UsingNameBench
These docs cover use of the UI, for command-line specific help, see UsingNameBenchCommandLine Using namebenchWhen you start namebench on Mac OS X, Windows, or Linux with the required libraries (python-tk), you will be greeted with a basic interface:
The defaults should do the right thing for nearly everyone, so most people can safely click "Start Benchmark". Once the benchmark runs, a web browser should pop-up with a detailed analysis. OptionsNameserversThis is a list of any specific nameservers that you would like to make sure are included in the benchmark. By default, this includes all of the nameservers that your system is currently using. You can specify multiple nameservers by using a comma or space in between them. Include global DNS providersSelecting this will include well-known DNS providers with global coverage into your benchmark. At the time of this writing, this includes OpenDNS and UltraDNS. Power-users can alter this list by editing namebench.cfg. Include best available regional DNS servicesSelecting this will include the fastest regional DNS servers in your test. This works by quickly testing the health of over 1,000 DNS servers around the world, and selecting only the fastest servers that provide correct responses. NOTE: The namebench UI restricts you to testing a total of 10 nameservers at a time. If your system has a primary and secondary DNS server, and 4 global DNS servers to test, only the best 4 regional DNS servers will be used in the benchmark. Include Censorship Checksnamebench includes a list of hostnames for popularly censored website. With this option enabled, it will request these hosts and check to make sure the results are as expected. Upload and Sharenamebench can now upload and published anonymized version of your results to the namebench reports site. This feature is not only useful if you would like to show someone else your results, but it helps ISP's who run DNS servers collect information on their own performance. Feedback collected is also used to improve namebench. To see a technical description of what data is uploaded, see JSON.txt. Your locationAt the moment, this field is unused. Query Data Sourcenamebench works by requesting website addresses from each DNS server. This dialog allows you to select where this list of host names are generated from. The most accurate data source is your browser history, though for smaller histories, the benchmark may bias toward your currently configured primary DNS server. This list contains each browser that namebench was able to find a history for, along with how many records it found in the history file (in parenthesis). This list also contains "Alexa Top Global Domains (10000)". This data source contains a list of the domains for the top 10,000 most popular websites on the Internet. While this data set is useful, it does not necessarily reflect your DNS use. For example, this list contains many domains in China that someone who lives in Finland is unlikely to query for. Health Check PerformanceThis option tells namebench how many DNS servers it can access at the same time for health checking. Normally, you want the fast option (40 servers). If you have problems with your internet connection however, you may want to select the slow option (10 servers). Number of queriesThis option selects how many requests should be tested for each DNS server. The more tests, the more the results should reflect real-world usage. By default we send 250 requests for each name server. OutputOnce the run completes successfully, your default web browser should pop-up with a report. It should be self-explanatory:

do i have to do something else or now my dns is faster just by click start?
You have to change your dns server configuration to match the one in the tool.
How do you change your dns server configuration to match the one in the tool?
never mind...i found it. thanks
for you and everyone else who has the same question, here's a very full guide to change your DNS settings in your PC or in your home's net (in router):

how i change my DNS server configuration?
this program helps, i used to get 4 bars most of the time but when i switched to google's public DNS, it jumped to 5 bars. Awesome.
Ed
I also went to speedtest.net and on average my download speed is only around 13mbps, now it's up at 17mbps. This proves that it works. Thank You.
Ed
Just tried Namebench for the first time.
A couple of seconds after I press 'Start' I get an error window with FAIL: No section: 'sanity' and then a number of local file addresses (from namebench.app and a reference to python.framework)
Any tips? dagge
I ran the benchmark and obtained the following results:
Recommended configuration (fastest + nearest) Primary Server 194.74.65.69 BT 41 GB Secondary Server 158.43.192.1 UU EU-3 GB Tertiary Server 62.3.32.16 Alharbitelecom GB
But when I tried to type in 194.74.65.69 as Preferred DNS server, I got an error: The network address entered is invalid. Same with 62.3.32.16

You have to change the DNS settngs in IPv4 not IPv6. Leave IPv6 alone, most sites don't use it anyway.
"Your router or ISP appears to be intercepting and redirecting all outgoing DNS request" i got this error...
I use Namebench. It's very useful, I didn't get any errors, works fine. I am very pleased and recommend it to everyone!
The Query Data Source menu, which always in the past has given me the option to use Firefox history, suddenly ceased to give me that option. How do I reconfigure Namebench to restore the option of using Firefox history? {Mac OSX Snow Leopard.)
IS NAMEBENCH AUTO CHANGE MY DNS?
downloaded name bench. when i click on the app, it flickers and nothing loads. ???? iMac core duo, OS X 10.4.11
This is a great little tool - very helpful. Thanks to the developers.
I've been pointed to some BT DNS servers which are faster than OpenDNS. Does anyone know if I am legitimately allowed to use these. I'm not a BT customer. Thanks
Ok, I thought this was working great. But unfortunately it only worked for about 2 searches then I get errors again. It's also telling me that my Airport number is the same as the one that NameBench? told me to use. So what now? I'm using a Mac OS10.6.8. Safari 5.1.2. My Airport is up to date. I keep getting the "Can't find the Server" messages. NameBench? gave me Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Server numbers. Where EXACTLY to those numbers go. I tried putting the secodary and tertiary numbers in DNS but they don't stay. I put the Primary number in the TCP/IP section after I change the Configure IPv4 to Using DHCP with manual address. But that's where it says my Airport is already using that number. So what do I do now? I can only get this thing to work once then I have to go back and select Diagnostics again. That's not gonna work AT ALL. Any help?
There is no explanation of the meanings of the symbols in the chart nor the colors nor the acceptable numbers nor what possible causes of these things. In short there is no legend! I have no idea what "NX" means nor What "TO" means nor why a value might be labeled in red?
Also, I am not sure if this is a fair test since the router has a DNS (Domain Name Server) entry in it. This might mean that my ISP ( Internet Service Provider ) is co-opting my searches, however sent, with the reported deep packet inspection. Could Google come up with an encrypted DNS so that Google advertising money is not stolen by my ISP?
Also, i have read a rumor that hijacking might be that akamai MIGHT be now running servers for paypal and others. If so could google update its lists with authoritative servers say daily weekly or monthly to prevent potentially miscuing legitimate changes as hijacking or stating that google does this and put this rumor to rest?
how i change dns?
