Do I need to have an android phone to get involved in this project?

It is not necessary, but it would help you a lot. In principle, you can do all coding also in the Android emulator. In this case, make sure that your project does not require special hardware features (like camera or sensors) that are difficult or impossible to test on an emulator.

Application

Is there any room for my own ideas or do I have to work for one of the predefined ideas?

You are certainly welcome to come up with your own ideas. Keep in mind that OpenIntents is more likely to sponsor ideas which are somehow related to applications working together, often by using Intents.
