Introduction

BetamaxSMS is a Dashboard Widget for Mac OS X. It allows sending of SMS through the Betamax VoIP service hidden behind many brands:

12voip.com, budgetsip.com, calleasy.com, dialnow.com, freecall.com, internetcalls.com, intervoip.com, justvoip.com, llowratevoip.com, netappel.fr, nonoh.net, poivy.com, sipdiscount.com, ssmsdiscount.com, smslisto.com, sparvoip.de, voipbuster.com, vvoipbusterpro.com, vvoipcheap.co.uk, voipcheap.com, voipdiscount.com, voiphit.com, voipraider.com, voipstunt.com, voipwise.com, voipzoom.com, wwebcalldirect.com, and probably many many more...

The widget's interface and the addressbook functions are based on emitSMS code.

Details

After installing BetamaxSMS, click on the i to setup some values, these would be:

URL: The exact service URL is hidden on this page: http://<_www.someservice.com_>/en/sms_instructions.html under the headline "Using HTML SMSlink". In most cases the URL you are looking for is https://myaccount.<someservice.com>/clx/sendsms.php For Voipcheap this would be: https://myaccount.voipcheap.com/clx/sendsms.php

User: Your Username for the Betamax service

Pass: Your Password

Number: Your mobilephone's number so the user can reply to your SMS. !!! You have to setup this number first in the Windows client, otherwise it will not work.

Address Book search: In most cases you want this, it will use the OS X addressbook to find the number, just type a name.

Usage

Type your sms, enter the recipient, press the envelope icon to send.

• blue phone = sending
• green phone = successfully sent
• red phone = failed sending, in most cases sent anyway (see known bugs below)

Known Bugs

At the time of writing (21.01.2009), the Betamax service on voipcheap.com not always (read: never) returns a positive response after sending the SMS, meaning your sending status will be in most cases red (=failed), however the SMS always arrives at the recipient. Since I can't influence this behavior we have to live with it, I am not going to remove the send-status in the hope that one day Betamax is going to fix their service. :-D
