality audio?

Comment by dylanlav...@gmail.com, Jan 4, 2011

I love the idea, it has much more features than my fluid pandora app, but the apple remote doesn't work at all. I have the setting enabled, iTunes closed, and the remote isn't opening frontrow like it usually does so i know the app is effecting it. Im running on a 23in iMac updated with the latest Snow Leopard update at the time of this post, with a new silver and black apple remote

Comment by ScottJGoldman, Jul 18, 2011

Hello Folks - First of all, thank you VERY much for a terrific application. Using PandoraOne? isn't an option for me as I detest AdobeAir?-dependent apps (memory hogs - blech) and I wanted a way to use Pandora without a browser window. Great stuff and works beautifully.

My question is in regards to the Applescript "playpause" command. Is there any way to separate the two commands so that it's not a toggle but rather can tell what state the app is in? I have a script set up that does a number of things when I leave my desk and being able to check PandoraBoy? to see if it's in "play" mode and then, if so, change that to "pause" would be extremely helpful.

Comment by ayudacel...@gmail.com, Jul 26, 2011

This project is dead

I switched to pianobar a while back since the dev doesn't respond to issues or email.

Comment by lupeque...@gmail.com, Sep 27, 2011
