How to properly claim a translation

Please write a reply using the following template:

What's next

Write a comment or reply directly on the GCI task page according to the template above.
Claim the task and wait until your 10 sample strings have been checked.
Once you are assigned the task, start your translation directly at Launchpad. (Note: If you bulk upload translations, they end up in the import queue. Translations will only be counted if they have been successfully imported. So it may be quicker to manually enter translations through the web interface, in which case translations show up immediately)
When you are done, mark your task as done and wait until we close your task.

You may have to upload a file or a link first in order to mark your task as "done". Upload a link to the translated application.
Don't mark your task as "done" when your translations are still in the import queue! Wait until your translations have been imported successfully, and only then mark your task as "done".

FAQ

Can I translate 100/200/400 strings of any application?

Yes. Make sure that you provide clickable links to the translations at your profile page.

What shall I do if there are less than 100 strings left for my language?

Then you have to wait until more strings are available. (Note that in the final week of GCI starting on Jan 9, 2012, translation tasks can be used on all remaining untranslated strings, even if there are less than 100 strings available.)

Is the language XYZ still available?

Which application is available for translation?

How can I check how many items are still untranslated?

Select your language, and then in the column "untranslated" click on one of the numbers (Note: the number stated here is not always accurate!). The list that appears shows the items that still need to be translated (this list is accurate!). Copy the page link, and paste it into your reply (make sure the link is clickable - see above).

Should I translate application names?

Yes, we encourage you to localize and translate the application names. The applications are intended for people who don't necessarily speak English. For example, OI File Manager is also known as: OI Bestandsbeheer, OI Dateimanager, OI Dosya Yöneticisi, OI File Manager, OI Gestore File, OI ແຟ້ມ ບໍລີຫານ, OI 파일 관리자, OI文件管理器, 檔案總管

Application names should be consistent across all applications. For example application names appearing in "descriptions" should match the application names within the applications.

Can I translate into EN_GB?

This translation requires knowing the subtle differences between US and British English. Unless you are a native English speaker and live in Britain, we will not assign this task to you.

How can I generate strings.xml to test the strings in the application?

To import translations, follow the instructions here: http://code.google.com/p/openintents/source/browse/trunk/translations/readme.txt Unfortunatley, this is not straightforward, so if you have questions, don't hesitate to ask in the developer forum.

During GCI, strings are synchronized at least once a week, so you can also download the latest strings from the trunk of the code repository.
