issue 12 (external link format not parsed) Status changed by nicolas.raoul   -   I think we should render external links as actually clickable links, but render them a bit differently so that people understand it is remote (which may mean unreachable or expensive). This is not difficult to implement, but we just need to decide how to show it. A different color may not be visible by some visually impaired people. An arrow image like Wikipedia does is graphically good, but for performance reasons I would rather use characters than images. Example: NYATT [>] arranges private transport services In this example, the > character should be replaced with another character that looks like an outgoing arrow, as seen on the NYC article or any other article. Or something with the same semantic. Do you know such a character?

issue 11 (#redirect pages are not redirected) Labels changed by nicolas.raoul   -   Hmm, this will not be easy to fix. So far we don't scrape the redirect pages, because there are so many of them. I think that right now, links to redirect pages are not rendered as link at all, am I wrong? Obviously, we should render them as direct links t the final target.

issue 12 (external link format not parsed) reported by luis.villa   -   External links show up as [foo http://foo.com] in the main text. It would be nice if they just showed up as foo (no link) since, again, we are presumably offline when reading it, so the external link doesn't help much. Alternately it could be converted into a link, perhaps with an external link icon to indicate that it might not work? It would be sweet if external links to wikipedia were followed, though- I have often wanted the first page of a wikipedia trail to give me more background on history, etc.

issue 11 (#redirect pages are not redirected) reported by luis.villa   -   This is a very minor issue, but would probably also be easy to fix in the generator. Pages that are a #redirect currently show the #redirect and the page it will be redirected to. It would be nice to just skip that all together and eliminate the middleman, or otherwise use a redirect header like the real pages do.

I live in New York, so lots of subway time too, but I tend to use old-fashioned books in it ;) When I said '404 page' I guess I meant not a true 404 page, but the page shown when no page has been created yet. I think you mentioned it in one of the other bugs that currently it is just blank?

issue 8 (Maps) commented on by nicolas.raoul   -   We don't have coordinates but could try to generate them thanks to a geocoding service such as: http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/services.html#Geocoding It could be a nice addition if Wikitravel decided to have coordinate like Wikipedia articles. By the way, another way to get coordinates could be to follow the link to the Wikipedia article and read coordinates from the corresponding DBpedia entry. Thanks for the "maps:" hint, that will be useful! Offline maps could be Google Maps with the cache, requiring the user to recognize the area a bit in advance using a Wireless connection.

issue 4 (Make it usable on Android) Status changed by nicolas.raoul   -   Thank you so much for this trick Luis, that's exactly what OxygenGuide needed! I integrated your wiki comment in the instructions (please feel free to update the wiki directly if you want). The generator takes the wikicode and turns it into a lightweight HTML. The resulting HTML is much much lighter than the corresponding Wikitravel HTML page. But it is still HTML, and need a browser to be displayed. Thanks again for your feedback and research Luis, that's a great step for OxygenGuide on Android :-)

issue 10 (download by country or continent?) commented on by nicolas.raoul   -   I, for one, sometimes browse wiki articles randomly, even when I am not on the same continent. I sometimes follow my relatives' trips all over the world and learn more about the places they are talking about. But I agree with you that most people won't need that much. Any browser would probably reuse Android's WebView component, and I am not sure we can modify its 404 page.

issue 8 (Maps) commented on by luis.villa   -   Does wikitravel have the metadata necessary to automatically generate maps? (i.e., latitude/longitude coordinates?) For android, I believe that there is a way to create html links that call into the map application, so that if you had coordinates you could do something like <a href="maps://X,Y">open in map</a>. But I can't find any documentation for that, though I know I've seen it done. That seems like a cheap/easy way to integrate android maps. Of course, I guess now that I think about it what you're saying is use offline maps + GPS (which does not require a data plan)? Because obviously the use case for this is for people who don't want to play for data ;)

issue 10 (download by country or continent?) commented on by luis.villa   -   I guess I'd say that people who want to look at information for one continent when they are in other continents are in the minority ;) Obviously it is awkward, and you want to develop a better '404' page regardless, but that seems like something that in practice most people won't do.

I found a webpage that suggests that in Cupcake (Android 1.5, which all Android phones should now have) content://com.android.htmlfileprovider/sdcard/example/file.html will display example/file.html. I am copying over oxygenguide to my android now and will report back in an hour or so ;)

issue 10 (download by country or continent?) changed by nicolas.raoul   -   That's not difficult to do :-) But what is the best way to handle inter-continental links? A link from India to England will be broken if only Asia is downloaded, is it better than no link at all? The problem is that HTML files can not modify themselves to show links only if the target exists (and doing this programmatically would take a lot of processor time).

Unfortunately, wgte is not ported to Android yet, so it won't help for this particular issue. It will have the same need though: We both need a browser that can browse HTML from the SD card. I can't believe nobody has implemented this yet... some big project must have done that for their Help manual. We have to find it :-)
