This project creates a comfortable map viewing and navigation (routing) application for mobile devices (such as Android phones). the challenges include device limitations of memory & processor resources. The application is particularly aimed at economic internet usage or no internet use at all (use preloaded data offline), hence offline features are prioritized higher than online features. To get started you can visit Welcome. Screenshots & descriptions are also available at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OsmAnd, and you can visit the project homepage. For questions to give feedback, you are welcome to discuss the project at the google group OsmAnd. Please do not use comments on wiki page because it is rather difficult to find them. The application currently accomodates the following use cases : - Map viewing and looking for locations or landmarks like villages, lakes, addresses (street / house number), the nearest open restaurants, or the closest public transport.
- Aid for city walking tours (with or without internet) as a tourist, find POIs and addresses.
- View or go to a location specified by lat/lon coordinates
- Log your movements in tracks
- Save your favorite spots as 'Favorites'.
- OSM contributors can see OSM bugs : open/create, update map, edit POI.
- Navigate using an existing GPX file
- Use online routing for navigation (requires a small amount of internet traffic per route).
- Offline routing is still in an experimental stage and works only for short distances
How to install & use application : You can find the donation version Osmand+ on the Android Market (net.osmand.plus) or you can get one of the nightly builds and install it using ApkInstaller . Look at the How To Answers pages for hints on how to use the application and its features.
Target devices are Android 1.5 - 2.3
Support of the project The project is a fully open and any help is appreciated. There are several ways to support product development :
- You can send detailed reports on usability & how it could be improved by minimal changes
- You can help with localization by providing translations to different languages, see TranslateHelp.
- You can prepare/update map data for some regions & upload it to the downloads area.
- You can donate to the project.
