Introduction

BetamaxSMS is a Maemo Application for Internet Tablets such as the N800, N810 from Nokia. It allows sending of SMS through the Betamax VoIP service hidden behind many brands:

Details

Installation: You need python for this, the quickest way to get python with all the necessary stuff is to install gPodder from the extras.

1. move betamax.py to: /usr/local/bin/betamax.py 2. chmod +x /usr/local/bin/betamax.py 3. move betamax.desktop to /usr/share/applications/hildon/betamax.desktop 4. You should now have BetamaxSMS in your Extras menu, enjoy!

Known Bugs

At the time of writing (21.01.2009), the Betamax service on voipcheap.com not always (read: never) returns a positive response after sending the SMS, meaning your sending status will in most cases "fail", however the SMS always arrives at the recipient. Since I can't influence this behavior we have to live with it, I am not going to remove the send-status in the hope that one day Betamax is going to fix their service. :-D
