Grip - possible to wake up device on new events?

Posted on Jul 24, 2009 by Massive Camel

I always hated the fact, that new-SMS-Popups wake the device, while you can't do that for new mails.

Maybe this feature is for the business users apple is trying to persuade to the iPhone? I heard they always send sms and never emails. ;)

So I asked myself if waking the device (when it's locked while a new message is received) is possible. Best solution would be, to allow this in the per-app settings.

So everyone can decide if sms, emails, push notifications, all or nothing should wake the device to show a growl preview.

@1:

Waking the device like pressing the home button (while it's in screen-off state)?

yes, waking like pressing the home/power-button. But automatically based on the notification type.

Same thing happens with the default notification system (popups) when you receive an sms or an push notification.

So you can see the preview on the lockscreen.

Very useful if you have your phone on the table in the office in silent mode at work. So you can see a new message without the need of a notification sound.

I'm thinking of this solution, which doesn't need to add another option.

In Per-Priority Settings -> High priority -> Suspension behavior -> Screen off -> Choose "Deliver immediately" (which will be the default if it's OK).

In the past, this will show the GriP message immediately but the screen is still off. The new behavior will be show the GriP message and wake up the device (turn on the screen).

Users who want "wake up event" can set the message priority to "High priority" in Per-App Settings.
